Mental-health lessons in schools sound like a great idea. The trouble is, they don't work

It's Saturday afternoon and my friend's five-year-old daughter is lying next to me on her living room floor. She explains to me that she does this at school. She lies on her back with the rest of the class and they do something called the body scanner, where they all pay attention to various body parts in turn. I know she is describing a mindfulness exercise, because I'm a psychologist who researches mental-health lessons. I listen as she explains it all to me, but in my head I'm thinking something else: she shouldn't be learning mindfulness at school.
On the face of it, mental-health lessons in schools seemed like an excellent idea. Young people's mental health is worse now than it was in the past, and one-to-one treatment is hard to access. If you teach young people about mental health at school – which often includes teaching techniques based on therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or mindfulness – it's more accessible. If you teach these concepts to everyone in a class – so-called universal interventions – you avoid missing the under-the-radar kids who aren't seeking help, and avoid the potential stigma of singling anyone out. If you teach the information when pupils are young enough, even better: you might prevent mental-health problems from starting in the first place.
At least, that was the idea. The reality is more sobering. Researchers have now run many studies testing the impact of universal school mental-health interventions and have found that they don't really improve mental health. When improvements are found, they're small – a tiny average shift on a symptom questionnaire – and the quality of the research is often poor, meaning it's hard to trust the findings. The best-designed studies show that interventions don't work at all: no improvement in mental health symptoms, either immediately after the course of lessons or later down the line.
In fact, some studies have found that universal mental-health lessons actually make things worse. There are now high-quality studies showing that school lessons based on CBT, mindfulness, dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT) and general mental-health awareness lead to a small increase in symptoms of mental-health difficulties. There is evidence of other bad outcomes too, such as decreased prosocial behaviour or decreased relationship quality with parents.
It is not every study, but it is enough that we should take this seriously – not least because all schools in England are now required to teach something about mental health. And these are the ones that have been tested: there are many, many interventions being sold to and taught in schools that haven't been evaluated at all.
I have now reached the conclusion that we should stop these all-class mental-health lessons. My view is that the only information we should teach en masse is where a young person should get help, both inside and outside school, if they're struggling. That's it. Then we should focus the time, energy and money on supporting the smaller group of young people who are actually unwell.
I have not come to this conclusion lightly. Like so many others, I was once enthusiastic about the potential of the universal approach. It is a logical, intuitive idea that mental-health lessons in schools are a good idea, an obvious solution to an obvious need. But once you can accept the evidence, something surprising happens. It starts to become clear why all-class mental-health lessons don't improve young people's mental health, and why they were never going to.
In any one classroom, young people vary enormously. For starters, the majority of them do not have mental-health problems. This means some pupils are being asked to engage in effortful practices at home – mindfulness meditation, CBT-based thinking exercises – when they are not struggling in the first place. When you ask them in qualitative studies, where they can convey openly what they think, some young people say such lessons are irrelevant to them, and they are right. Proponents of these lessons would say that the exercises are still worth learning, that positive effects may appear later down the line – but this is not supported by the evidence.
At the other extreme, in every class there will be students who already have significant mental-health problems, and thus will need more than what is on offer in universal lessons. They will need focused one-to-one support: therapy tailored to their specific challenges, built on a meaningful, trusting relationship with a qualified adult. Others will need changes in their external circumstances, not guidance about how to cope better in their own minds. For these students, mental-health lessons will be far too light touch, like being given plasters and paracetamol when they have a broken leg.
Other students say that these lessons make them focus on negative feelings and memories, which then upsets them. Others simply do not understand what they are being taught, and find the exercises confusing and stressful. We have very little understanding about how specific groups – such as neurodivergent children or those with language difficulties – experience these all-class lessons and whether they are able to correctly implement what they are being told to do.
Another problem is that the classroom may not be the right setting to learn about mental health. Some young people feel socially secure at school and have good friends, but others are lonely or bullied. Many young people do not feel safe at school. In one study, several students said they didn't want to do mindfulness meditation at school because they didn't trust what their peers would do to them if they shut their eyes. Hearing this, it suddenly seemed obvious: without resolving these social challenges, the classroom is just not the right environment for a young person to do vulnerable work on their mental health.
Importantly, this doesn't mean there should be no mental-health support in schools. School is a logical, equitable place to provide help, and there is evidence that one-to-one and small-group support in schools, given to those who need or want it, can work well, at least in the short term. But when it comes to all-class lessons, we should listen to the evidence, and to young people themselves. We came up with a good idea, we spent a lot of time and money testing it, and we have our answer. Given the evidence, we should now stop doing those lessons.
The people running this research, and those making decisions to teach these lessons in schools, really want a solution to this crisis. We all want to figure out what to tell young people about mental health, and how to best help them when they are struggling. Against a backdrop of ever rising mental-health problems, and lack of affordable alternatives, I completely understand why it feels wrong – unethical even – to call a halt to these lessons.
Yet it is also unethical to ignore evidence, and to continue delivering something that doesn't work. At best, the universal lessons we have are a waste of time; at worst, they are harmful. The numbers tell us these lessons don't improve mental health. The qualitative data tells us that many young people don't like or want them. We need to listen.

His drug problems also meant Rihanna's mom had to work overtime to provide for her family, forcing Rihanna to step up and take care of her two younger brothers when she was little. Her yearning for a better life and longing for an escape from her 'abusive' dad were likely a driving force in her launching her music career at only 15 years old. But her relationship with her dad didn't get any easier after she found fame, in fact, things only got more messy as their problems often trickled into the media. Over the years, Rihanna and her father have gotten into multiple public feuds: he once got kicked off her tour after he 'embarrassed her' by 'disrespected' crew members; she was left furious when he spoke publicly about her controversial romance with Chris Brown; and he was kicked out of her charity event for boozing soon after he completed a rehab stint she had funded. Things got so bad in 2019 she actually sued Ronald for allegedly trying to cash in on her fame by using their family name to brand his entertainment business. But in recent years it had seemed as though they had finally reconciled as Ronald revealed in 2022 after Rihanna announced her pregnancy that they had been in touch and that he was 'over the moon' over the news. It's certainly been a rollercoaster ride for Rihanna and her father. Amid the news of his shock passing, FEMAIL has recapped their tumultuous relationship from start to finish. Rihanna's childhood was plagued by Ronald's drug addiction, as well as and his violent fights with her mom Rihanna, who grew up in Barbados, has long been open about how her father's addictions to crack and alcohol cast a dark shadow over her childhood. 'Even as a toddler, I learned that my mom and dad would argue when there was foil paper in the ashtray,' she once recalled to the Mirror. It was said that her dad's substance abuse issues lead to explosive fights between her parents that sometimes turned physical. 'I could tell when a conversation was getting too intense, when it was going to get physical,' she told Rolling Stone back in 2011. 'And Fridays would be scary because he would come home drunk. He'd get paid, and half of it would go toward alcohol. He'd walk in the door, and it was all eyes on him.' She also revealed that her dad hit her once when she was seven years old after she asked to stay at the beach 10 more minutes. 'He slapped me so hard. I ran home with his handprint on me,' she recalled. 'I couldn't believe it. 'My mother saw my face, how traumatized I was ... [it] was out of nowhere.' In addition, she told ABC, '[My parents] had a very abusive relationship. My dad was the abuser. [He hit her] on numerous account.' Her mom, Monica, worked tirelessly to try to provide for Rihanna and her two brothers, which sometimes meant the singer had to look after her younger siblings. 'It was going on in the home for a long time,' she previously said of her dad's drug use to Guardian. 'My dad got put out of the house a few times because she was not having that around us. My mom had to be a woman and a man, working her a** off for us.' Her parents ultimately divorced when she was 14 years old, and one year later, she kicked off her music career. She had formed a girl group with two of her classmates and together, they auditioned for record producer Evan Rogers. He was instantly blown away by her talent and invited her to come to the US and record some demos to send to labels. She was signed to Def Jam Recordings soon after, and the rest if history. The father-daughter duo became embroiled in a public feud after she kicked him off her tour in 2009 and he spoke to media about her relationship with Chris Brown Rihanna's complicated relationship with her father was brought into the spotlight in 2009, four years after she released her first single, when she admitted that they hadn't spoke in over a year. 'I've been the one trying to reconcile with him forever,' she said during an appearance on Ryan Seacrest's Kiis FM radio show. 'I haven't heard from my father in over a year. I try though, I reached out to him. I did my part. Now it's on him.' At the time, she said they had a falling out after he 'embarrassed' her on her tour. 'He did something that was a little embarrassing,' she dished. 'He disrespected some people on the bus and I didn't like that, so I kind of just let him go back home. 'I didn't think it was going to be a thing where we weren't talking to each other. I just thought: "You just need some time away right now." 'Every time I tried to call him after that, that was it. I contacted him on numerous occasions - father's day, his birthday - and just nothing.' The pop star also said at the time that she was 'upset' that her dad had given interviews following her assault at the hands of then-boyfriend Chris Brown. 'He kind of did something that was really upsetting. He turned his back on me and went to the media,' she continued. 'He got paid to talk about stuff - all these little interviews he was doing after the whole situation in February. 'I hadn't spoken to him and he was speaking as though we did. It was so disappointing to me.' In 2012, however, Rihanna told Oprah that she had 'repaired' their relationship. 'He taught me everything, and as awful as he was to my mom, at times, it didn't compare to how great he was as a father,' she said on her show. 'And I had to come to terms with that, and I was able to close that gap with him.' I had two doubles and tripped over a chair ... Security came up and said "we're taking you home,"' he said. 'I said, "But I haven't seen my daughter yet" … and they said, "Don't matter man."' He added: 'I'm sad how it ended of course, I should have never taken that first drink or any drink for that matter. I wish I had seen her of course. 'She will probably hear how I was and how I had a few drinks, so I guess she would be angry with me. I think she is, I'm not sure, we haven't spoken just yet. 'I feel bad because I let her down because she spend all that money putting me in rehab, [and] then find me drunk somewhere. It is not good. What can I say but I'm sorry. It's me who f**ed up.' Asked what possessed him to drink at the event, Ronald claimed he was depressed that his two older children from a previous relationship – Rihanna's half brother and sister Jamie and Samantha - weren't invited. Ronald said he feels terrible for breaking his promise to stop drinking to his daughter. But when asked if he was an alcoholic, he insisted: 'Me, n,. drunk and disorderly. I don't see myself as an alcoholic, I don't realize when I get that drunk. 'Call me a drunk or alcoholic in denial, whatever you want to call me but I have realized I could drink or not drink. 'I only start[ed] drinking, once I come back here in December.' Rihanna sued her dad in 2019 for allegedly trying to cash in on her fame by using their family name to brand his entertainment business Things became more tense between them in January 2019 after it was revealed that Rihanna had sued her dad for allegedly trying to cash in on her fame by using their family name to brand his entertainment business, Fenty Entertainment. In legal papers first obtained by The Blast, the singer, alleged Ronald, along with a business partner, Moses Perkins, he has been soliciting business by falsely acting as her agent. Despite having no authority to act on his daughter's behalf, Ronald was said to have booked her on a $15 million tour in Latin America and two concerts, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for $400,000. Rihanna asked for damages from her father, and an injunction on his business, set up in 2017. A year later, however, it was reported that Rihanna had helped her father after he contracted coronavirus, sending him a ventilator and checking in on him on a daily basis. She withdrew her lawsuit in September 2021, and it's believed that the two came to a settlement. They seemed to have reconciled before his sock death at age 70, as he revealed the singer sent him photos of her baby bump before debuting it to the world TMZ reported on Saturday that Ronald died in Los Angeles following an illness. Starcomm Network, a radio station in Rihanna's native Barbados, has also reported Ronald's death. As for where their relationship stood before his shocking passing, it seemed they had reconciled in recent years. In 2022, he told Page Six that he was 'over the moon' after Rihanna revealed that she was expecting her first child with A$AP Rocky. 'I'm so happy that I jumped for joy. I'm still so excited,' he gushed. 'Rihanna always said that she wanted children, she loves kids. 'She always takes care of her cousins' kids… she's going to be a good mom.' Ronald, who spoke via phone from his home in Barbados, said he found A$AP Rocky to be 'a very cool guy' after the two got a chance to meet when his daughter brought the rapper home in December 2020. 'I like him,' he added, before revealing that he got the news of Rihanna's pregnancy a day before she went public with her burgeoning tummy. 'I just got the news from her last night, and she sent me some photos,' he said. 'I'm just over the moon. She's beautiful inside and out.'

Emmy award-winning actor Valerie Mahaffey dies aged 71

Valerie Mahaffey, the Emmy-award winning actor known for her roles on Northern Exposure, Desperate Housewives and Young Sheldon, died on Friday. She was 71. Her husband, actor Joseph Kell, said in a statement to Variety: 'I have lost the love of my life, and America has lost one of its most endearing actresses. She will be missed.' Kell said she died on 30 May in Los Angeles after a battle with cancer. Mahaffey had a career which spanned nearly 50 years and was known for playing eccentric characters, including the one for which she won a supporting actress Emmy in 1992: as hypochondriac Eve living in the fictional Alaska town featured in Northern Exposure, which aired from 1990 to 1995. Mahaffey most recently received an Independent Spirit award nomination for her role as the optimistic Madame Reynard in Azazel Jacobs' 2020 dark comedy French Exit. Michelle Pfeiffer, who played opposite Mahaffey in French Exit, posted on social media: 'One of our brightest stars was stolen from us yesterday. Such a remarkable talent and human.' She co-starred in Big Sky, David E Kelley's ensemble detective drama series which aired on ABC from 2020 to 2021. She also portrayed the grandiose Lorna Harding in the first two seasons of Dead to Me, the Netflix comedy starring Christina Applegate. Mahaffey was born in Indonesia on 16 June 1953 and was raised there until she was 11 before graduating from high school in Texas and going on to study at the University of Texas. She began her acting career on the stage in New York City, appearing in six Broadway six plays including Dracula opposite Raul Julia and Play Memory directed by Harold Prince. She also played Ashley Bennett on the soap opera The Doctors, for which she earned a Daytime Emmy nomination. She collected two Obie awards for her theater work in Top Girls and in Alan Bennett's Talking Heads. Mahaffey's versatility kept her constantly in demand for guest roles and she amassed dozens of series credits including Seinfeld, Wings, ER, Glee, Grey's Anatomy and The Mindy Project. She played the manipulative Alma Hodge, ex-wife of Kyle MacLachlan's Orson Hodge, on Desperate Housewives from 2006 to 2007 and recurred as the teacher Victoria MacElroy on Young Sheldon from 2017 to 2020. Survivors include her husband and daughter, Alice. Rob Morrow, Mahaffey's Northern Exposure co-star, posted on social media that Mahaffey 'was a breath of fresh air, joy and laughs' as Eve on the series. 'We all adored her,' he said.
