Campaign helps boost students' cyber safety awareness

Published on: Thursday, July 24, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 24, 2025 Text Size: Fahmi (fourth left) with teachers and students at the Safe Internet Programme held at Sekolah Kebangsaan St Mary Kampung Limbahau in Papar on Wednesday. – Bernama photo PAPAR: A Safe Internet Campaign organised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) at SMK St Mary in Limbahau is helping to boost digital literacy and cyber safety awareness among rural students in Sabah. The initiative, under the Ministry of Communications, goes beyond improving internet access by promoting safe, ethical and responsible online behaviour, particularly among young people. Launched by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, the programme included online safety awareness sessions, interactive activities and teacher training designed to instil strong values and resilience in students facing online threats. Form Three student Faradira Horatio, appointed as the school's K-DAT Captain Icon for the campaign, said such programmes should be expanded to other rural areas to ensure all students benefit from cybersecurity education. 'It teaches us to use the internet and social media responsibly, something many students tend to overlook,' she said, adding that she plans to actively raise awareness among her peers about cyberbullying and promote safe, responsible online behaviour. Form Four student Lee Yuh Hui said the campaign provided new insights on digital footprints and the risks of irresponsible internet use. 'Many students still lack awareness about safe digital practices. This campaign helps fill that gap,' she added. Form Five student Steve Noel said the initiative helped students distinguish between credible and false information online. In a statement, MCMC said the campaign reflects a whole-of-nation approach under the Malaysia Madani framework, involving collaboration between schools, government agencies, parents and local authorities to deliver digital safety messages effectively. 'The internet is more than a communication tool, it's a platform to shape values, spread knowledge, and foster unity. Let's ensure this space remains safe, ethical and constructive for future generations,' the statement said. Fahmi also joined students in an interactive session, advising them to remain vigilant about cyber threats. Also present were Communications Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and MCMC Chief of State Affairs Bukhari Yahya. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Rural Sarawak communities face fire risks amid limited access, resources, says Sibu Bomba chief

Firefighters from Bomba Zone 4 Sibu in full gear as they prepare to respond to emergencies — a task made even more challenging in Sarawak's remote and hard-to-reach areas. – File photo SIBU (July 24): Communities in rural Sarawak remain vulnerable to fires due to poor road access, limited fire station coverage, and a shortage of firefighting resources, said Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 4 Sibu Chief, PgKB I Andy Alie. He said in many interior areas like Julau and Selangau, response time becomes a race against terrain with firefighting teams often face significant challenges, navigating narrow or unpaved roads, or even rivers, just to reach emergency sites. 'In some areas, weak mobile coverage further complicates efforts to even call for help,' Andy told The Borneo Post. 'With fire stations spread apart and firefighting resources stretched thin, delays in response can prove critical. 'In an emergency, every minute counts. For some longhouses, help could be 45 minutes away,' he said, citing Julau where the nearest station is located in Bintangor. Despite these challenges, Andy noted a positive shift in community engagement. 'Since January, we've conducted over 200 fire safety programmes in schools, kampungs, longhouses, and even industrial areas,' he said. 'People are responding well – especially in longhouses and schools. They're taking ownership of fire safety,' he shared. Among the department's active initiatives are the Junior Fire Club for students, the establishment of 17 community fire and rescue teams (CFRTs), and outreach programmes in longhouse communities through 25 fire awareness campaigns. 'These programmes are making a difference. We're already seeing fewer minor fires and fewer cases caused by the careless use of electricity,' Andy said. To improve emergency response, he said Bomba has proposed the construction of new fire stations in high-risk rural zones. 'Dalat, for example, is currently served by a station in Mukah which is up to 30 minutes away. 'In places like Julau, we're proposing new stations to bring help closer to the people,' he explained. However, he emphasised that fire safety is not just about physical infrastructure but also collaboration with communities. Looking ahead, Bomba Zone 4 Sibu will focus on strengthening its partnership with local leaders to promote grassroots-level fire prevention. Plans are also in place to expand the CFRT programme to more longhouses and remote areas. In tandem, he said firefighters will undergo more intensive training to prepare for natural disasters like floods and droughts. Fire safety audits will also be conducted at high-risk premises, including factories, schools, and elderly care centres, to ensure compliance. Andy also issued several reminders for household fire safety, particularly during dry spells and festive periods when risks are higher. 'Don't overload your sockets. Never leave stoves or candles unattended. Avoid open burning, especially during dry weather. 'And if you're going away, make sure your home is safe. Fire safety isn't just the job of firefighters. It starts with all of us,' he concluded. bomba fire risk lead poor road access rural areas

25,000 Putatan folks hit by prolonged water cut

Published on: Thursday, July 24, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 24, 2025 By: Nora Ahmad Text Size: Kg Merutum residents getting water from a truck sent there by Kanny. PUTATAN: Some 25,000 residents in the district have been experiencing water supply disruption for the past month, severely affecting their daily routines, including bathing, cooking and cleaning. The most affected areas include Kampung Lok Kawi, Kampung Meruntum, Kampung Pasir Putih, Kampung Petagas, Kampung Ketiau and Kampung Muhibbah, with some residents having to source water externally, either by buying from private water trucks or bottled water. Sabah Perikatan Nasional (PN) Youth Exco Kanny Chew Ly Choi @ Adamz urged the State Water Department to address the water prolonged supply disruption by taking concrete action. 'A prolonged water supply disruption is a major inconvenience for the people. 'We, the Sabah PN Youth, strongly urge the Water Department to act immediately and find an effective solution,' he told reporters, Wednesday. As a temporary measure to assist residents while waiting for a comprehensive solution from the authorities, Chew said he had arranged for water tanker deliveries to Kampung Meruntum. 'Kampung Meruntum is one of the areas without water supply. We've stepped in to help as much as we can, but this is not a real solution. 'This issue requires serious intervention and swift action by the responsible authorities,' he said. He called for both short-term and long-term solutions to be implemented without delay. 'Such measures are necessary to ensure the people are not continually burdened by a problem that could have been prevented.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
