Centre continuously hindering TN development: CPM
Madurai: A 'Nadaipayanam Pracharam' (walk campaign) was taken out in Madurai by CPM cadres on Wednesday and Thursday condemning the 'anti-people' policies of the BJP-led Union govt.
The party said that Tamil Nadu's development through projects and schemes were being hindered at every step.
The campaign was conducted by CPM cadres at 10 places on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. In his inaugural address on Wednesday, MP Su Venkatesan charged the central govt and BJP with deliberately stalling several developmental projects, either temporarily or indefinitely. "Since Tamil Nadu is a progressive and secular state and their efforts to disrupt communal and religious harmony are not working, BJP is targeting developmental projects of Tamil Nadu, by shifting new ones or stalling existing projects.
The Madurai AIIMS project, even after six years, is now only 25% complete. But, even for one brick, we fought tooth and nail," he said.
The MP said several railway projects like the Madurai-Thoothukudi new line via Aruppukottai were stalled for years. "BJP is clearly rejecting Tamil culture and history through rejecting the Keeladi findings. They are also rejecting Tamil Nadu's development and neglecting its welfare.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday accused the BJP of attempting to derail a potential alliance between his party and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by his estranged cousin Raj Thackeray. The remarks drew a sharp response from Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who hit back by accusing Uddhav of 'abandoning' Hindutva. Uddhav was speaking at his party's 59th foundation day rally in Mumbai and used one of his frequent barbs, referring to the Shinde-led faction as 'gaddars' (traitors) for breaking away from him three years ago and aligning with the BJP. Both Uddhav and Shinde held separate rallies to mark the Shiv Sena's foundation day, which was established by Uddhav's father Bal Thackeray in 1966, news agency PTI reported. The Shinde-led Sena celebrated at NSCI Dome in Worli, while the UBT faction gathered at Shanmukhananda Hall in Sion. Uddhav alleged that behind-the-scenes efforts were underway to block unity among 'Marathi parties,' saying that meetings were being held at hotels—an apparent reference to Raj Thackeray's recent interaction with Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis at a five-star hotel in Mumbai. He also hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging inconsistency in his stance towards the opposition. 'When the opposition contested the Lok Sabha polls by forming the INDIA group, PM Narendra Modi compared the opposition bloc to the terror outfit Indian Mujahideen,' Thackeray said, adding, 'after Operation Sindoor, Modi sent MPs of the same opposition bloc all over the world to present India's stand.' Thackeray further alleged hypocrisy in the BJP's anti-corruption stand. 'The BJP maligns opposition leaders with corruption charges, and then inducts them into the party,' he said. He urged BJP loyalists to speak out against this trend: 'If 'original' BJP workers have any self-respect, they should oppose the entry of people, whom they had accused of corruption in the past, in their party.' Responding to Uddhav Thackeray's criticism, Maharashtra deputy CM Eknath Shinde accused him of being power-hungry and said that's why he was now seeking an alliance with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Shinde asserted that his faction continues to operate according to the ideology of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray. 'Whatever votes they got was because of the Congress as the real Shiv Sena voters have bid them good bye,' he said. He further said, 'Balasaheb Thackeray opposed Congress, but those desperate for power aligned with that party as they are desperate for power. UBT has betrayed the Marathi people, Shiv Sena voters and have abandoned Hindutva.' Shinde didn't hold back on his personal attacks, saying, 'I have never seen a betrayer like Uddhav Thackeray who changes colours like a chameleon.' He reaffirmed his commitment to Hindutva, saying, 'I will never compromise on Hindutva for power.' Challenging Thackeray's political alliances, Shinde asked, 'Why do you hesitate to call Balasaheb as Hindu Hriday Samrat? You join hands with those who abuse Modi and (Amit) Shah who fulfilled Balasaheb's dream of Ram temple and abolishing Article 370. Why do you sit with those who abuse Savarkar and Hindu religion?' Shipwrecks: HC raises concern over state forming panel to negotiate claim details with vessel owners
Kochi: High court on Thursday raised concerns over the state govt forming a committee to negotiate compensation details with the owners of MSC ELSA 3, the cargo vessel which capsized off the Kerala coast. A bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji observed that since the state proposes to invoke the high court's admiralty jurisdiction to seek compensation, it may be appropriate to defer the negotiation process for the time being. The observation came while HC was hearing public interest litigations filed by former MP T N Prathapan and Ummer Ottummal of Malappuram, seeking a comprehensive compensation package for fishermen and other stakeholders affected by recent shipwrecks along the Kerala coast. During hearing, the state submitted that the environment department special secretary has been appointed as the principal impact assessment officer. It was also stated that the state disaster management department has constituted a committee of govt officers to negotiate compensation for the damage caused by MSC ELSA 3. Accordingly, the bench adjourned the petitions to July 2 for further response from the state and other stakeholders.

Opposition criticises Jammu and Kashmir government for ‘dragging its feet' on quota revamp
The Jammu and Kashmir Government is dragging its feet on finalising a report on the rationalisation of reservation categories in the Union Territory (UT), which is being studied by a Cabinet sub-committee. The committee, in turn, submitted it to the Law Department for legal vetting months ago, and it has been bogged down since. Several opposition parties have expressed dismay and demanded that the Cabinet report be made public. J&K's reservation quota was revised under Central rule after new categories like Paharis, Paddari Tribe, Koli, and Gadda Brahmin, etc., were included in 2024. The open merit category was reduced significantly, to less than 40%. The ruling National Conference (NC), which promised to rationalise the quota, constituted a Cabinet Sub Committee (CSC), which was to file its report in six months. However, no final decision was taken on the rationalisation and no deadline was set for the Law Department, evoking sharp reactions from Opposition parties and open merit aspirants. 'Despite the six-month deadline, the Cabinet has neither offered clarity nor transparency on the report, only vague assertions and now a reported referral to the Law Department. This ambiguity is not just disappointing but also damaging,' Engineer Ehtisham Khan, a student rights activist, told The Hindu. Aspirants in the dark He accused the NC Government of 'keeping the open merit aspirants in the dark yet again.' Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader and MLA Waheed-ur-Rehmaan Parra said the Cabinet move has left 'thousands of students heartbroken and disillusioned.' 'This is a deliberate denial of justice. These students have already endured violence, lockdowns, and lost opportunities. Now, as they seek fair representation and rationalised reservation, the government is pushing them further to the margins,' Mr. Parra said. 'It has no intention of doing anything. Now, coming to this draft proposal. To the best of my knowledge, anything sent to the Cabinet should be vetted by the Law Department. It is not the other way around. It looks like another round of time-wasting tactics,' Mr. Lone said. J&K Apni Party (JKAP) president Altaf Bukhari asked the government to set a timeline for addressing the reservation issue. 'Whether the government focus is on revising the CSC report or obtaining legal vetting, it is essential that a clear and fixed timeline be established,' Mr. Bukhari said. He called for 'a judicious reservation policy.' 'One thing is clear beyond a doubt that the current reservation policy is highly flawed and injudicious. There is broad consensus that we require a more judicious reservation policy to protect merit,' Mr. Bukhari said.
