Honda latest to sign as LA Olympics sponsor deals gain pace

STORY: The race to sign sponsorship deals for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is heating up. On Monday, Japanese auto giant Honda was the latest to say it had signed on the dotted line. It will be the official automotive partner for the Games and Team USA, providing a fleet of vehicles for athletes. Honda will also partner with the U.S. team at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. LA28 President Casey Wasserman hailed the deal at a news conference: 'Honda's LA roots make this partnership even more meaningful, as we work to deliver a Games that will make Angelenos proud.' With the deal, the LA Games has now passed $1.5 billion in total sponsorship agreements. That follows a flurry of deal making in the first half of this year. Officials at LA28 - the private, non-profit company organizing the Games - told Reuters they were confident of hitting a target of $2.5 billion. That would more than double the deals done for the Paris Olympics last year. But it wouldn't beat the $3 billion record set by Tokyo 2020. LA28 has announced a half dozen deals so far this year. That includes making Archer Aviation its official air-taxi provider and naming analytics firm Snowflake as its data partner. LA28 has a roughly $7 billion budget for the event. Besides domestic sponsorship deals like the one with Honda, it also gets money from the International Olympic Committee and its sponsors. Other revenue sources include ticket and merchandise sales. The 1984 LA Olympics turned a profit and became a model for future Games. However, many subsequent host cities - including Sydney, Athens and Rio de Janeiro - blew way past their budgets.

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season is underway

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — June 1 was a busy day for the weather community. It was the first day of meteorological summer, as well as the first day of the Atlantic hurricane season. The hurricane season officially lasts from June 1 until Nov. 30, although it is not uncommon for there to be periods of inactivity throughout the season. Mid-August to late September is generally when the Atlantic is most active with hurricanes, climatologically peaking on Sept. 10, which is the period when the conditions to form hurricanes are most favorable. In Western New York, why is this information relevant? Hurricanes are known to bring catastrophic damage to coastal states like Florida, but once they make landfall, if they have enough energy, their remnants — which can include heavy rainfall, tornado outbreaks, and strong winds — can affect inland states. 2024 was a strong example of this phenomenon. July 2024 brought a tornado outbreak to Western New York. Four tornadoes touched down in Chautauqua and Erie counties, the strongest being recorded at an EF-1 strength with maximum winds of 110 miles per hour. This outbreak was due to remnants of Hurricane Beryl, which tracked from Texas to New York and produced 68 confirmed tornadoes along its path. Another example of hurricane effects inland is Hurricane Helene, whose remnants brought devastating impacts to Western North Carolina. One hundred sixteen fatalities and $53 billion in damages due to catastrophic flooding made this the deadliest tropical system in the state's recorded history. Although the 2025 season has just started, it has been pretty quiet so far. Only one tropical disturbance has been noted and it was not named. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has forecasted 2025 to be a very active season, with three to five major hurricanes included in that forecast. Southern Tier resident seeks answers in Chautauqua County cold case

CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVB) — Questions are being raised about the possibility of an accused murderer being responsible a cold case from 1978 that took place in Chautauqua County. There are over 20 unsolved cases in Chautauqua County involving women who have gone missing or were murdered. 'There's a lot of work to be done, a lot of files to be read,' said Chautauqua County Sheriff Jim Quattrone. 'It's slower than we would like it to be, but it is important for us to give the loved ones of these victims — offer them some hope, not giving them false hope, but let them know that they're not forgotten and that we're seeking justice.' Southern Tier resident DJ Abram is making it his mission to figure out what happened in one of those cases that occurred almost 50 years ago. Abram helps run the Facebook page 'Who Killed Beth Ann Patterson Brown?' Brown was murdered in 1978 in Brocton, N.Y., after leaving a popular town bar. Abram said the community deserves answers, not only for this cold case, but for the other cases in the county. 'There's somebody walking around who's responsible for this and it's heartbreaking for the families,' he said. Police have not confirmed to WIVB News 4 if they're looking into whether accused killer Richard Fox has any connection to Brown's case. Abram said Fox did grow up in the area where Brown's murder happened. Fox is accused of murdering two Buffalo women whose bodies were found in 2021 near the Chautauqua County Rails to Trails bike path. He's also a person of interest in a case in Niagara Falls, where police discovered human remains in a basement in the Falls. 'He was around 14, 15 at the time. Being that this happened in the middle of the night, being near a bar, I can't imagine a 14, 15-year-old would be hanging around a bar,' Abram said. 'It was a very brutal murder. Is it possible? It certainly is possible, but it doesn't seem likely in my mind.' Last year, Congressman Nick Langworthy helped secure $100,000 in federal funding to help Chautauqua County crack these cold cases. 'I was honored to secure $100,000 for the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office as part of last year's appropriations process to support their Abducted, Missing, Murdered, and Unidentified Women's Initiative,' Langworthy said. 'This funding is about more than numbers — it's about justice, remembrance, and action. We owe it to the women who have vanished, to those whose lives were stolen, and to their families, to ensure their stories are not forgotten, their cases are fully investigated, and that every effort is made to deliver the answers and accountability they deserve. I salute Sheriff Quattrone for his vision in opening a cold case effort to bring just to these families and victims.'
