Serian secondary school teacher claims trial to five counts of sexually abusing male student
KUCHING (July 31): A male counselling teacher pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to five counts of committing physical sexual abuse against a 16-year-old male student at a secondary school in Serian.
The 50-year-old accused, who was represented by a lawyer, entered the plea in separate courtrooms before judges Iris Awen Jon and Zuraidah Zakaria.
He was charged with three counts of making the victim touch his own genitals in August, September and November 2023 in the prefects' room at the school, and two counts of touching the victim's genitals in September and November 2023 in the same room.
The charges against him were framed under Section 14(c) and Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, punishable under Section 14 and read together with Section 16 of the same Act.
Section 14 provides for up to 20 years' imprisonment and whipping, while Section 16 provides for up to five years' jail and no fewer than two strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
Both judges set Sept 29, 2025 for case management, with Judge Iris granting the accused bail of RM40,000 with two local sureties for each of the three charges, and Judge Zuraidah setting bail at RM20,000 with two local sureties for each of the two charges.
The total amount of bail for all five charges was RM160,000.
The accused was also instructed to report to the nearest police station on the first Monday of every month and surrender his passport to the court until the disposal of the case, as well as not to interfere with prosecution witnesses.

In the video, the trio are seen eating at a fast food restaurant and placing chicken bones in a pack of rice. They then hand it to a homeless man who is sleeping on the sidewalk. The man appears shocked after opening the packet but responds with a simple gesture of thanks. Following backlash from netizens, the trio later issued a video apology. They claimed the man had been informed about the filming beforehand and had consented to it. They also claimed that the chicken bones were not his actual meal and they had given him a full meal of chicken with rice earlier.

Teacher claims trial to sexual assault of 11-year-old pupil
KOTA BARU: A teacher claimed trial at the Sessions Court here today to four counts of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old male pupil in March and May last year. Syahril Faiza Zakaria, 51, was charged with committing two of the offences in a car at 2 pm in March 2024, while the remaining two were allegedly committed in a toilet at a resort in Pantai Cahaya Bulan here in May the same year. The charges were framed under Section 14(b) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, punishable under the same section and read together with Section 16 of the same Act, which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping for each count upon conviction. Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Faiz Fitri Mohamad did not propose bail, citing public interest, the welfare of the victim, and the position of trust held by the accused. However, lawyer Mohd Saifullah Che Mat, representing the accused, appealed for bail to be granted, saying that his client was not a flight risk, had been suffering from a heart condition since May 2024 and was battling severe depression. He also said that his client, formerly posted at a primary school in Tumpat, had since been transferred to the district education office. Judge Zulkifli Abllah set bail at RM30,000 for all charges and imposed additional conditions prohibiting the accused from harassing the victim and requiring him to report to the nearest police station every two months. The case has been set for mention on Sept 10.

Chicken bone 'meal' for homeless man: MCMC records statement from influencers
CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has recorded the statements of three social media content creators over the spread of a video showing them giving chicken bones as a "meal" to a homeless man. The commission, in a statement, said the content of the video was considered to be offensive and has triggered widespread anger and condemnation among netizens, in addition to touching on the sensitivities of the diverse community in the country. "Investigations are being carried out under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 which provides for a maximum fine of RM500,000 or imprisonment of up to two years or both," it said. MCMC said the investigation process and the recording of the statements were carried out at the Iskandar Puteri police headquarters in Johor today. It said three smartphones and three SIM cards were seized to facilitate investigations. MCMC said it will continue to strengthen the implementation of its digital literacy initiatives through the Safer Internet Campaign. "This campaign is to shape a digital-savvy, ethical, and responsible society. "The initiative also fosters a culture of creating prudent, ethical, and courteous content, in addition to raising awareness of noble values in the country's digital ecosystem." It was reported yesterday that three content creators had posted a video of themselves eating fried chicken before putting the bones into a meal box and giving it to a homeless man. They had said they were doing a good deed because it would be a waste to just throw the bones away. The trio came under fire from netizens for the video, which was later taken down. One of them later apologised for their actions, saying it was just a stunt and they had been working with the homeless man and had given him a meal after the video was recorded.
