Egypt partners with Infinity, Hassan Allam to launch EV charging stations - Energy

Al-Ahram Weekly20-02-2025
Hassan Allam Utilities (H.A Utilities) and Infinity have partnered with the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to establish a comprehensive network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across Egypt.
Infinity is Egypt's largest renewable energy provider of EV charging solutions and H.A Utilities is the investment and development arm of Hassan Allam Holding, a leading Egyptian engineering and construction group.
The petroleum ministry, meanwhile, is represented by state-owned gas giants Misr Petroleum and Gastec.
This collaboration aims to enhance the country's EV infrastructure by deploying alternate current (AC) and direct current (DC) chargers at high-traffic filling stations.
AC charging is the most common method for charging electric vehicles. However, due to power conversion, it takes longer than DC charging, which offers a faster solution for fully electric cars by supplying direct current without needing the car's onboard converter.
Petroleum Minister Eng. Karim Badawi and executives from the partnering companies signed the shareholders' agreement during the EGYPES conference.
This initiative is a significant component of the ministry's strategy to promote sustainable mobility and diversify energy solutions in Egypt.
'By joining forces with industry leaders, we are not only expanding charging infrastructure but also laying the groundwork for a more sustainable mobility ecosystem,' stated Infinity co-founder and CEO Nayer Fouad.
He expressed confidence that this collaboration will enhance the adoption of EVs in Egypt and position the country as a regional leader in electric mobility.
H.A. Utilities CEO Dalia Wahba echoed this sentiment, highlighting the commitment to investing in sustainable infrastructure that supports Egypt's energy transition. This partnership is expected to facilitate the shift towards eco-friendly transportation solutions nationwide.
Transitioning to renewable resources
'Car exhausts remains the major air polluter in Egypt,' a 2018 study by The Eco Experts, an environmentalist global platform, revealed.
Since that report, the government has been working to adopt and integrate renewable energy solutions, with particular attention allocated to the possibilities presented by EVs.
However, EV sales currently make up just 0.1 percent of the automobile market in Egypt, with their numbers hovering around 5,000.
'This is largely due to the underdeveloped infrastructure of the charging station network, despite the state's efforts to expand it across the country,' Alaa Al-Sabaa, a member of the Automotive Division of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, told Ahram Online.
'The limited capacity of charging stations in Egypt, which reaches a maximum of 48 Kilowatts per hour, also pales in comparison with their European counterparts, where stations boast capacities up to 150 Kilowatts per hour. This disparity results in longer charging times in Egypt, ranging from 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the station's output and the car's battery size,' he added.

United Bank contributes EGP 600m to syndicated loan worth EGP 6.2bn for Mountain View project

United Bank has participated with EGP 600m in a syndicated long-term loan worth EGP 6.2bn, arranged by a consortium of six banks led by Banque Misr, to finance part of the Mountain View 1.1 project's EGP 14.4bn investment cost. The facility has a maximum tenor of seven years. CEO Ashraf El Kady said the bank's participation reflects its commitment to supporting the state's development strategy and contributing to sustainable, integrated infrastructure projects that enhance citizens' quality of life. He highlighted the construction sector's vital role in driving economic growth and GDP expansion, noting that bank financing for such projects helps stimulate investment and create jobs. El Kady also stressed the importance of directing investment to promote balanced geographic and demographic development, easing population pressure on the Nile Valley and Delta, while supporting housing supply for various income segments—particularly middle-income and social housing—thereby fostering social stability. Deputy Managing Director for Business Sectors Nevine Kashmiry said United Bank is a major supporter of Egypt's construction sector, given its central role in development. She noted that the country's urban expansion under the 'New Republic' includes the New Administrative Capital and 12 new smart cities such as New Alexandria, New Assiut, New Suez, and New Alamein. Deputy CEO Farag Abdel Hamid described the participation as a reflection of the bank's national role in shaping Egypt's future under Vision 2030, while Deputy CEO Moataz El Kassaby stressed the bank's preference for partnering with developers committed to quality and sustainability standards to maximise economic and social returns. Albir Nasan, Head of Syndicated Loans, said United Bank's involvement in financing real estate projects aligns with its longstanding role in supporting the Egyptian economy and the state's urban development goals under Vision 2030.

Egypt, Turkey Eye $15 Billion in Annual Trade as Ties Strengthen

Taarek Refaat Egypt and Turkey are setting their sights on raising bilateral trade to $15 billion annually, as both nations deepen cooperation across key economic sectors. The announcement came during talks in the Mediterranean city of El Alamein, where Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Ati met his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan. The two ministers first held a private meeting, followed by expanded discussions with their respective delegations. According to Egypt's foreign ministry, Cairo is seeking to attract more Turkish direct investment and expand collaboration in manufacturing, energy, transport, tourism, and other strategic industries. Abdel Ati stressed the importance of continuing to implement the outcomes of the inaugural High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council meeting, held in Istanbul in September 2024 under the leadership of both presidents. 'The goal is to build on the agreements already reached in economic, investment, and sectoral cooperation to launch a new phase of partnership between our two countries,' Abdel Ati said. The Egyptian minister also expressed appreciation for Ankara's official endorsement of Egypt's candidate for UNESCO's Director-General post, former Minister of Antiquities Khaled El-Enany. On his part, Turkey's top diplomat described the bilateral relationship as 'making progress on all fronts,' reiterating the joint ambition to reach the $15 billion trade target. The ministers highlighted the symbolic significance of 2025, marking the centennial of formal diplomatic relations between Egypt and Turkey, a milestone both sides say they want to commemorate with concrete economic achievements. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
