SC cancels Dheeraj Wadhawan's bail in DHFL scam, asks surrender in 2 weeks
A Bench of Justices Sanjay Kumar and Satish Chandra Sharma passed the order after examining a report submitted by a medical board.
The SC's ruling came in response to an appeal filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), challenging the Delhi High Court's order of September 9, 2024. The High Court had granted bail to Wadhawan on medical grounds, observing that he met the definition of a 'sick person'.
CBI says no serious illness
During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing for the CBI, argued that Wadhawan did not suffer from any serious illness. He further said that huge sums of money had been siphoned off in the case and urged the court to cancel the bail.
Wadhawan and his brother Kapil Wadhawan, were arrested in July 2022. The CBI filed a chargesheet in October 2022, which was later taken on record by the court.
The DHFL scam
The case was triggered by a complaint from the Union Bank of India, which led to a first information report (FIR). The complaint alleged that DHFL, through its former Chairman Kapil Wadhawan, director Dheeraj Wadhawan, and others, conspired to cheat a group of 17 banks. The accused allegedly induced the banks to sanction loans worth ₹42,871.42 crore, much of which was misappropriated.
Massive financial irregularities
DHFL, once a major housing finance company in India, is now at the centre of one of the country's biggest financial frauds.
According to a KPMG audit covering 2016-2019, the company disbursed over ₹29,000 crore to 66 entities linked to the Wadhawan brothers. These loans were allegedly processed without proper checks and lacked sufficient collateral.
The scam also involved a fictitious "Bandra Branch" that existed only in DHFL's internal software system. This fake branch was reportedly used to route money to these shell companies. The CBI claims that thousands of fake borrower accounts were created using real customer data. These accounts were used to borrow over ₹14,000 crore and also to fraudulently claim ₹1,880 crore in interest subsidies under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, a government housing scheme for the poor.

APSRTC Hire Bus Owners' Association's seeks subsidy under SC/ST sub-plan
Vehicle owners from SC, ST and OBC sections have urged the government to release the subsidy amount, at least through the SC/ST sub-plan funds, for their vehicles purchased under the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) scheme. At a press conference in Vijayawada on Thursday (August 7), they alleged gross injustice meted out at them by the previous government, which did not release the subsidies to them from 2020 to 2024. As a result, they were pushed into severe financial distress and were unable to pay their monthly instalments, salaries to drivers and cleaners and meet the vehicle maintenance expenses. Many had to mortgage family gold or take loans against their homes, they said. Owners of contract buses said the YSRCP government's reverse tendering policy had hit them hard. They said while assigning their buses to the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), they were allotted non-profitable routes, leading to a loss of about ₹50,000 per bus every month due to poor mileage. Moreover, APSRTC used their drivers as on-call drivers, but paid them more than the owners, leading to a shortage of drivers for the owners themselves. They said as a result, when their buses couldn't operate, they incurred losses and had to pay penalties for non-operation, which only added to the burden. They said many among them were now unable to run their buses and were in a state of financial collapse and requested that if at least the pending subsidies are released, they would get some relief. They said the TDP-led NDA government had promised to release the subsidies by May 15, but the commitment had not yet been fulfilled.

Scribe murder: 2 wanted bros killed in encounter
Lucknow: Two brothers wanted for the murder of Sitapur-based journalist Raghvendra Vajpayee were killed in an encounter with a joint team of the Special Task Force (STF) and the local police near Dulhapur Tiraha in Sitapur early Thursday. Vajpayee, 36, a resident of Vikasnagar in the Maholi area of Sitapur, was shot dead on March 8, near the Hempur railway overbridge on the Lucknow-Delhi National Highway while he was heading to Sitapur on a motorbike. Raju Tiwari (46) alias Rizwan and Sanjay Tiwari (44) alias Shibbu alias Shakeel Khan, residents of Atwa village under Mishrikh police station in Sitapur, sustained bullet injuries in the exchange of fire and were declared dead during treatment, police said. Earlier, a reward of Rs 1 lakh each had been announced for their arrests. The STF Noida unit, led by additional SP Rajkumar Mishra and deputy SP Navendu Kumar, acting on intelligence inputs, laid an ambush around 4.45 am with local police after receiving a tip-off that the Tiwari brothers were en route to Sitapur from Pihani on a motorcycle to execute another crime. "When signalled to stop, the duo opened fire on the police team. In retaliatory firing, both were hit. They were taken to CHC Pisawan and then referred to the district hospital, where they succumbed. The police recovered a carbine (9 mm), a pistol (.32 bore), two country-made pistols (.315 bore), 36 live rounds and 13 used cartridges of various bores, and a bike and a keypad mobile phone from the spot," said ASP Mishra. Raju Tiwari alias Rizwan was first jailed in 2004 for motorcycle theft. He later committed several serious crimes, including the murder of sub inspector Parvez Ali in Lakhimpur Kheri on April 27, 2006. Sanjay Tiwari alias Shibbu alias Shakeel Khan was the main accused in the 2011 murder of one Devi Sahay Shukla in the Machhrehta police station area of Sitapur. The two brothers were born of an interfaith love marriage between their mother Najjo and father Krishna Gopal Tripathi and curiously had separate names from both sides of their parents. Journalist Raghvendra Vajpayee's murder was allegedly orchestrated by a temple priest, Shivanand Baba alias Vikas Rathore, who paid Rs 4 lakh to contract killers Raju and Sanjay. According to the investigation, Raghvendra reportedly caught the priest in a compromising situation with another individual inside the temple premises. Fearing public exposure, the priest conspired to eliminate the journalist and hired the Tiwari brothers to carry out the killing. While three accused, main conspirator Shivanand Baba, Nirmal Singh and Aslam Ghazi, were arrested earlier, the two brothers had been absconding. Notice served on Kothukarar to demolish wall raised by caste Hindus at Muthuladampatti
The Revenue Department has issued a notice directing caste Hindus belonging to the Thottia Naicker community at Muthuladampatti in Karur to remove within 15 days a wall they had built allegedly to prevent access to Scheduled Caste (Arunthathiyar) people. An uneasy calm has prevailed between members of the Scheduled Caste (SC) community and the caste Hindus, a dominant group, since the latter raised the wall measuring about 200 feet in length and 10 feet in height about three weeks ago. The SC community alleged that it was a 'wall of untouchability'. They claimed the wall was meant to deny the SC residents access to areas where caste Hindus live. The caste Hindus denied the allegation, and claimed they had built the wall to prevent anti-social activities by 'outsiders' under the influence of alcohol. Members of the dominant community reportedly blocked attempts by the Arunthathiyars to build a stage for organising programmes during the annual Sri Muthumariamman Temple festival, and a public toilet on poramboke land. According to sources, the notice issued by the Revenue Inspector of Vellianai to the Kotthukarar (leader) of Thottia Naickers said the wall was constructed on a piece of poramboke land. It was an encroachment, and was built without obtaining permission. Hence, it should be demolished within 15 days. Otherwise, suitable action would be taken as per the law. Confirming the development, M. Mohamed Pysal, Revenue Divisional Officer, Karur, told The Hindu that the members of the Thottia Naicker community had been apprised of the situation. Since the wall was raised in a public space, they were asked to remove it on their own, he said. In a related development, the Thottia Naickers filed a civil suit before the District Munsif Court, seeking a permanent injunction restraining the Arunthathiyars from interfering in the peaceful possession and enjoyment of the land where the wall was raised. In the petition, M. Subburaj, Kothukarar, and three others, said they had been using the vacant site, situated at Sri Pattalamman and Sri Bagavathiamman Temple at Muthuladampatti, for a long time. Devotees would congregate in large numbers during the temple festivals. The vacant site and surrounding areas were holy places.
