Delhi Confidential: Across Party Lines
They may be bitter critics in Parliament but a battery of politicians from across parties turned up at TMC MP Mahua Moitra's wedding reception at a prominent hotel on Tuesday. Besides Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and MoS (Health) Anupriya Patel, other prominent political figures who attended the event included Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and P Chidambaram; Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav, Dimple Yadav and Iqra Choudhary; Supriya Sule of the NCP(SP); and Priyanka Chaturvedi of Shiv Sena (UBT). Telangana CM Revanth Reddy and his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann were also there. Moitra, the TMC's Krishnanagar MP, tied the knot with former BJD MP and senior lawyer Pinaki Misra in May. Amid tensions with Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, Shiv Sena leader and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde met PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday. Shinde meeting the PM with his family was keenly watched by BJP leaders in the capital. Shinde has been caught in a power struggle with Fadnavis and also faces a threat from Uddhav and Raj Thackeray after their reunion. Party insiders are guessing what was discussed and whether he got any assurance from the PM. Among the invitees for 'At Home' at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Independence Day will be farmers cultivating oilseeds (soybean and mustard) under the Centre's National Mission on Edible Oilseeds (NMEOS). The inclusion of oilseed growers in the list of guests is significant amid government's stress to make India self-reliant in edible oils.

Bihar SIR Row: Supreme Court Asks For Election Commission's Response On 'Removal' Of 65 L Voters
The SC instructed the ECI to submit its reply by August 9, specifying the reasons for each deletion, such as death, permanent migration, or duplication The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to provide a comprehensive response to a petition seeking detailed reasons for the removal of over 65 lakh voters from Bihar's draft electoral rolls. This petition was filed by the NGO Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), which has expressed concerns about the transparency and integrity of the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) process preceding the upcoming assembly elections. A bench headed by Justice Surya Kant instructed the ECI to submit its reply by August 9, specifying the reasons for each deletion, such as death, permanent migration, or duplication. The ECI had previously released a draft roll comprising 7.24 crore voters but excluded more than 65 lakh names, citing various reasons, including 22.34 lakh deletions due to death and 36.28 lakh due to permanent absence or migration. In a prior hearing, the Supreme Court advised the ECI to focus on 'en masse inclusion" rather than 'en masse exclusion", underscoring the significance of every citizen's right to vote. The court's order to disclose detailed, booth-wise information aims to facilitate thorough cross-verification by political parties and the public during the claims and objections period, which lasts until September 1. Opposition parties have raised concerns that the revision process might result in the wrongful disenfranchisement of numerous eligible voters, especially those from marginalised communities. The case is set for further hearing on August 12. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Shinde meets Modi, Shah, refutes suggestions of Mahayuti trouble
MUMBAI: Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde, who visited Delhi on Wednesday to meet prime minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah, rejected rumours that he was there to sort out his issues with his Mahayuti allies. Maharashtra's deputy chief minister said that he and his family members went to congratulate Modi on the success of Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev, and he later had a separate one-on-one meeting with him. (PTI Photo)(PTI08_06_2025_000437A) (PTI) Accompanied by the Shiv Sena's MPs, Shinde also met Amit Shah. This is his third visit to the capital in the last one month amid speculation in political circles that he and his men have been cornered in the Mahayuti government. When media persons asked him if he was an indirect target of his allies, Shinde replied that his party had performed well in two elections and would also win the forthcoming local body polls. Speaking at a press conference, the politician showered fulsome praise on Modi and Shah, saying that Shah had just become the longest-serving home minister in the history of India, completing an uninterrupted term of 2,258 days. 'We met him to convey our heartfelt congratulations,' he said. Shinde called Shah's leadership 'decisive' and stated that from abrogating Article 370—thereby fulfilling the dream of Bal Thackeray—to leading Operation Mahadev against terrorism and effectively curbing Naxalism, the home minister had shown 'unwavering commitment and visionary leadership'. 'From cooperative development to national security, his contribution has been exemplary,' he gushed. The deputy CM took a snipe at the Thackeray cousins Raj and Uddhav when asked about a possible alliance between the two. 'So what will happen if the two come together?' he asked. 'People don't vote for names but for accomplishments. They don't vote for people who sit at home. Parties have a right to get into alliances but the people decide whom to vote for.' There were some questions on Thackeray attending the opposition alliance INDIA meet on August 7 but Shinde refused to answer them. The Shiv Sena chief announced that his party had extended its unconditional support to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for the upcoming vice-presidential election. He affirmed that his party remained one of the oldest and most trusted allies of the NDA.
