Minneapolis police given warning after dozens of vehicles broken into over 3-day span
The Minneapolis Police Department says the break-ins happened overnight on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in the First and Second precincts.
The following areas were affected by break-ins, according to Minneapolis police:
Police say if your vehicle was damaged or broken into recently to report it immediately by either calling 911 or 311. Reports can also be made in person at your nearest precinct or online.
Anyone who lives in one of the areas where the break-ins occurred is encouraged to check any security cameras or doorbell cameras that may have captured the incidents. If you find footage that may be related, police say to call 911 or 311, or to go to your nearest precinct to provide the footage to investigators.
To prevent vehicle damage and break-ins, police say to report suspicious activity near vehicles to 911 immediately and to provide a description of individuals, including any license plates of any vehicles involved, and the direction of travel of those involved.
People are encouraged to park in well-lit and busy areas, to always take their keys with them and to hide or take valuables with them, such as phones, bags or electronics.

Seattle detectives investigate brutal attack at local grocery store
A 64-year-old man was arrested Sunday afternoon after a stabbing inside a Rainier Valley Safeway left another man with life-threatening injuries, according to Seattle police. Officers responded to a report of a stabbing around 4 p.m. in the 3800 block of Rainier Avenue South. When they arrived, they found the victim inside the grocery store with multiple stab wounds and heavy bleeding. Seattle Fire Department personnel provided emergency aid at the scene before transporting the victim to Harborview Medical Center. He was listed in serious condition with injuries described as life-threatening. Police said the suspect was located and arrested within minutes. Officers also recovered the knife believed to have been used in the attack. After reviewing surveillance video, investigators said the suspect appeared to approach the victim inside the store and stab him without warning. Detectives with the department's Homicide and Assault Unit are now leading the investigation. Police have not released the identities of those involved, and the motive for the attack remains unclear.

Execution date set for Florida man convicted of kidnapping woman, killing her
A man on death row in Florida is scheduled to be executed next month for his conviction of abducting a woman from an insurance office and killing her. Kayle Bates, 67, is set to be put to death on Aug. 19 in the 10th execution scheduled for this year in Florida. Bates was convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping, armed robbery and attempted sexual battery in connection with the June 14, 1982, death of 24-year-old Janet White in Bay County. He was accused of abducting White from the State Farm insurance office where she worked before taking her into the woods behind the building, at which point he attempted to rape her, stabbed her to death, and tore a diamond ring from one of her fingers, according to Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier's summary of the case. According to court records, Bates was a delivery man for a Tallahassee paper company and had made at least one earlier delivery stop at the insurance office. He had broken into the insurance office while White was on her lunch break and waited for her to return. Last year, the Florida Supreme Court rejected an appeal regarding a juror from his initial trial. The U.S. Supreme Court also denied a petition on June 30. Bates' attorney, James Driscoll Jr., said he would be filing further appeals in the case. "We believe his execution would violate the U.S. constitution," he told The Associated Press. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Bates' death warrant on Friday, just three days after the state executed Michael Bell for shooting and killing two people outside a bar in 1993 as part of an attempted revenge killing. Bell was the eighth person executed in Florida this year, and a ninth is scheduled for later this month. The state put six people to death in 2023, but only one execution happened last year. Bell was the 26th person to be executed in the U.S. so far this year in the U.S., exceeding the 25 executions carried out last year. This is the highest number of executions since 2015, when 28 people across the country were put to death.

Brother of former NFL player and Army Ranger Pat Tillman reportedly drove car into San Jose post office, officials say
A man accused of deliberately driving a vehicle into a Northern California post office is reportedly the brother of former NFL player and US Army ranger Pat Tillman, the US Postal Inspection Service said. The investigation began when police and firefighters in San Jose responded to reports of a burning vehicle in the box lobby area of the Almaden Valley Station Post Office about 3 a.m. Sunday, the USPIS said in a statement emailed to CNN. The fire was extinguished and police took a man into custody, the statement said. 'The person in police custody is named Richard Tillman, who is reported to be the brother of the late NFL player and US Army soldier Patrick Tillman,' the service said. The suspect told officers at the scene he is Pat Tillman's brother and said he live-streamed the crash on a social media platform, KNTV in San Francisco reported, citing a source with knowledge of the investigation. 'Postal inspectors are investigating the incident as a potentially intentional act,' USPIS said. Richard Tillman is being held without bond and is due to appear in court Wednesday, according to Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office booking information. Pat Tillman, who led his high school football team in San Jose to a championship before playing at Arizona State University and advancing to the NFL, was killed while serving as a US Ranger in Afghanistan in 2004. The former Arizona Cardinals player – who turned down a multimillion-dollar contract with the team to enlist with the US Army following the September 11 attacks – was shot in the head three times by US soldiers who mistook him for the enemy. In a post on X Sunday, the San Jose Fire Department said about 50 personnel attended the scene of the post office fire, with no injuries reported.
