People power forced Congress to restore democracy: PM Modi

Time of India12 hours ago

New Delhi: In a series of posts on X on the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi 50 years ago, PM Modi said, "The 42nd Amendment is a prime example of their shenanigans. The poor, marginalised and downtrodden were particularly targeted, including their dignity insulted.
"
The PM recalled how the Congress govt, which was then in office, sought to change the Constitution. Some of the amendments, which were undone by the Janata Party govt that took office in 1977, included the suspension of fundamental rights, curtailing the powers of courts and changing the Preamble.
Modi's reference to "dignity of the poor" was seemingly a reminder of the forced sterilisations.
"We salute every person who stood firm in the fight against the Emergency.
These were the people from all over India, from all walks of life, from diverse ideologies who worked closely with each other with one aim: to protect India's democratic fabric and to preserve the ideals for which our freedom fighters devoted their lives," Modi said.
He said it was people's collective struggle that ensured that "the then Congress govt had to restore democracy and call for fresh elections, which they lost badly".

"May we scale new heights of progress and fulfil the dreams of the poor and downtrodden," he added.
The PM also mentioned the release of the book 'Emergency Diaries' chronicling his journey during those years and called upon all those who remember those dark days or those whose families suffered during that time to share their experiences on social media.
"It will create awareness among the youth of the shameful time from 1975 to 1977," the PM said, recalling his days as a young RSS pracharak when Emergency was imposed.
"The anti-Emergency movement was a learning experience for me. It reaffirmed the vitality of preserving our democratic framework. At the same time, I got to learn so much from people across the political spectrum," he said, expressing happiness that some of those experiences had been compiled in the form of a book, whose foreword has been penned by former PM H D Deve Gowda.

‘Not tenable': ECI sources on Congress seeking digital copy of Maharashtra voters' list

A day after the Congress urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to provide machine-readable digital copy of the Maharashtra voters' list, ECI sources on Thursday (June 26, 2025) said the demand is "not tenable" under the prevailing legal framework, asserting that a similar plea of the party was junked by the Supreme Court in 2019. The ECI sources said while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been demanding for machine-readable, digital copy of the electoral roll for the last seven months, such demand by the Congress is "not new". 'Rather, it forms part of a strategy by the political party for well over eight years, a fact that appears to have been selectively obscured in the present representation,' an ECI source pointed out. The ECI sources said the demand reiterated by Mr. Gandhi, albeit consistent with the position historically maintained by the Congress, is "not tenable within the contours of the prevailing legal framework". They pointed out that the issue was already agitated by the Congress before the Supreme Court in a writ petition in 2018 filed by Kamal Nath, the then president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee. It appears that Mr. Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, may not have been appropriately apprised of the finality with which the matter stands concluded in judicial record, they said. Referring to the Supreme Court's verdict in Kamal Nath vs Election Commission of India, (2019), the sources said that top court had observed that it found force in the submission of ECI. Clause 11.2.2.2 of the Election Manual uses the expression "text mode". The draft electoral roll in text mode has been supplied to the petitioner, the apex court had said. 'The clause nowhere says that the draft electoral roll has to be put up on the Chief Electoral Officer's website in a 'searchable PDF'. Therefore, the petitioner cannot claim, as a right, that the draft electoral roll should be placed on the website in a 'searchable mode'. It has only to be in 'text mode' and it is so provided,' the apex court had observed. The Congress on Wednesday (June 25, 2025) urged the ECI to provide machine-readable digital copy of the Maharashtra voters' list along with video footage of polling day of the state and Haryana within a week. The Congress and Mr. Gandhi have consistently accused the poll authority of fudging voter data to help the BJP. Mr. Gandhi has alleged that the Maharashtra Assembly polls held last year were rigged. The poll authority has denied the allegations, saying elections are strictly held under electoral laws passed by Parliament.

James Carville warns Zohran Mamdani's NYC victory spells trouble for Democrats in US

When Zohran Mamdani beat former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic mayoral primary, it shocked New York. James Carville , a veteran strategist, warns that this win could have long-term effects on Democrats across the country. Party insiders are worried about the rising star's far-left policies and controversial slogans. Why is James Carville worried about Zohran Mamdani? Veteran strategist James Carville issued a warning about how the Democratic Party might suffer if democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, the Ugandan-born New York State Assemblyman from Queens, wins the mayoral primary in New York City. In the race to become the Democratic Party's nominee for mayor of New York City, Mamdani has come under fire from Republicans and some Democrats who say he is a negative indicator of America's political future. On his podcast, he discussed Mamdani's unexpected win and cautioned that it could be another setback for the faltering Democrats, as per a report by Fox News. Live Events Will this upset impact Democrats nationwide? The veteran strategist thinks that Mamdani's leftist policies, like " globalize the intifada " and grocery stores run by the government, will turn off moderate voters and give the GOP more power. "Global infitada" is something that Mamdani "has not walked back" from, the strategist said. Carville was referring to Mamdani's refusal to denounce the slogan "Globalize the intifada," which Israel's opponents use as a call to fight oppression and pro-Israeli supporters claim is a call for violence. "Maybe he'll turn out to be a very skilled candidate that can skillfully navigate some of what I refer to as 'esoteric' positions," Carville said, seemingly referring to Mamdani's confusing policy of government-run grocery stores . Carville stated, "There's a lot of baseball left here," in reference to the mayoral race. "We've got a lot of baseball left to play." Given that many of its most famous mayors failed to reflect a broader political movement outside of their city, Hunt contended that New York City is not a good representative of America as a whole. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., made a comment in which she warned that Mamdani was a "radical, Defund-the-Police, Communist, raging Antisemite." He then seemed to be referring to that statement. Zohran Mamdani's communist affiliation was refuted by Hunt, who asserted that "he does have some issues that the Republicans will love to talk about." Opposition to Mamdani will "keep unearthing stuff" from his past, Carville warned. He would need to give an umbrella answer for all of this. FAQs Why is James Carville concerned about Mamdani? He fears Mamdani's far-left policies will harm Democrats nationwide. What was Zohran Mamdani criticised for? He used the slogan "globalize the intifada" and proposed a government-run grocery store.
