Late one night in his dorm room, Minh Le, a computer science major, was having a hard time concentrating on his studies.
Le was a whiz with computers and had little trouble with the material at Simon Fraser University, a public research school just outside Vancouver, British Columbia. But a video game he had designed in his spare time was earning Le and his co-creator more than $20,000 every month from advertising.
More than 100,000 players at a time — terrorists vs. counterterrorists — were battling over helpless hostages or ticking bombs in Le's first-person shooter, Counter-Strike. 'I just wanted to make a game that was fun to pick up and frag out,' Le said in a recent video interview.
Counter-Strike was destined for even more.
Officially released in the fall of 2000 by Valve Corporation, Counter-Strike spawned a half-dozen sequels and an esports vertical that continues to generate billions from the sales of cosmetic weapon skins. It has influenced decades of shooters and is arguably one of the most important video games ever made.
Little about Counter-Strike's origins hinted at what was to come. Le's lifelong passion for gaming and computer programming had attracted him to the somewhat underground world of 'modding' — modifying existing code to create new and sometimes radically different variations of popular games.
Modding a game is cheaper and faster than building an entirely new one from scratch, and it allows amateur programmers to add some imagination with limited resources. In 1996, during his freshman year of college, Le designed Navy SEALs, a military-themed mod of the fantasy shooter Quake. Two years later he created Action Quake 2, a fast-paced game inspired by 'Die Hard' and 'Lethal Weapon' that was derived from Quake's sequel.

Mom goes into labor dressed as the Grinch—and finds joy in the chaos

Labor doesn't exactly RSVP to our plans. It doesn't care if you're mid-grocery run, at a wedding, or, in the case of Canadian mom Katelyn Eagleson, dressed head-to-toe as the Grinch on Halloween night. The 19-year-old from Vernon, British Columbia, went into labor while trick-or-treating with her younger brother and ended up rolling into the hospital in full costume: green face paint, Santa suit, and even an onion in hand. 'It was really hard for me to walk, so my husband grabbed me a wheelchair, and I wheeled into the emergency room in full costume,' she told Newsweek. 'We couldn't stop laughing because I was dressed up, and other people in the ER started laughing, too.' Nurses laughed right along Her due date wasn't until November 28—nearly a month away—so the whole scene caught everyone by surprise. Nurses at Vernon Jubilee Hospital tried to keep it professional, but Katelyn encouraged them to join in the laughter. 'It made me feel more comfortable and made the experience more fun,' she said. At one point, staff even snapped a photo of her mid-contraction, still trying to smile through the green paint. Related: This mom tried something wild at 40 weeks to induce labor—and spoiler: it worked TikTok moms know the feeling Katelyn's TikTok has now been viewed more than 7.1 million times, with thousands of parents chiming in to say her story captures both the comedy and chaos of labor. 'I think you had an original experience,' one user posted. 'And then imagine the face while pushing for the baby omg,' another added. And one summed it up: 'Trying to steal Christmas, but ended up stealing our hearts.' The birth didn't follow her script Though the costume moment was unforgettable, labor stretched far longer than Katelyn imagined. She was admitted at 4 centimeters dilated and endured 18 days of contractions before giving birth to her daughter, Olivia, on November 18. By then, the Grinch makeup had worn off—but the story was sealed as family legend. Related: Here's how a pelvic floor PT preps for labor & childbirth Why this resonates with every mom For every hilarious detail, there's a bigger truth moms recognize instantly: labor is unpredictable. You can write a birth plan, pack the perfect bag, or time your due date down to the week, but babies have their own timelines. And sometimes, you find yourself laughing through contractions in green face paint because humor is the only way through the chaos. Solve the daily Crossword

Why Magic, Dragons and Explicit Sex Are in Bookstores Everywhere

On a whim one night, Simona Stallone clicked on some Harry Potter fanfiction, and quickly tumbled down a rabbit hole. Ms. Stallone, a 28-year-old real estate agent and content creator who lives in Toronto, kept seeing posts about 'Dramione' all over her feed. People on TikTok were raving about stories set in the world of Harry Potter, written by fans, that imagined a romance between the bookish Hermione Granger and her antagonist, the arrogant bully Draco Malfoy. As a Harry Potter enthusiast who had always thought that J.K. Rowling should have brought Draco and Hermione together, Ms. Stallone was primed to become a Dramione addict. Lying next to her sleeping boyfriend, she clicked on 'Manacled,' a dark fantasy set in an alternate universe where Harry Potter is dead and the evil wizard Voldemort has triumphed. The story centered on an illicit, morally ambiguous romance between Hermione, a magic-wielding healer, and Draco, a vicious executioner who later holds Hermione captive as a prisoner of war. It had familiar elements from the Harry Potter books, but with a delicious twist — the characters were a little older and a lot hotter. And they were cast in decidedly more adult scenarios. 'Manacled' quickly became her 'whole personality.' 'I was fully consumed by this book,' Ms. Stallone said. 'I define my life as before and after 'Manacled' — you know, how some people are like, before Christ. ' She got tattoos of imagery from 'Manacled'— a constellation on her shoulder and a hummingbird on her ankle. She read the book half a dozen times, and when she wasn't reading it, she listened to a fan-made audio recording of the story on triple speed to get to the best parts faster. Her friends gave her a three-volume, 1,188 page bound edition of 'Manacled' for her birthday. She started a 'Manacled' book club and pressed the story on anyone who would listen. Other unreleased songs completed from the E•MO•TION sessions include 'Guardian Angel,' 'Back Of My Heart,' and 'Lost In Devotion.' The album will also arrive digitally on all DSPs on October 17th. Pre-orders are ongoing. Released in the US on August 21st, 2015, E•MO•TION served as a critical turning point for Carly Rae Jepsen after the runaway success of her breakout single 'Call Me Maybe.' Jepsen also celebrated the 10th anniversary of E•MO•TION in Los Angeles on Tuesday night with a special underplay at The Troubadour.
