Tommy Heinsohn was a Boston Celtics legend in more ways than most people realize
Tommy Heinsohn was a Boston Celtics legend in more ways than most people realize. The only member of the Celtics alumni community who had a role in the first 17 banners hung by the storied ball club, Heinsohn had an iconic career with three distinct phases. First, of course, was that of his time as a player for Boston, the Jersey City, New Jersey native winning a total of eight titles with the Celtics before he retired from the game in 1965.
Heinsohn would pick up the helm of the Celtics as head coach in 1969 after fellow Boston Hall of Famer and then-player-coach Bill Russell retired from both roles. He'd help guide Boston to two more titles in the mid-1970s, then transition into broadcasting after leaving the Cs as coach to start a four-decade partnership with beloved broadcaster Mike Gorman. Did we mention he was also an accomplished painter?
The folks behind the "NBC Sports Boston" YouTube channel put together a clip recounting Heinsohn's career ahead of his induction to the Hoops Hall for coaching back in 2015. Check it out below!

NBA announces prime time showdown between Celtics and Pistons on MLK Day

The Boston Celtics are used to the spotlight, but they might be more in the dark next season with a potential down year on the horizon. The NBA's early 2025-26 schedule release confirmed that, as the Celtics won't play on opening night or have a Christmas Day game for the first time in a decade. The most marquee matchup on the books for them at the moment is a Martin Luther King Jr. Day contest with the Detroit Pistons. The Eastern Conference showdown tips off at 8 p.m. (ET) at Little Caesar's Arena and will air on Peacock and NBC. This marks the fifth year in a row that the Celtics have played on the January holiday, meanwhile, the Pistons haven't hosted a game on MLK Day since 2018. The Celtics and Pistons find themselves on different paths heading into the 2025-26 season. Boston will have to overcome a devastating injury to its go-to guy, Jayson Tatum, and make sense of a retooled roster. Conversely, Detroit will enter the regular season with more optimism than usual since the East is relatively up for grabs and Pistons star guard Cade Cunningham is healthy and fresh off his first All-Star appearance. The rest of the Celtics' schedule remains a mystery, yet the entirety of the upcoming slate should be released by the end of the week. Who is RJ Luis Jr., and why did the Boston Celtics trade for him?

Who is RJ Luis Jr., and why did the Boston Celtics trade for him? The Celtics elected to send vet reserve forward Georges Niang into the Utah Jazz cap space along with a pair of second round draft picks last week, taking back only the undrafted two way wing in the deal in order to make it the minimum trade requirements in the NBA's collective bargaining agreement. In so doing, the front office also created a bit of a log jam with their own two way players, eventually deciding to cut ties with more veteran two way forward Miles Norris with No. 57 2025 draft pick Max Shulga also signed to a two way deal and No. 46 2025 draft pick Amari Williams yet to sign any deal with Boston. The folks behind the "NESN" YouTube channel put together a clip from their "Hold My Banner" podcast that takes a closer look at the trade for Luis Jr. Check it out below! Neemias Queta wants to boost free throw attempts with Boston Celtics, develop 3-pointer

When it comes to potential goals for Boston Celtics big man Neemias Queta in a season his role is set to explode from former levels playing for the team off the bench as a deep rotation options, you probably did not have boosting his free throw rate at the top of your list. But the Portuguese center is hoping to do exactly that, according to the man himself in a recent interview with CLNS Media reporter Bobby Manning. To be fair, it also was not at the top of Queta's list of goals for the coming season, either, when he was asked what he can do better. "I think it's making sure I get in great shape," said Queta. "Go out there and make elite decisions with the ball in my hands and making sure I get great finishes this year." "I also want to raise up my free throw attempts this year," he added. "I just want to be aggressive and make sure I get my percentage up on the free throw line, too." Less surprisingly, the Celtic center also wants to work on his shot from beyond the arc. "I think I always work on the 3s no matter what," said Queta. "You never know when you need one of them and like even if I'm not a great shooter off of the 3-point line, if I'm open, and I have got to shoot it, I will shoot it confidently. You never know it. I want to make them." Listen to "Havlicek Stole the Pod" on: Spotify: iTunes: YouTube:
