
Martin Lewis issues ISA alert to all parents missing out on £1,000 boost
Money-saving guru Martin Lewis has responded to one parent's question about whether her 18-year-old daughter should open up a Lifetime ISA now that she's legally old enough to do so
Swathes of parents could be missing out on a 'free' £1,000 bonus that could help their children get onto the property ladder. With soaring house prices, rising energy bills, and climbing council tax - owning your own home seems an impossible feat for many young people.
However, speaking on his eponymously named BBC podcast, Martin Lewis explained how a Lifetime ISA (LISA) could help young Brits get the keys to their new pad. The money-saving guru was asked by mum Sarah, who has an 18-year-old daughter, when her child should open a LISA now that she is legally able to do so.
"If your daughter plans to buy a first-time home and is pretty sure that she's going to do it and it's going to be a home that costs under £450,000 then putting money and saving money into a Lifetime ISA is really powerful," Martin replied. "You can put up to £4,000 a year and the state will add 25 per cent on top. In other words, if you max it out, the state will give you a grand on top of the four grand every tax year until you buy [a house]."
While the LISA account might seem too good to be true, there are a few catches. Firstly, you need to be aged 18-39 to open an account, and it has to be open for at least one year before you can use it. Therefore, parents should be urging their children to open an account as soon as possible, which you can do with just £1.
"The key problem is if you withdraw money from it for any other reason than buying the qualifying house - and qualifying means a house under £450,000, you'll be charged an effective penalty of 6.25 per cent," Martin warned. "Alternatively, you could leave it there until you're aged 60 and [then] you won't pay a penalty [for withdrawing the funds]."
Martin went on to advise Sarah that if her daughter is likely to be buying a house in the next five-10 years, in an area where buying a £450,000 property is feasible, it may be worth opening the account ASAP. Again, this can be done with just £1.

Remember, you will pay a withdrawal charge of 25 per cent if you take money out of the LISA for any other reason than buying your first home (under the threshold), or after you've turned 60. Terminally ill people with less than 12 months to live can also withdraw money without a fee.
"Assuming no growth, initial savings of £800 will earn a 25 per cent government bonus of £200 and give you a pot of £1,000," explained GOV UK. "If you wish to withdraw the entire pot, a 25 per cent charge will apply to the full £1,000. You'll have to pay a government withdrawal charge of £250. This will leave you with £750."
As previously reported, some Brits have been hit with staggering penalties of up to £11,000 due to unauthorised withdrawals. This has lead to growing calls for the government to increase the LISA cap from £450,000 to £600,000 (the average home in London in August 2024 was £531,000) or scrap the 25 per cent penalty.
"The high financial pressure of renting has made it difficult for people to save for their first homes, with first-time buyers increasingly well into their thirties and more likely to need family homes rather than classic starter flats," Rajan Lakhani, a spokesperson for money-saving app Plum, said. "In many parts of the country, this is simply unachievable for £450,000. By raising the property price limit to a more equitable £600,000, Rachel Reeves can empower first-time buyers to buy the properties they actually need without fear of being penalised."

Energy Price Cap warning as price set to increase in October
This follows a similar rise in April, and a cut to come in July, but will still come as a blow to customers, who face increasing bill prices and rising food costs. Martin Lewis says: "The latest predictions from Eon, British Gas & EDF have just come out. All are up on a week ago when it was predicted Oct would stay roughly the same as now (we're now 1/3 of the way through the Oct Cap assessment period). "Much of this is on the back of the rise in energy wholesale prices due to the conflict in the Middle East. Current predictions range - Up 1.6%-2.8% Oct - Up c.1% on top of that in Jan - Up c.3% on top of that next April Though the further out you go the more crystal ball gazing it is." Not great news. The Energy Price Cap now predicted to RISE about 2% or 3% in October. The latest predictions from Eon, British Gas & EDF have just come out. The term is quite confusing and it's important to note it's not the maximum price you will pay - it's an average. If you use more, you will pay more. The cap was introduced on January 1 2019 by regulator Ofgem, with the aim of preventing the millions of households on expensive variable tariffs from being ripped off. But it only limits what you pay for each unit of gas and electricity that you use. It's based roughly on wholesale energy prices (those that firms pay) and applies only to providers' standard and default tariffs, which the vast majority of households are now on. Recommended reading: Warm Home Discount There is some better news for those on very low incomes this winter, with an expansion of the £150 Warm Home Discount to 2.7m more low income households winter 2025/26. Martin Lewis added: "It'll be done by getting rid of the 'high energy cost' criteria for those on means tested benefits like Universal Credit (which helps working people and non working on low incomes). "That's good as it's a terribly implemented system which left many, literally, unfairly out in the cold."

‘Don't do anything in a rush': Belfast's £10m winner offers advice to €250m EuroMillions ticket holder yet to come forward
A Belfast man who won the lottery nearly 30 years ago has urged the winner of Tuesday's massive EuroMillions jackpot to 'put it in the bank and get their head around it'. Former bus driver Peter Lavery scooped £10.2m in 1996. This week's EuroMillions draw saw someone in the Republic of Ireland, who bought their ticket in a shop in Co Wexford, win €250m (£213m). The numbers were 13, 22, 23, 44, 49, while the lucky numbers were three and five. The record-breaking win surpasses the €175m record for the largest cheque ever presented to an Irish player in February 2019. Previously earning £200 a week driving his bus route, Mr Lavery quit his job two days after he won £10m. He went on a 10-person holiday to a five-star resort in St Lucia and also recalled taking 22 people to New York for St Patrick's Day. Mr Lavery also set up a charity in memory of his parents and gave around £2m to other charities. Speaking on BBC's Good Morning Ulster today, Mr Lavery, a director of Titanic Distillers, admitted that when compared to €250m, his £10.2m didn't sound like a lot. 'It does not, but let me tell you something, what I won was a massive amount of money,' he said. 'It was over 29 years ago, it's unbelievable. I just want to say good luck to the person who has won it. 'They are probably shocked. At the time, I was one of the biggest wins in Northern Ireland, £10m in 1996 is a lot of money. You just can't be an ordinary worker today and have a quarter of a billion in your back pocket. 'It's a big scoop. Whoever has it, fair play to them. I hope they really enjoy it – that is more important than anything else.' 'Everyone has that dream of winning the lottery. You never think it is going to be you. Everybody plays the lottery to change their lives. 'You don't do half the things you say you are going to do. I have seen the globe, I have done everything else. 'I was young at the time, I was 34, a good age to get it. I have had a good life of it. I just hope and pray that the person, or persons, who have won it will have the same luck as myself.' It has not yet been confirmed exactly where the winning ticket was sold, but the National Lottery has urged the winner 'to stay calm, get independent legal and financial advice and contact us as soon as they can'. Speaking on Wednesday morning, National Lottery spokesperson Emma Monaghan confirmed the winning ticket was purchased in a retail store somewhere in Ireland and said more information on the location where it was bought will be released in the coming days. 'So, shortly after the draw last night, a small number of people internally got word that it was an Irish winner, so it was all hands-on deck last night,' she told RTÉ's Morning Ireland. 'But we're delighted with it. We're delighted for the winner. I mean, it's just such great news for our players and they've now become the highest ever winner of an Irish National Lottery game. So, that is some title to hold.' She said the National Lottery's prize claims team opens from 9am this morning and as of yet, the lucky winner is yet to make contact. 'At the moment we're just urging everyone to check their tickets very carefully this morning. If they are holding the winning ticket, the most important thing they can do is to sign the back of it and keep it somewhere safe. And the next step then is to contact our prize team,' she said. 'I don't know who has won it, but somebody out there is holding the winning ticket. In terms of location, what I can tell you is that the winning ticket was bought in a retail store somewhere in Ireland.'
