Rain holiday prevents potential accident as school ceiling collapses in Kerala
The gypsum board ceiling of the main hall at Kodali Government Lower Primary School collapsed suddenly. However, no injuries were reported as the school was closed due to the rain holiday, officials said.
Parents and residents, who staged a protest at the school premises, said the hall was routinely used for morning assembly and daily activities.
"Teachers used to make children sit in this hall before sending them to classrooms. If there hadn't been a holiday today and this had happened during school hours, the consequences would have been unimaginable," a parent said.
Protests
Local Congress and BJP workers also held demonstrations, alleging that "large-scale corruption and unscientific construction" led to the collapse.
They blocked officials of the construction firm that built the hall two years ago using MLA funds.
"If there were no holiday, what would have happened?" a protester asked while speaking to a television channel.
The incident took place a day after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan directed officials to submit a list of dilapidated school and hospital buildings across the State.

40 Years On, School Friends Rekindle Bonds and Give Back to Alma Mater
Mangaluru: It was a walk down memory lane for the 1985 batch of Victoria Ladyhill High School, as 25-year-old students reunited on a Sunday to celebrate 40 years since their school days. Held on the very campus that shaped their youth, the reunion overflowed with emotion, gratitude, and a strong sense of purpose. The idea took shape when Dr Zeena Flavia Dsouza, Associate Professor of Commerce at St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), posted a message in their alumni group. 'We realised it had been four decades. The response was instant,' she said. They even designed their T-shirt emblazoned with 'Victorians' on the chest and Batch of 1985 on the back, which they wore throughout the event and have pledged to preserve it. Spearheaded by Dr Madhavi, an ophthalmologist from Vijayawada and the group's former school pupil leader, the reunion drew classmates from across the country and overseas — including Dr Poornima Nair, a well-known gynaecologist in Mangaluru; Supriya D'Souza from Muscat; Charlotte Pinto from Dubai; Ashritha Moras from Goa; and Shanteri from Cochin. "One of us, Swaroopa Shetty, has even become a State General Secretary of the Congress party, and most of us are working in different fields," Zeena said. As part of their reunion, the alumni planted 40 saplings on a green patch of the school's hilltop campus, specially earmarked by the current headmistress, Sister Pushpa. The planting was guided by Jeet Milan Roche, Mangaluru's well-known environmentalist, fondly known as the 'tree man'. These trees now stand as a living memorial to their bond and commitment to sustainability. In a show of support for future students, the batch also donated a sizable fund to the school's fund for underprivileged students — aimed at reducing dropouts and fostering inclusivity. A special 'Guruvandana' honoured beloved teachers, including 81-year-old Anusuya, a teacher who briefly stepped back into her role as a biology teacher and drew figures from the biology lessons, even grilling her students on the various parts of a hibiscus flower, recalled one of the ladies. The day ended with laughter, shared memories, and a deep sense of reconnection — proof that some friendships, like the trees they planted, only grow stronger with time.

Living tribute: Karipur air crash survivors fund hosp for local rescuers
Kozhikode: As the Karipur Air India Express (IX-1344) flight crash marks its fifth anniversary Thursday, its survivors have come together to pay a heartfelt tribute to the local residents who risked their lives to rescue them from the wreckage that night. They have funded a new building for the Nediyiruppu family health centre located near the airport from the compensation they received. The ill-fated flight from Dubai had overshot the runway at Calicut International Airport and fell into a gorge, breaking into three pieces, on Aug 7, 2020. The crash claimed 21 lives, and 165 passengers were injured, 90 of them seriously. The flight, part of the Vande Bharat repatriation mission, carried 184 passengers and six crew, including two pilots. Amid heavy rain and Covid-19 containment zone restrictions, people from Palakkapparambu, Mukoodu, Chirayil and Tharayittal in the locality sprang into action, risking their safety to rescue those trapped in the broken fuselage with fuel leaking from both wing tanks. Their swift, selfless efforts helped save many lives. The centre is located close to NH hamlet, one of Kerala's largest scheduled caste hamlets. The MDF Flight Crash 2020 Charity Foundation raised funds for the project and oversaw its construction. Foundation patron and Kondotty MLA T V Ibrahim said chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan would inaugurate the building in Sept. Opposition leader V D Satheesan will be the chief guest. "It is a tribute to the residents who saved many lives. I am yet to identify the two persons who pulled me out of the wreckage. I was lying there in a semiconscious state, but I can remember from their language that they were Kondotty natives. It was the peak of the Covid pandemic, and even deaths were being reported. They rushed to the wreckage and completed the evacuation of the injured within two hours. We owe our lives to them; we wanted to do something for the community, something that will benefit them in the long term," said Noufal, a survivor from Wayanad who suffered serious injuries in the crash. Foundation general convenor Abdurahman Edakkuni said the Karipur Flight Accident Action Council's efforts to bring the affected on a single platform and provide legal assistance to them helped secure a substantial compensation ranging from Rs 12 lakh to Rs 7.5 crore. "The plane, broken into three pieces, could have exploded at any moment. Senior officials had warned about this, but the residents, who were the first responders, ignored the risks to rescue the injured," said K Abdul Rahim Chiral, general secretary of the foundation. Edakkuni said of the 165 injured in the crash, 65 persons have not yet fully recovered and they require follow-up treatment and hospital visits. The survivors have contributed Rs 25,000 to Rs 1 lakh each for the initiative. The foundation stone for the new building was laid on the third anniversary of the crash.
