Coronation Street's Mick star breaks silence as killer returns to cobbles
Coronation Street's Joe Layton has responded to the flood of messages he's received following his dramatic comeback to the cobbles, providing a lift amid news of his impending departure. Viewers of the ITV soap were under the impression that his character, Mick Michaelis, was securely locked up after being arrested for the savage murder of PC Craig Tinker back in May.
However, during Monday's (July 14) episode of Corrie, the killer was seen making a daring escape from Weatherfield Prison in an attempt to reunite with his family, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Mick was spotted crawling under a laundry van before later emerging onto the street, having been tipped off by Brody that Joanie was at Weatherfield High.
When Brody, who is helping him escape, informs Mick - who has crawled under a laundry van before later appearing on the street - he shows up at the school.
But Sally Metcalfe has already collected Joanie after the young girl is distressed by her peers' remarks about her parents, with Lou now also incarcerated for her assault on Gary Windass.
Daniel Osbourne and Mrs Crawshaw are then taken aback when they come face to face with Mick, who insists they hand over Joanie. Upon learning that Joanie has left, Mick locks the pair in the office and makes a run for it.
He soon heads for the street, where Sally is introducing Joanie to Underworld. With Kit now aware of Mick's escape, he's also on the chase and spots him heading towards the factory.
Bursting into the factory to rescue Joanie, Mick took Tim and Sarah Platt hostage in the office. Kit was hot on his heels, and tensions soared as Mick realised that Joanie had been sneaked onto the roof by Sally in a desperate escape attempt.
Sally could be seen attempting to soothe the young girl as pandemonium broke out below them, with Mick wounding Kit and leaving him in a critical condition as he pursued his quarry to the rooftop, where a terrified yet resolute Sally faced him down.
In her final stand against Mick, Sally vowed to take care of Joanie and Shanice, promising them a brighter future, just as Mick surrendered to the police.
Social media was abuzz with reactions, with heaps of praise being lavished on Joe's portrayal of Mick.
Taking to his own social platforms, Joe expressed his gratitude for an Inside Soap Awards nomination and encouraged fans to vote, posting: "Very grateful for this nomination and all the kind messages you've sent about Mick the ******. Vote all thinks @coronation street," along with a link to the 2025 voting page for the awards ceremony.
Joe's six-month tenure as Mick has earned him a nomination for Best Villain at the coveted awards.
Competing for the title are Corrie's Claire Sweeney (Cassie Plummer) and EastEnders' Jonny Freeman (Reiss Colwell) and Navin Chowdhry (Nish Panesar).
Also included in the category are Emmerdale's Ned Porteous (Joe Tate) and Oliver Farnworth (John Sugden), alongside Hollyoaks' Gemma Bissix (Clare Devine) and Jeremy Sheffield (Jeremy Blake).

Beloved ITV detective show slapped with 'trigger warning' for crime scenes in 'woke' move
ITV 's Inspector Morse has been slapped with a 'trigger warning' in a move that has been branded ' woke '. The popular series now features a pre-warning for crime scenes throughout the show, which seems to have caused a stir with people online. The streaming giant also advises there are 'satanic images' in one episode of the drama. It then has a parental lock on the episode, titled Day of the Devil. Inspector Morse first aired from 1987 to 2000, with a total of eight series. Other episodes also feature a warning over crime and violence. The popular series now features a pre-warning for crime scenes throughout the show, which seems to have caused a stir with people online Speaking about the update, Senior MP Sir Alec Shelbrooke slammed: 'This is another example of soft-touch Britain seeping into everything. 'We're just going to be laughed at as a country if things like this continue, because nobody's prepared for the real world where there are no.' Daily Mail has contacted ITV for comment. In the past, it has said about general alerts: 'Programming that contains politically sensitive or distressing themes, content, or language has carried appropriate warnings since our launch.' Just a few weeks ago, Netflix bosses axed an iconic moment from Pride and Prejudice to avoid 'objectifying men'. The unforgettable scene of Mr Darcy - played by Colin Firth - emerging from a lake was all the rage in 1995. But show bosses have confirmed it will not resurface in the forthcoming version of the rom-com. According to reports, many fans will be disappointed as the famous BBC scene is said to have 'got millions of women hot under the collar'. A source told The Sun: 'It is also credited for sparking subsequent moments of male objectification on screen - likes Aidan Turner's famous topless scything scene in Poldark.' It's claimed that Netflix bosses 'don't want a repeat'. The saucy scene soon became one of the most favourite TV scenes, however it didn't actually feature in Jane Austen's original 1813 story. Arguably the most iconic wet shirt ever worn sold at auction for £25,000 - double its estimated sale price.

They share their strong feelings for one another and, later on in the episode, Harry chooses to recouple with Shakira, leaving Helena and Blu to coupe up. Just a short time later, Harry and Shakira have been seen getting very close in a preview clip played on Love Island's After Sun. Maya played the clip to the panellist and audience members, all of which audibly gasped as they watched Harry snuggle into Shakira and kiss her neck. The 22-year-old could be seen sat on Harry's lap, as the footballer cradled her in the girls' dressing room. She told him they'd be taking "baby steps" as he nestled into her neck after getting their relationship back on track. Eyeing up her lips, Harry leans in to snog Shakira, but she quickly turns away, allowing him to kiss her cheek instead. Earlier in the episode, Harry tells her: 'I have really tried with her [Helena], but we [Shakira and I] had like a week and it was, for me, the feelings were obviously way stronger and still are. "I'm sorry I never like tried again. I really thought the door was just, like, slammed.' Harry and Helena break down in tears as they cut final romantic ties in emotional scenes Shakira responds: 'Do you want some home truths… it's obviously the way you go about it and the steps you take in between to come to these conclusions obviously hurt people along the way. "It's all well and good you saying 'hold my hands up guys, sorry' but you still hurt people. And it's a pattern.' Harry then makes his intentions clear, saying: 'Look, I'm either leaving here alone or with you.' Both Harry and Helena broke down in tears multiple times in Sunday night's episode, as they cut their final romantic ties in emotional scenes. The duo have continued to deal with the fallout from The Grafties on the long-running ITV2 show. Helena told Harry: "You're so selfish, you've literally broken my heart Harry. Like I cannot be your friend in here. "And I will not be your friend on the outside, I can f****** promise you that. I don't want any association with you ever again." When he suggested that the duo may eventually become friends on the outside, she shut him down once again. "I don't think we will be friends Harry. You don't possess any morals or values that I look for when I'm becoming friends with people. "My friends don't treat me like that. I don't think you have an ounce of respect for me, you've literally ruined everything for me in here." She added: "I literally don't want anything to do with you Harry." That's when the footballers couldn't help but tear up after listening to her resounding words of rejection. Helena added: "I feel like I had something genuine in here and it's like obviously it wasn't. "I just feel so stupid because you clearly haven't felt the same as I felt about you this whole time." She couldn't help but wrap her arms around his neck in a gesture of pity as she caressed his face one more time. As they let go she exclaimed: "It's where the journey ends my darling!" 5 The pair were seen gazing at each other in a sneak preview Credit: ITV
