KZN traditional leader wounded in assassination attempt
'It is very concerning as it paints a picture of a growing trend of violence targeting amakhosi and other figures within the institution of traditional leadership,' said Buthelezi.
According to reports received by the department, Cele was travelling with two people when gunmen opened fire on his vehicle. One person was killed, while Cele and the other passenger sustained injuries.
Buthelezi has called on law enforcement agencies to deploy all necessary resources to apprehend those responsible.
He said he believes the attack on Cele and his companions is an affront to peace and stability by 'forces hell-bent on creating instability' in the province and the institution of traditional leadership.
He extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and wished Cele and his aide a full recovery.
Buthelezi has tasked the department to conduct a full review of the safety of amakhosi in conjunction with other line function departments and law enforcement agencies.
Last month, Induna Gwala, of the Gwala traditional authority in eThekwini, was fatally shot at his home.
Buthelezi called on community members to come forward with any information that will assist law enforcement agencies in apprehending those responsible.

Protesters blockade uMkhanyakude Municipality
'The IFP caucus unequivocally condemns this short-sighted behaviour by individuals who appear to treat the municipality as their fiefdom.' This was the statement made by IFP Whip in uMkhanyakude District Council, Cllr Sihle Ndlovu who claims individuals have blockaded the entrance to the uMkhanyakude District Municipality building. ALSO READ: uMkhanyakude District Municipality challenges Cogta intervention He says they are 'operating with impunity' by actively seeking to disrupt a legal and binding decision by the provincial government to intervene in the municipality. 'Our position, as clearly articulated during the special council meeting on 3 July, is that we fully support the Section 139(1)(b) intervention. We believe that any legal challenge to contest this lawful intervention constitutes a wasteful expenditure of taxpayers' money,' he said. He says the blockade aims to prevent Administrator, Bamba Ndwandwe, from starting his crucial work of turning the municipality. 'The Municipal Manager's failure to cooperate with the Administrator has directly resulted in the non-payment of July salaries' he said. Ndlovu called on the Municipal Manager to instruct security to open the municipal gates, granting employees and the public access to the offices. Last week, uMkhanyakude Council Speaker, Solomon Mkhombo, said they were challenging the intervention in the Pietermaritzburg High Court, believing the KZN Legislature has not acted fairly. The matter is scheduled to be heard on Friday. Credit and debt collection failures Ndlovu said they support the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Thulasizwe Buthelezi, for launching a forensic investigation into municipal matters. MEC Buthelezi said the Auditor-General (AG) of South Africa, Tsakani Maluleke, requested the intervention due to the 'municipality's inability to implement a credit and debt collection policy' for a number of years, or take appropriate actions to address this. Buthelezi said he was aware of the grave nature of the issues raised by the AG which were raised in the 23 July meeting. 'I hold the AG's office is in the highest regard, and am committed to acting in the interest of the residents of the uMkhanyakude District. These residents bear the brunt of failed service delivery due to a lack of governance, financial, and consequence management measures within the District. 'The AG has requested a formal report from the MEC by 15 August. I will abide by the AG's request and comply with the deadline given,' he said. Don't have the ZO app? 3 suspected poachers caught with rhino horn in KZN
Three suspected rhino poachers, aged between 34 and 50, were arrested in Paulpietersburg, KZN, on Saturday, with two unlicensed rifles and a rhino horn in their possession. Zululand Observer reports that the Zululand Police Cluster spokesperson, Captain Nkosie Gwala, said three men wearing masks entered a game reserve and accosted two security guards. After tying them up, they robbed them of a shotgun, an R5 assault rifle and their cellphones. 'It is alleged that the trio proceeded to shoot a rhino and remove its horn. While busy with their criminal activity, they were distracted by an alarm that had been activated. They fled the scene, leaving the shotgun next to the rhino carcass.' Gwala added that police responded, but discovered the suspects had fled the game reserve. 'Police and private security personnel worked tirelessly throughout the day looking for the suspects. With assistance from community members, they were eventually arrested as they took refuge in the bush.' They will appear in Vryheid Magistrate's Court on charges of armed robbery, rhino poaching and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
