Punjab BJP chief seeks probe into Amritsar hooch tragedy, alleges AAP-liquor mafia nexus
Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], May 19 (ANI): Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar on Sunday submitted a memorandum to Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, demanding a probe into the Amritsar hooch tragedy and alleging links between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the liquor mafia in the state.
The memorandum described the Majitha incident, in which 27 people reportedly died after consuming spurious liquor, as a 'tragedy of mammoth human proportions.'
'The avoidable tragedy of mammoth human proportions - 27 human lives have perished - has taken place due to the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP regime's well-known intent to not only harbour elements of the liquor mafia but also to profit from their criminal misdeeds,' the memorandum stated.
The BJP pointed out that a similar incident occurred in March 2024 in Sangrur, the home district of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, suggesting a pattern of administrative failure.
Jakhar claimed the incident was preventable and alleged political patronage of illegal liquor networks by the ruling AAP government. He also urged the Governor to order a time-bound inquiry into the AAP's alleged ties with the liquor mafia and to investigate whether Punjab's excise system is being exploited for personal gains.
'The horrible incident and precious loss of lives in the Hooch Tragedy at Majitha in Amritsar district has shaken the conscience of every Punjabi. BJP Punjab leadership is appalled at the human magnitude of this AAP-made tragedy and has been constrained to write to you through this delegation, Sir, as you are the Custodian of our State, and to seek your personal attention in this matter with the request to order a time bound enquiry into AAP's links with liquor mafia and its patronage of the same with a motive to exploit Punjab's excise for their personal profit as illegal gratification,' he said.
The memorandum also drew parallels with the Delhi Excise Policy case, stating that top AAP leaders had been previously accused of alleged liquor-related irregularities.
He also criticised Chief Minister Mann's recent statement that 99 per cent of villages in Punjab are free of drugs, questioning whether the spurious liquor crisis was being overlooked in such claims.
'The instant tragedy ironically has taken place while the AAP Government under Chief Minister Bhagwan Mann aggressively proclaims from every political rooftop a victory against the menace of drug abuse. The Chief Minister, only a day before yesterday, once again exhibited grave insensitivity and declared that 99% of Punjab villages are free of the drug menace! May be the present Hooch tragedy forced CM to stay short of that perfect 100% drug-free claim. Or maybe the Chief Minister himself and his government do not count spurious liquor menace equally deadly like abuse of drugs,' Jakhar said in his memorandum.
He also raised concerns over reported methanol poisoning symptoms among the victims and said that the incident had occurred during heightened border security, raising questions about the state police's functioning.
He appealed to the Governor to order time-bound action to 'ascertain the truth for every Punjabi' and ensure accountability. (ANI)

To this, 83.38% of the respondents said 'Yes" and only 16.62% chose 'No". The poll was conducted over two days, May 6 and May 7, 2025, using state-of-the-art software. It was held on News18's websites and social media platforms, and also via television channels using QR codes. A total of 14,671 responses were collected. Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently reignited the debate over the Indus Waters Treaty, criticising Jawaharlal Nehru for allocating 80% of the Indus basin water flow to Pakistan under the 1960 agreement. 'This is a historic decision; the Indus Waters Treaty has been cancelled. This is not an ordinary incident. When the Indus Waters Treaty was signed, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the Prime Minister; he gave 80% of the water to Pakistan. Not only was water given, along with water, 83 crore rupees were also given, which is currently worth 5 thousand 500 crore rupees. By depriving our own farmers, we are giving water to those who are responsible for breeding terrorists," he added. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has also criticised Nehru for signing the treaty and referred to it as the 'greatest strategic blunder in India's history". Taking to X, he wrote, 'Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's signing of the Indus Waters Treaty in 1960 stands as one of the greatest strategic blunders in India's history. Despite India's natural upper riparian advantage, Nehru, under immense pressure from the then-American administration and the World Bank, handed away over 80% of the Indus basin waters to Pakistan—gifting full control over the mighty Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab rivers, while restricting India to the smaller eastern rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej)." India and Pakistan signed the Indus Waters Treaty in 1960, with the World Bank as an additional signatory. The pact sought to divide the water of the Indus river and its tributaries equitably between the two countries. Under the treaty, water from three eastern rivers—Beas, Ravi, and Sutlej—was allocated to India, and that from the three western rivers—Chenab, Indus, and Jhelum—to Pakistan. The treaty also permitted both nations to use the other's rivers for certain purposes, such as small hydroelectric projects that require little or no water storage.

Anubrata Mondal audio tape: NCW seeks action-taken report from Bengal DGP Rajeev Kumar within 72 hours
The National Commission for Women (NCW) Thursday wrote to West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Kumar regarding the purported verbal abuse of a cop in Birbhum by Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Anubrata Mondal. According to the letter sent by Archana Majumdar, a member of the NCW, 'The National Commission for Women expresses deep concern over the apparent inaction by the state police in this matter, despite clear and widespread public outrage. This inaction not only emboldens such repeat offenders but also deeply undermines the morale of the police force and shakes public confidence in the neutrality and responsiveness of law enforcement agencies. You are aware that Mr Mondal has a long and well-documented history of intimidation, criminal conduct, and corruption, including arrest and custody by the CBI in previous cases.' Majumdar told media persons that 'the NCW has sought an action-taken report in the matter,' adding that 'if the wife and mother of the police officer face such a situation, then what is the condition of common citizens of the State.' The Commission has asked DGP Rajeev Kumar to submit the report within 72 hours from the time of receipt of the letter. After the audio of the telephone conversation went viral, sources said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has also started a fresh probe to find out whether any witness in the cattle-smuggling case had been similarly intimidated either by Mondal or any of his associates to change their statements. Reacting to the NCW notice, TMC spokesperson Joy Prakash Majumdar said, 'The NCW now is being used for political purposes, and it is sad that they have lost their independence and impartiality. In BJP-ruled states, there are reports of enormous misconduct against women… the NCW never utters a word or interferes in such states. On the other hand, in places like West Bengal, they make political statements for the benefit of the BJP.' A week after the audio conversation between Mondal and the police officer went viral, Mondal appeared before the sub-divisional police officer recently and recorded his statement. The TMC condemned Mondal's remarks and sought an apology from him, which he promptly complied with. Meanwhile, Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has announced that a 'Nari Samman Yatra' will be held in Bolpur on June 9. Speaking on the viral audio tape, Adhikari said, 'Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had taught Mondal what to say in the police station. After Bolpur's rally on June 9, the same yatra will take place in Nadia. I am expecting at least 10,000 people to attend the rally.' Mondal was arrested in August 2022 by the CBI in connection with the multi-crore cattle-smuggling case in West Bengal. Later, he was also arrested by the Enforcement Directorate. After spending over two years in Tihar Jail in New Delhi, Mondal was released on bail recently, following which he returned to his house in Bolpur under Birbhum district.

During a Mahila Samwad programme in Gaya, Ms Paswan told Rahul Gandhi that he had inspired her to join politics. She then added that just like him, she will never get married. In a video, shared on X (formerly Twitter), Ms Paswan, who lives in a slum area, said she owed her progress in life to the Shakti Abhiyan, an initiative by the Congress to increase women participation in politics. Ms Paswan explained that politics is the first step to improve different sectors, such as education, but many people do not join the field, especially women. 'We have a very big team in the slum areas. We made this during the Shakti Abhiyan itself. We try to solve the small problems of the people. Now it has become such that if people have any problem, they come to us,' she added. Impressed by her confidence, Rahul Gandhi replied, 'You give good speeches.' An excited Riya Paswan added, 'Like you, I am also thinking of never getting married,' prompting laughter from the audience. She continued, 'I want to become a leader and work for the public. I want to join politics because when I entered the Shakti Abhiyan, I realised what politics actually is.' Riya Paswan gained fame in 2022 when she questioned a bureaucrat, IAS officer Harjot Kaur Bhamra, about providing free sanitary pads. Rahul Gandhi was on a one-day trip to Bihar on June 6, ahead of the Assembly elections, which are expected to be held in November. He criticised the JDU and BJP-led state government during his tour of the poll-bound state. While addressing a gathering in Rajgir's Nalanda, chief minister Nitish Kumar's home district, the Congress leader accused the JDU-BJP alliance of turning Bihar from the 'land of knowledge' to the country's 'crime capital'.
