Gandhi Nagar faces civic neglect as Delhi traders slam stalled ₹600 crore redevelopment
NEW DELHI: Once recognised as Asia's mega garment hub, Gandhi Nagar in East Delhi now stands as a symbol of civic neglect, economic decline, and repeated political betrayal. Despite ambitious promises under the government's Rozgar Budget 2022–24, local traders say not a single proposal has materialised — leaving over one lakh workers and traders clinging to hope.
In 2022, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced Gandhi Nagar's redevelopment with modern infrastructure: road resurfacing, multi-level car parks at Pushta Road and Shastri Park, improved metro connectivity, and better drainage. However, according to traders, none of these developments ever reached the ground.
'This market is just a name now. There's no real leadership, and only half the road has even been built,' said Himanshu Jain, a trader with over 40 years in Gandhi Nagar. 'Two slum clusters were demolished for highway work, and even the public toilets were removed. People are suffering every day.' 'Gandhi Nagar is known across India for garment and textile businesses — Sparky Jeans, started by Gautam Gambhir's father, is one of many success stories,' said Deshraj Malhotra. 'Yet, the market lacks even basic infrastructure to support traders and workers.'
Malhotra, president of the Gandhi Nagar Market Association since 1980, was blunt: 'They promised Rs 600 crore for a multiplex. We collected parking fees in good faith, but no parking was ever built. It's been 15 years of struggle — for proper washrooms, drainage, and multi-storey parking. They said it would be beautified like Chandni Chowk. That was just an election-time story.'

Delhi CM warns against defacement of city
The government will start issuing strict orders soon against those who are involved in defacement of city walls by posters and applying paints, chief minister Rekha Gupta said on Saturday while speaking at the launch event of book 'Landscaping ke Mool Siddhant' (Basic Principles of Landscaping) at the Delhi Secretariat. 'We will not allow anyone to spoil the city's appearance. The people of Delhi should also actively contribute to keeping Delhi clean,' the CM said. The event was also attended by the book's author Ajay Kumar Kaushik, member of Parliament (MP) Manoj Tiwari, and tourism minister Kapil Mishra, among others. CM Gupta said the city belongs not just to the government but also to its people. So without public involvement, no city can be made truly clean or green. 'A city doesn't belong to the government alone, it belongs to its people. No government can keep a city clean without the participation of its citizens. There is a shared desire among all of us to see the Yamuna clean, Delhi green, and the city spotless. For this, collective effort is essential,' she said. 'The entire city will be beautified, and the Yamuna river will be rejuvenated with parks and walking tracks along its banks to encourage public engagement with nature,' the CM said, adding that she has envisioned transforming the national Capital into a 'Dilwalon Ki Dilli' where the city is clean and lush green and the Yamuna River is pure and serene. Criticising the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led former Delhi government, the CM said that previous governments never launched genuine initiatives to beautify Delhi. 'They made no real effort to make the city clean. The earlier regimes may have emptied Delhi's treasury, but they failed to sweep away its dust,' the CM Gupta said.

Five years ago, on June 15, 2020, India lost 20 soldiers in the Galwan Valley clash with China in Eastern Ladakh - an event that not only redefined India-China ties but also triggered a series of reforms in India's defence posture and strategic planning along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).The Galwan clash, which saw Indian troops retaliate without firearms under existing protocols, also caused significant casualties on the Chinese side and marked a complete breakdown in trust between the two the years since, India has significantly restructured its military preparedness, reinforced border infrastructure, and intensified diplomatic engagements. The Indian armed forces enhanced their presence across the LAC, especially in Eastern Ladakh, with rapid deployment of troops and high-altitude warfare equipment. Emergency procurement provisions were invoked to expedite defence acquisitions, including surveillance systems, UAVs, artillery, and medical equipment for extreme terrain. The Galwan incident became a catalyst for infrastructure expansion. The Union Budget for FY 2025-26 allocated Rs 6.81 lakh crore to the Ministry of Defence, a 9.53% increase from the previous year. Of this, Rs 7,146 crore was set aside for the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which completed 75 projects worth Rs 2,236 crore in 2024 include roads and bridges in strategic regions like Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Himachal Pradesh. BRO's earlier achievements included the world's highest motorable road at Umling La (19,024 feet) and ongoing development of the Nyoma Airfield and Shinku La last five years have also seen the LAC's digital landscape transformed. Remote villages in Ladakh, including Galwan and Demchok, were connected to 4G networks under a joint initiative by the Indian Army and Bharti Airtel. This step opened up access to telemedicine, digital education, and government schemes, with the potential to improve tourism and local the diplomatic front, over 30 rounds of talks have taken place since 2020. India and China have conducted 21 rounds of Corps Commander-level discussions and multiple Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination (WMCC) meetings. Disengagement has occurred at several friction points: Galwan in July 2020, Pangong Tso in February 2021, PP17A (Gogra-Hot Springs) in August 2021, PP15 in September 2022, and most recently, at Demchok and Depsang in October diplomatic meetings also continued. On June 12, 2025, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong in Delhi to discuss bilateral ties, people-centric engagement, and reopening direct air services. Talks included progress on resuming hydrological data sharing and finalising an updated air services agreement. Visa facilitation, media exchanges, and commemorations of 75 years of India-China diplomatic relations were also partial disengagement, India remains cautious. Mayor lays foundation stones for development works
Visakhapatnam: Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao mentioned that development programmes are being undertaken in all wards to steer Visakhapatnam towards the progress path. On Saturday, he, along with Visakhapatnam south constituency MLA CH Vamsi Krishna Srinivas Yadav, laid foundation stones and inaugurated several project works under the GVMC jurisdiction taken up in the constituency at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore. Speaking on the occasion, the Mayor stated that the coalition government is functioning with a primary goal of developing the state on all fronts. He stressed that under the leadership of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, the coalition government has made plans to provide necessary infrastructure and improved amenities to the public across the wards. A total of Rs 3.5 crore has been allocated for various works in the segment, including cement roads, drainage canals, construction and repairs of community halls, borewells, park renovation, compound walls, arches and other development activities at various localities, said Srinivasa Rao. Areas such as Gollalapalem, Chakali Gedda, Gangula Gedda, Bhupesh Nagar, Allipuram SC Colony road, Bowdara road, Coconut Garden, Mantha Vari Veedhi, Market main road, Sunnapu Veedhi Panja Junction, Government Victoria Hospital, Kotha Agraharam, Kotha Jalaripeta and Golla Veedhi will be developed with the funds received, he informed. The Mayor directed the GVMC engineering department officials to ensure that the works begin at the earliest and that contractors should complete the works with quality within the stipulated time. Speaking on the occasion, South constituency MLA CH Vamsi Krishna Srinivas Yadav stated that infrastructure would be given top priority in each ward. The MLA expressed gratitude to the Mayor for sanctioning and initiating several development works in the constituency. He emphasised that the coalition government is committed to develop Visakhapatnam in a way that garners national recognition.
