IIT Madras launches 2 indigenously developed silicon photonics products

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras on Saturday launched two indigenously developed silicon photonics products, a first for India.
The products designed and developed indigenously at CoE-CPPICS at the IIT Madras can be quickly adopted by the market.
'Indigenously developed field deployable silicon photonic-based quantum random number generator (QRNG) module is a pride for India. The product has been delivered to DRDO to help in advanced quantum cryptography,' said S. Krishnan, IAS, Secretary, MeitY, while congratulating CoE-CPPICS.
The two products launched during the occasion include the Fibre-Array Unit (FAU) attachment tool for Photonic Chip Packaging and the silicon photonic QRNG (Quantum Random Number Generator).
The QRNG module will be available commercially for potential customers through the CPPICS spin-off start-up 'LightOnChip'.
The key applications of QRNG are IT security for military and defence, Cryptographic algorithms, Quantum key distribution (QKD), Scientific Modelling and Simulations, Financial transactions/ Blockchain/ OTP, Gaming Applications, the Insititute said
'Silicon Photonics is an emerging technology that will certainly help design much more efficient and complex hardware for the future. I am very happy that the Silicon Photonics CoE-CPPICS Centre at IIT Madras has now come out with demonstrable products that can be quickly adopted by the market. We hope that multiple such products will continue to come in the future,' said Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras.
Photonic packaging and assembly are a complex and multi-disciplinary design and manufacturing process. To make a Photonic Integrated Circuits (PIC)-enabled module perform according to specification, sub-micron precision alignment and bonding process are required.
At the same time, precise thermal management is required to maintain the thermo-optic stability of the signals.
CoE-CPPICS aims to provide better solutions for microwave and quantum photonics applications such as advanced photonic processors to be used in high-performance RF transceivers, scalable linear optical quantum computing processors for the next-generation qubit computation, and chip-level quantum key generation and distribution circuits, etc.
CPPICS is actively developing indigenous PIC design rules and hardware infrastructure for precision packaging for system-level applications.

JEE Advanced 2025 Results Set for Release; Counselling to Commence Soon

The JEE Advanced 2025 written examination was conducted on May 18 this year, paving the way for admissions to Bachelor of Science (BS), and five-year integrated courses at prestigious IITs across India for the academic year 2025-26. The results are scheduled to be announced on June 2 at 10 am, as confirmed by IIT Kanpur. This year, approximately 1.80 lakh candidates sat for the exam, with around 40,000 expected to be from the Telugu states. Typically, only the top 2.5 lakh rankers from the two phases of the JEE are eligible to participate in JEE Advanced, although the actual number of candidates seldom exceeds 200,000. Last year, eligibility for the JEE Advanced counselling was granted to 48,248 candidates based on the cutoff marks across various reservations. In the previous academic year (2024-25), there were 17,760 seats available in the 23 IITs, with a slight increase anticipated for the current academic year. IIT Madras has already made provisions for 80 additional seats with the introduction of two new courses. IIT Bombay is also expanding its offerings with a new four-year BS in Applied Geophysics, though the number of seats for this course has yet to be disclosed. Experts suggest a modest increase in the number of eligible candidates this year. Following the results announcement on Monday, the JOSAA counselling will commence the very next day, June 3, at 5 pm, organised in a total of six phases as noted by IIT Kanpur's schedule.

Demand for AI professionals to touch 1 million by next year: MeitY report

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in its recent report titled 'India's AI Revolution: A Roadmap to Viksit Bharat' highlighted how the government has been expanding the AI education in the country, resulting in increasing demand for AI professionals that is expected to touch 1 million by next year. As mentioned in the report, under the IndiaAI Future Skills initiative, the government is expanding AI education across undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programs, providing various fellowships to full-time PhD scholars researching AI in the top 50 NIRF-ranked institutes. Additionally, to enhance accessibility, data and AI Labs are being established in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, with a model IndiaAI Data Lab already set up at NIELIT Delhi. Not only this, the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has revealed a significant increase in approved BTech seats for the 2024-25 academic year, with numbers rising to 14.9 lakh. This marks a nearly 16 per cent growth over four years. Free AI courses from Google, Harvard, and IBM to future-proof your career The surge is largely attributed to an over 50 per cent rise in seats for in-demand fields such as Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML), Data Science, Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, and Blockchain, reflecting strong industry demand for skilled professionals in these areas. 'The government is addressing this challenge by revamping university curricula to include AI, 5G, and semiconductor design, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This ensures that graduates acquire job-ready skills, reducing the transition time between education and employment,' reads the report. Meanwhile, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched five new online courses in Artificial Intelligence (AI) on its SWAYAM Plus platform. These courses will be offered free of cost and are designed to make AI education accessible to learners from all academic backgrounds. Interested candidates at the undergraduate, postgraduate or working professionals can register on the SWAYAM Plus platform and apply for the AI courses being offered by the IIT Madras.
