The southern Russian border region of Belgorod has faced a new wave of Ukrainian drone attacks, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Thursday, adding that several people have been injured. The city of Belgorod was also targeted by UAVs on Wednesday.
Gladkov stated on his official Telegram channel that Belgorod residents were experiencing 'something that they have not yet lived through in modern history,' describing repeated strikes on the regional government building.
He said drones had hit the upper floors, damaging his office and the floors of the regional Duma. According to the governor, only a small number of staff remain in the building while the rest have been evacuated and instructed to work from home.
The governor shared a video of a drone striking a passenger car in the city. Three people were reported to have been injured in the incident. One man was hospitalized in serious condition with shrapnel wounds, a woman sustained a burn to her forearm, and another man suffered a leg wound and barotrauma.
Other drone attacks caused damage to several residential buildings, a store, and six vehicles. Another attack took place in the village of Razumnoye in the Belgorod district, Gladkov said, adding that a woman was injured when a Ukrainian UAV struck her home.
On Wednesday, the governor also reported that drones had attacked the city and Belgorod district, injuring eight civilians and five members of the 'Orlan' state enterprise.
Belgorod authorities have ordered all state institutions to switch to remote work on Thursday and Friday. Large shopping centers will remain closed until Saturday, and outdoor events have been canceled until Sunday. Parks, beaches, and other public gathering places will be shut for the next two days. Authorities have urged private businesses to follow the same measures and advised residents to minimize time outdoors.
Russia's Investigative Committee has launched criminal cases under the articles for terrorism over the attack on Belgorod as well as Thursday's drone raid on the southern city of Rostov-on-Don.

US efforts to settle Ukraine conflict ‘energetic and sincere'

The US is making a genuine effort to stop the fighting in Ukraine and reach agreements that would account for the interests of all parties involved, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said. Putin is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump on Friday in Anchorage, Alaska, to discuss ways of ending the Ukraine conflict, as well as steps toward normalizing relations between Moscow and Washington. On Thursday, Putin met with top government officials in Moscow to discuss the upcoming summit and 'the stage where we are with the current US administration.' He said that the American leadership is making 'quite energetic and sincere efforts to stop the hostilities' and working to 'create long-term conditions of peace between our countries and in Europe, and in the world as a whole.' Putin added that this process could be further advanced if Russia and the US reach agreements on strategic offensive weapons control in the next stages of negotiations. Among the officials present at Thursday's meeting were Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, all of whom will be traveling to Alaska on Friday to take part in the Putin-Trump summit. According to the Kremlin, the event will begin with a one-on-one conversation between the two leaders, followed by a meeting of the Russian and US delegations. Trump has described the summit as a 'feel-out meeting' that will help him determine whether the Ukraine conflict can be resolved. He has said that if the talks go well, he may seek a second round of negotiations involving Putin and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Thursday that Trump will pursue all possible options for a peaceful end to the conflict during his meeting with Putin. She added that the US president would prefer not to impose any new sanctions on Russia but instead resolve the situation through diplomacy.

Putin outlines prospects for nuclear deal with US

Russia and the US could reach a deal on strategic nuclear arms if the two sides make progress on resolving the Ukraine conflict, President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday, ahead of his highly anticipated meeting with his US counterpart, Donald Trump, in Anchorage, Alaska. The New START treaty, the only remaining nuclear arms control accord between the two countries, was suspended by Moscow in 2023 over obstacles to inspections and Western military participation in the Ukraine conflict. 'If we move to the next stages and reach agreements in the field of strategic offensive arms control, this will create long-term conditions for peace between our countries, in Europe, and in the world as a whole,' Putin said. In force since 2011, the treaty limits the US and Russia to no more than 1,550 deployed strategic nuclear warheads and provides for mutual inspections to verify compliance. Russia suspended its participation in the treaty, which expires next February, in 2023. Putin said Moscow's requests to visit certain sites were either ignored or rejected on 'formal grounds.' He also pointed to the West being 'directly involved' in Kiev's attempts to strike Russian strategic bomber bases. Moscow has stressed, however, that it intends to abide by the New START provisions. Trump said in July that he would like to maintain the limits on US and Russian strategic nuclear arsenals. 'That's not an agreement you want expiring. We're starting to work on that,' the US president said. Last month, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Russia and the US are not holding any talks on a New START treaty extension, citing the deplorable state of relations between the two countries caused by the policies of the administration of former US President Joe Biden.
