At least six of those reported dead were the ones taken to Bengaluru's Bowring Hospital, according to senior doctors at the state-run hospital. Many others who collapsed in the stampede were taken to Vydehi Hospital on Vittal Mallya Road, it is learnt.
Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) informed us about the celebrations Wednesday morning, he said, adding that Chinnaswamy stadium has a seating capacity of 35,000 but as many as 2-3 lakh people showed up. He also said that neither the KSCA nor the state government 'expected' supporters to show up in such large numbers.
Bengaluru: At least 11 people died and another 47 were injured Wednesday in a stampede when trying to enter the Chinnaswamy Stadium in central Bengaluru to participate in RCB's IPL championship celebrations. Addressing the media in the evening, CM Siddaramaiah said the government has ordered a magisterial probe under the supervision of the district collector and expects a report within 15 days. He also announced Rs 10 lakh ex gratia for next of kin/guardians of each of the deceased, and treatment free of cost for the injured.
Earlier in the day, crowds continued to swell around the central part of the city as people rushed in from all directions towards Vidhana Soudha where the winning squad was being felicitated by Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah and other members of his cabinet.
'People have gathered outside the stadium and are trying to enter it and many were crushed in this chaos,' said one police officer, requesting anonymity.
The RCB team arrived at Bengaluru's HAL airport at 1.30 pm and received by Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar, after which the procession continued till Vidhana Soudha, a distance of about 15 km. People stood alongside the roads to welcome the champions.
Cricketers were felicitated on the Vidhana Soudha steps as people blocked roads between the secretariat and the Karnataka High Court. This was to be followed by a victory parade from Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy stadium, a distance of about just a kilometre, in an open-top bus. But permission for it was denied since it would further disrupt traffic.
The police officer quoted earlier said that some political leaders demanded the victory celebrations at the last minute which did not give them enough time to prepare.
The celebrations were then moved to Chinnaswamy stadium where there were no tickets on sale, entry was 'by invitation only'. Despite this, the crowd tried to enter the stadium.

Women's World Cup: Thiruvananthapuram could host matches scheduled at M Chinnaswamy Stadium

The Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium is still to attain police clearance, putting the ICC Women's ODI World Cup matches at the venue in uncertainty. The future of ICC Women's ODI World Cup matches scheduled to be held at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium has slipped into uncertainty after the hosts KSCA could not obtain the police clearance by August 10. The BCCI had informed the Karnataka State Cricket Association to get the necessary approvals by last Saturday, but, as per the local police officials the process is yet to be completed as on Tuesday. Thiruvananthapuram to host Bengaluru's matches? Meanwhile, the Greenfields Stadium in Karyavattom, Thiruvananthapuram, has emerged as a possible alternative venue to host the matches scheduled in Bengaluru. The ICC showpiece's tournament opener between India and Sri Lanka is currently scheduled to be played at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on September 30, followed by matches between England and South Africa (October 3), India and Bangladesh (October 26), the second semifinal on October 30, and the final on November 2. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD It has been reliably learnt that Kerala Cricket Association officials have been asked about the competition schedule and the venue's readiness to host the big-ticket matches in just over a month's time. As per ICC guidelines, the host association needs to hand over the venue to the global governing body 30 days prior to the tournament's beginning, and no other matches should be held at the stadium in that period. However, the Greenfields Stadium is scheduled to host the Kerala Cricket League (KCL) matches between August 21 and September 7, but the KCA officials are confident of moving the T20 matches to another venue if the World Cup games come their way. 'We have backup venues, if the World Cup matches are shifted here. But as of now we are waiting for a final confirmation,' sources close to the development told PTI. The KSCA officials did not respond to questions regarding the possible venue change, but it's learnt that they have put forward the proposal of holding the World Cup matches behind closed doors in order to secure the police approval. It may be recalled that the KSCA had to shift the ongoing Maharajah T20 Trophy to Mysuru even after deciding to conduct it behind closed doors at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The state body was forced to move the tournament after the one-man D'Cunha Commission deemed the Chinnaswamy Stadium 'unsafe' for large-scale events. The state government appointed the commission to inquire into the stampede on June 4 here in which people died and several others were injured during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations.

‘I didn't enjoy bowling to him': Washington Sundar says he idolised India head coach Gautam Gambhir during IPL days

Despite bursting onto the scene as young as an 18-year-old, Washington Sundar hadn't received the backing with consistent matches as much as he has relished since former India batter Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach last year. Nine of Sundar's 13 Test matches have occurred under Gambhir since late October and the Tamil Nadu all-rounder had a vital role to play during the recently-concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Featuring in four of the five Tests in the UK, Sundar racked up 284 runs including his maiden Test hundred while also bagging seven wickets, comprising a cracking four-wicket haul at the Lord's Cricket Ground, marking the second-best figures by an Indian spinner in England in the 21st century. Sundar heaped praise on the leadership of Gambhir, a fellow southpaw whom he idolised during his formative IPL years in the previous decade. 'He also had No. 5 on the back of his jersey (like me). And obviously he was a left hander, who was extremely elegant. The only thing I didn't enjoy was bowling to him in the IPL. He was someone who was super succesful against me but he is an amazing human being. He has had so much faith in all of us that we would fight at all times and win the game. Really glad to see him happy at the end of the series,' Sundar revealed in an interview with Wisden. Sundar also attributed India's strong performances in the series to the sound communication relayed between coach Gambhir, skipper Shubman Gill and the rest of the squad. 'Credit to them for having such a calm dressing room throughout the series. Their communication was precise and clear on what was expected. Both of them have a lot of belief in their players and that really helps in the bigger picture,' said Sundar. Batting at number five in the Manchester Test, Sundar cracked his maiden Test century during a 203-run association with Ravindra Jadeja as India overhauled a 311-run first-innings deficit to secure a famous draw.
