CM to launch new ration cards in Puri on Thursday
BHUBANESWAR: The state government will start distribution of ration cards to new beneficiaries of National Food Security Act (NFSA) and State Food Security Scheme (SFSS) from April 24 (Thursday).
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will launch the distribution at a state-level function to celebrate the Panchayati Raj Diwas in Puri on the day. He will give away the new ration cards to few beneficiaries in the presence of all members of his council of ministers, Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare minister Krushna Chandra Patra told mediapersons here on Tuesday.
Patra said around 5.9 lakh beneficiaries have become eligible after survey and eKYC verification. The new cards will be distributed in phases at block, municipality and NAC level. The department has already instructed all block development officers, municipal commissioners and executive officers to prepare coloured ration cards with lamination.
The minister said as many as 25 lakh beneficiaries still have not updated their eKYC. Officials concerned have been asked to conduct field verification to know the status of the beneficiaries and submit reports to the department based on which the final list will be prepared.
'The last date of eKYC verification of existing beneficiaries was March 31, 2025. However, we have not closed the verification option. The government is committed to ensuring that not a single eligible person is deprived of free ration,' Patra said.
The CM will also disburse the sixth phase of Subhadra Yojana and launch the block-level stadium project by virtually laying the foundation stones for a few blocks in Puri. The state government has approved an outlay of `4,124 crore for construction of stadiums in all blocks over a period of five years.

Tribals face ration access crisis amidst long treks, eKYC glitches
Paderu (Asr District): Tribal communities in Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) district, particularly those residing in Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) villages and remote hilly regions, are grappling with severe challenges in accessing essential ration supplies. The absence of local ration depots in most villages is forcing residents to trek arduous distances of 10 to 30 km, often through rough, undulating terrain, to reach the nearest distribution point. Compounding the problem are widespread issues with the eKYC (electronic Know Your Customer) process, which locals report, is failing in several areas, creating additional hurdles for beneficiaries. Since ration depots are typically situated at panchayat headquarters, the considerable distances between villages and the critical lack of transport facilities are leaving many tribals stranded without access to their entitled provisions. 'There are no roads or transport facilities connecting many of these villages. In some distressing cases, beneficiaries are being carried in stretchers just to complete their eKYC registration,' stated Dara Ravi, a social worker from Gowridevipeta in Yetapaka mandal, highlighting the dire situation. The impact of these challenges is evident across the district. In Dayeti panchayat of Ananthagiri mandal, the nearest ration depot is a daunting 15 km away. Residents of Jajulabanda and surrounding villages in Koyyuru mandal, comprising approximately 180 ration card holders, now face a 26-km journey, a significant increase from the previous system where a mobile ration van would serve them within a 6-km radius. The recent discontinuation of these mobile ration vans has exacerbated the crisis for remote tribal settlements. Govind, a tribal community leader from Gummi panchayat, detailed the extent of the hardship: villagers from Kalyanagummi, Karriguda and Kadarevu must walk between 10 and 30 kilometres to collect their rations. Similarly, residents of Madarebu (Pedakota panchayat), Buriga and Chinna Konela (Rompelli panchayat) face a 16-kilometre journey. In NR Puram Panchayat, villages such as DK Pathi, Chimidivalasa, and Rayapadu are 12 kilometres from the nearest depot. Villagers of Thalaripadu in Ananthagiri mandal also endure a 12-kilometer trek for their monthly supplies. The issue is not isolated, with many tribal villages in G Madugula mandal also awaiting improved access. Some villagers express frustration, suggesting that establishing permanent ration depots in each village before discontinuing the mobile van service would have been a more effective transition. However, others recall inherent flaws in the previous mobile delivery system. 'Earlier, the van would come just once a month without a fixed schedule. If we missed that day, we lost our rations entirely,' recounted Satyanarayana from Gowridevipeta. He acknowledged that the current system, which allows rations to be collected from shops for up to 15 days each month, offers a slight improvement in availability but remains largely inaccessible for many due to distance. Addressing the pressing issue, CPM leader K Govind Rao has urged the government to establish new ration shops strategically, ensuring that every tribal habitation has access to a depot within a 10-km radius. He emphasised that this measure, combined with robust improvements in road infrastructure and the provision of reliable transport facilities in remote tribal areas, would significantly alleviate the hardships faced by these vulnerable communities in accessing essential commodities.

Beneficiaries await enhanced pension in Ganjam
1 2 3 Berhampur: Four months have passed since chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi launched the enhanced pension programme for people aged 80 and above and for those with 80% or more disability on Jan 16, but K. Kanta Rao, 45, of Bhaliagaga and J. Salema Reddy, 81, of Kotharsingh in Ganjam district's Rangeilunda block are yet to receive it. The monthly pension was increased from Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,500, as BJP promised in its election campaign. Kanta and Salema are pension holders under the social security scheme due to their disability and old age respectively. "Like them, several beneficiaries in the district have been left out possibly due to lack of coordination with panchayats," said N. Damburu Reddy, a former zilla parishad member. He urged the district administration to hold camps at the panchayat level to identify eligible beneficiaries in villages. District social security officer (DSSO) Krushna Chandra Behera said almost all eligible persons might receive the enhanced pension of Rs 3,500 from this month, as the govt identified 38,022 beneficiaries under the scheme. While most of them are receiving Rs 1,000 per month, persons with more than 60% disability are receiving Rs 1,200 per month, sources said. The DSSO said around 64,000 people had applied to receive the pension under the social security scheme but 54,000 were found to be eligible. The district administration has written to the govt, and they will be included in the beneficiary list after receiving approval, he said. Eligible beneficiaries are also being included in phases after removing old beneficiaries after their deaths, he added. He said administration has given pension to some beneficiaries on basis of available funds. Others will get in the next round and no one will be left out, he added.

Odisha govt to plant 7.5 cr trees in the state in one year: CM Majhi
BHUBANESWAR: Emphasising the importance of cleaner and greener environment for a healthy society, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday announced the government's plan of planting 7.5 crore trees across the state within the next one year. Addressing a state-level function held at the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) to celebrate World Environment Day, the chief minister said the state has achieved a net increase of approximately 560 sq km in forest and tree cover, which is the fourth-highest among all states. The common people and institutions have planted nearly two crore saplings, setting a record, he said. Expressing concern over the increasing reliance on plastic, especially single-use plastic in daily life, which has emerged as one of the three major problems alongside climate change, environmental degradation and pollution, Majhi called upon the public to take a pledge to end plastic pollution and maintain a healthy and clean environment for citizens. He stressed the importance of creating a greener environment and preserving nature to mitigate the severity of pollution which can ensure a healthy life for future generations. 'Our government has taken the initiative to ban single-use plastic, promote sustainable alternatives and strengthen waste management systems. We have also launched the State Clean Air Programme to reduce air pollution in densely populated areas and improve air quality in which the State Pollution Control Board is playing an active role,' he added. Emphasising the need for societal change, he noted the success of the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, which has resulted in the planting of over six crore trees. The CM felicitated 185 Prakruti Mitra and 211 Prakruti Bandhu volunteers from various districts who have made significant contributions to environmental protection and conservation. He also congratulated all participants and winners of the state-level eco-model exhibition on 'Ending Plastic Pollution' and extended his best wishes to the schools and teachers who won the best Eco-Club award. The chief minister along with minister for Forest, Environment and Climate Change, Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia and chief secretary Manoj Ahuja planted saplings under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' programme at the College of Agriculture here.
