Seville [Spain], July 1 (ANI): Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman, currently on an official visit to Spain, Portugal, and Brazil, delivered a strong pitch for mobilising private capital for sustainable development at the International Business Forum Leadership Summit titled 'From FFD4 Outcome to Implementation: Unlocking the Potential of Private Capital for Sustainable Development' in Seville, Spain.
Addressing global leaders and investors, Sitharaman highlighted that while private investment has shown encouraging growth in recent years, thanks to a rise in innovative financial instruments and traditional sources, much more needs to be done.
In a social media post, the minister said, 'Private capital mobilisation remains significantly below what is required, with low and middle-income countries receiving a disproportionately small share. This underscores the urgent need for targeted efforts to overcome investment barriers and better align financial flows with development priorities.'
Highlighting India's own journey, Sitharaman stressed the importance of addressing perceived investment risks in emerging markets.
India, she noted, has taken significant steps to overcome these challenges. Sitharaman stated, 'India has addressed this challenge by establishing independent regulators, implementing transparent bidding processes, standardising contracts, and improving the ease of doing business. These reforms have significantly enhanced investor confidence and reduced transaction costs.'
The Finance Minister also highlighted the role of strong domestic financial systems. India has focused on strengthening its banking sector and deepening capital markets to support large-scale financing in infrastructure and industry.
She said India's regulatory frameworks now better balance investor protection with innovation and flexibility, creating an enabling environment for long-term investment.
FM added, 'Our regulatory frameworks have evolved with market needs - balancing investor protection with innovation and flexibility - creating a more conducive environment for long-term investment.'
One of the standout examples presented by Sitharaman was India's transformation in the renewable energy sector. From just 2.8 GW of solar energy installed in 2014, India has expanded its capacity to over 110 GW.
This success, she said, 'was enabled by clear national targets, streamlined procurement, and government-backed risk mitigation. This model attracted institutional investors, including pension and sovereign wealth funds.'
On the sidelines of the FFD4 Summit, Sitharaman also held bilateral meetings with various global leaders.
She met Shane Reti, New Zealand's Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology, Universities, Statistics, and Pacific Peoples. Both ministers discussed cooperation in defence, education, technology, and agriculture. The two leaders reaffirmed the shared democratic values and strong people-to-people ties between India and New Zealand.
Sitharaman also spoke about India's growing International Financial Services Centre at GIFT City and highlighted investment opportunities in banking, bullion exchange, capital markets, the FinTech ecosystem, insurance, and reinsurance.
She also noted the importance of educational ties, with many Indian students pursuing higher education in New Zealand.
The Finance Minister also held talks with Reem Alabali-Radovan, Germany's Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Sitharaman congratulated her on her new role and discussed cooperation under the India-Germany Green and Sustainable Development Partnership.
The discussions included collaboration in areas such as green energy, urban mobility, sustainable urban development, and ecological livelihoods. Minister Alabali-Radovan expressed interest in deepening bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation with India.
Sitharaman is leading an Indian delegation from the Department of Economic Affairs during this official trip from June 30 to July 5.
Her itinerary includes a visit to Lisbon, Portugal, where she will hold a bilateral meeting with the Portuguese Finance Minister and interact with the Indian diaspora and investors. In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, she will address the 10th Annual Meeting of the New Development Bank (NDB) as India's Governor and also participate in the BRICS Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting.
She is also expected to hold bilateral discussions with her counterparts from Brazil, China, Indonesia, and Russia. (ANI)

PM Modi to inaugurate new terminal of Guwahati airport in November: Assam CM

Guwahati (Assam) [India], July 6 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the new terminal of Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, and a 6-lane road, with both the projects set to be completed in November, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday. 'We are constructing a new airport (terminal). It will be the most beautiful airport in the country, and the PM will inaugurate it in November along with a 6-lane road,' Sarma told reporters here. Named after the first Chief Minister of Assam, Gopinath Bordoloi, the airport serves as a crucial gateway to the northeastern states of India and connects the region to major domestic and international destinations. It is managed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises, the flagship company of Adani Group. The passenger traffic at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI) in Guwahati increased 7.67 per cent to 6.57 million in the just-concluded financial year 2024-25, according to a statement from the airport on Wednesday. Works for a new airport terminal are at an advanced stage. Once inaugurated, it will significantly add to Guwahati Airport's existing capacity. Earlier today, Sarma also inaugurated the newly constructed Down Town Flyover, making it the 14th flyover in Guwahati. The flyover connects the Narangi area to Kurua. Meanwhile, while preparing for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, Sarma said that a 'new wave of welfare schemes' will be starting from August 16 and will go on till February. 'As we are starting a new wave of welfare schemes from August, which will continue until February, the results can be any number given the unprecedented welfare schemes that we are rolling out from August 16th. I can feel the vibes, the result will be unprecedented, and the NDA will be somewhere in the sky,' Sarma said. Earlier today, CM Sarma inaugurated 'Bodoland Speaks: From Vision to Action', an initiative of the Bodoland Territorial Council under the Bodoland Happiness Mission at a programme held at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati. CM Sarma, on the occasion, also conferred the Bodoland Lifetime Achievers Award on 18 personalities who contributed immensely to the enrichment of folk cultures in the BTR. The Chief Minister hailed the Bodoland Happiness Mission and said that the mission is an excellent effort to strengthen the peace and stability that the people of BTR achieved over the last five years. He said that the Bodoland Happiness Mission launched in the BTR has been hugely successful in forging happiness in the BTR areas. Giving a contrasting situation that has existed in the Bodoland areas since 1968, which witnessed violence, turmoil and more, CM Sarma said that the demand for self-determination of the Bodo people and the associated fear psychosis generated among the people belonging to other communities living in the areas made Bodoland one of the most disturbed areas. Assam CM inaugurates Bhagadatta Flyover-2 near Dispur, built in record 9 months

Guwahati (Assam) [India], July 6 (ANI): As a significant example of rapid infrastructural progress, the newly constructed flyover connecting Rukminigaon Road and Bormotoria Link Road at Downtown Point in Guwahati was inaugurated on Sunday by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Completed in just nine months - half the originally sanctioned period of eighteen months - this Rs. 112 crore, 660-metre-long, four-lane structure was officially designated as Bhagadatta Flyover-2 in honour of King Bhagadatta of Kamarupa. Additionally, the flyover located in the Super Market area of the city would henceforth be known as Bhagadatta Flyover-1. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Sarma stated that the new flyover forms part of the state government's broader initiative to improve Guwahati's urban transport infrastructure and alleviate persistent traffic congestion in the area. He highlighted that the entire construction team comprised young professionals from Assam and that the project represents only the second instance in the country of a flyover constructed using advanced composite structure technology by the Government of India's agency, RITES India Limited. He added that provisions have also been made for vehicle parking beneath the structure to support local commercial establishments. The Chief Minister noted that the current administration is committed to development rooted in both technological advancement and cultural heritage. The naming of the flyovers after King Bhagadatta, he explained, is intended to familiarise younger generations with the ancient legacy of Kamrup and Guwahati. He outlined several upcoming infrastructure initiatives, including a ramp addition to the Ganeshguri flyover, new flyovers at Arya Nagar, Maligaon, and Radha Govinda Baruah Road, and an elevated corridor at Bharalumukh. 'Flyovers at the Cycle Factory area and Bharalumukh are scheduled for inauguration in February next year, while the Noonmati-Chandmari flyover is expected to open by April. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to lay the foundation stone for the proposed Narengi-Kurua bridge and the Guwahati Ring Road in September. The bridge linking Guwahati and North Guwahati is set to be opened in January next year. Additionally, a new terminal building at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport would be inaugurated in November, alongside the commencement of an elevated corridor connecting the airport to Jalukbari, to be implemented by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways within the current year,' the Chief Minister said. CM Sarma stated that Guwahati is emerging as a major centre of employment, not only for Assam but for the broader North Eastern region. Livelihood opportunities for approximately 10 lakh individuals have been created in the city, reiterating the government's commitment to reducing outward migration for employment among the state's youth, he said. The Narengi-Kurua and Guwahati-North Guwahati bridges, he noted, are expected to expand the city's spatial footprint while simultaneously enhancing job availability. 'Several multinational firms have reportedly expressed interest in establishing call centres in Guwahati. In parallel, infrastructure development efforts are underway in other cities, including Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Tezpur, and Silchar. Two flyovers have already been completed in Dibrugarh and Jorhat, and a third project in Jorhat is scheduled to begin next year,' he said. The Chief Minister concluded by stating that Assam is progressing economically as a result of the present administration's development agenda, noting that the Reserve Bank of India recognised Assam last year as the third most economically progressive state in the country. At the event, he also felicitated the engineers and representatives of the construction agency responsible for Bhagadatta Flyover-2. (ANI)
