They also pleaded not guilty to other charges of torture and rape committed against civilians.But a number of human rights groups, including Amnesty International, say the charge sheet "omits senior officers who held overall command responsibility during the operations that saw the deaths, rape and injuries of no less than 60 Kenyans".They have also expressed concern over the prosecutors' office move to name the victims and witnesses which it said could expose them to harm and reprisals.Baby Pendo - as she became known - died after being hit on the head, which caused a national outrage and became a symbol of the police brutality during the 2017 unrest.The public prosecutor at the time initiated a public inquest.After the inquest found the police culpable, the prosecutor ordered further investigations into other cases resulting from the police operation.But none of the accused had until now entered a plea amid repeated delays in court, which sparked calls for justice and accountability.Baby Pendo's mum, Lensa Achieng, has told the BBC that she is hopeful for justice and is pleased that "we have a case now".She said the journey had not been easy "but as the family of Baby Pendo at least we are going somewhere... they are taking a bold step to take the case to another level."It's just our prayer for us to find justice for our daughter so that whatever happened to us does not happen to another parent."Rights groups have continued to criticise the delays, blaming numerous attempts to defer or stall court proceedings.They say the charges were amended without the involvement of the investigating agency, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa). Ipoa has said it does not know the rationale used by the prosecutor.There has been little movement since a new prosecutor took over in 2023, and this year the head of Amnesty Kenya, Irungu Houghton, told the BBC that there seemed to be "an unwillingness to try to prosecute this case".Amnesty and other rights groups are now calling on the judiciary to ensure the cases against the four officers are not delayed.Additional reporting by Gladys Kigo

Fourth arrest after taxi smashes into Banbury house
A woman has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after a vehicle hit a taxi that then smashed into a Avenue in Banbury was closed by police on Monday after the house and taxi were damaged at about 03:30 BST. It has since reopened and the force said no injuries were Valley Police said the 58-year-old woman was also from Banbury, as are the three male suspects aged 59, 19 and force said all four had been released on conditional police bail, with bail dates on 3 and 4 November. Edwards, 64, was seen in public for the first time in six months earlier this week carrying bottles of prosecco to his car in Swansea.. Six months on the ex-BBC presenter was seen with a new short white stubbly beard and glasses with a thick black frame as he walked back to his car in Swansea. Convicted sex offender Edwards was dressed in a light blue polo shirt, a dark navy blue jacket with large pockets and button-up detailing and a pair of navy trousers with a black belt. He was photographed holding onto three small bottles of prosecco, a baseball cap and a receipt on his 64th birthday earlier this week, according to the Mirror. Earlier this week reports surfaced that Edwards has upset staff by failing to repay his £200,000 salary despite demands for him to do so. Last year bosses said that they had formally asked the former presenter to return the wages he received following his arrest. After Edwards' arrest in 2023 the BBC continued to pay him until his resignation in 2024. The BBC maintained that they were insisting on Edwards returning his salary for that period, but according to the Mirror he has yet to do so. The TV star suffered a huge fall from grace in 2023 after reports emerged that a high-profile, unnamed BBC presenter paid tens of thousands of pounds for explicit photos. A mother claimed this went on from 2020, when their child was 17, for three years, and funded their child's drug habit. He was suspended from the BBC at the time. He was subsequently suspended from the BBC. Later, Edwards was identified by his wife Vicky Flind in a statement where she revealed he had been "suffering from serious mental health issues" and was undergoing in-patient treatment. Later that year, Edwards was arrested and his mobile phone was confiscated during an unrelated investigation which exposed his involvement in WhatsApp conversations with Alex Williams. He later admitted to creating indecent images of children and received a six-month prison sentence suspended for two years along with an order to complete a sex offender programme. BBC failed to claw back salary Our pictures come after we told on Monday how BBC were furious that bosses had failed to claw back any of the £200,000 Edwards' post-arrest salary. The BBC said - after a Sun Freedom of Information probe: "Huw Edwards has not returned any money paid to him by the BBC after his arrest, in respect of any of his work. "The BBC has asked for all the money paid to Huw Edwards by the BBC for the period November 2023 (arrest) and April 2024 (resignation) to be returned." Edwards - once the BBC's star news anchor who fronted coverage of elections and state events including the Queen's funeral - was allowed to step down on medical grounds. The shamed star - spared jail by Westminster Magistrates last September over child abuse images - was last pictured wearing a quilted jacket and puffing on a vape in Wales. Those pictures came as The Sun revealed the BBC was struggling to recoup money from their former star man. The ex-newsreader - paid £475,000 per year by the BBC - was arrested in November 2023 over the most serious category of child abuse images shared in a Whats App chat. But he was not sacked by the Beeb although some senior staff knew he had been nicked. Paedo's pattern of behaviour By Scarlet Howes NIGHT after night he sternly delivered the most important news to the nation, with his authoritative style winning countless awards. But away from his famous desk, as we have discovered, Huw Edwards was a manipulative paedophile who used the same pattern of behaviour time and time again to feed his relentless desires. Edwards appeared in court last summer to learn his fate, his once glittering career in ruins. Our exclusive that he paid a youngster thousands of pounds for sexual pictures made headlines around the globe and set into motion a series of events which plunged the BBC into crisis. And Edwards - at the time the BBC's highest earning newsreader - never again appeared on our screens. The court heard Edwards paid a younger convicted paedophile £1,500 for child sex images and videos of children which he described as "amazing". The case centred on messages between sex offender Alex Williams, who was a teen when they struck up a relationship, and 63-year-old Edwards. We must be clear, the facts of that case are unrelated to our original story. But there are some alarming similarities in his exchanges with both young people - and a pattern of deeply disturbing behaviour. He made contact with both on social media, messaged them on WhatsApp, harassed them for pictures, and then gave them money. There were kisses involved and Christmas presents given. Chillingly, he even bought both of them, who are decades younger, a pair of trainers. And all in exchange for sexual pictures. Cash was used as leverage to the men, one homeless, the other a student, who could only dream of earning his top salary. What The Sun uncovered was a pattern of behaviour and had we not done so Edwards' could well have remained undetected. Welshman Edwards – who had been revealed as paying a young man £35,000 for sex pictures after a separate Sun investigation – was instead allowed to step down from the BBC on "medical grounds" in April 2024. We then revealed last July he had been charged with making indecent images. Edwards was charged with three counts of making indecent images of children between December 2020 and April 2022. The charges were not made public until they were revealed by The Sun. He admitted the three counts in July – and then avoided jail when he was sentenced last September. The court heard he paid money to young paedophile Alex Williams for obscene material. He described a batch of depraved paedophile videos as 'amazing' – and replied 'go on' when offered pictures and videos of a boy later estimated to be aged between seven and nine. Seven of the 41 images sent by Williams were of the worst Category A level. But Edwards was handed a suspended six-month jail sentence and ordered to undergo a sex treatment programme and rehabilitation sessions. He was also placed on the sex offenders register. The Sun has campaigned for paedophiles who hoard serious child abuse images to face automatic jail.
