Local high school student named Iowa state poetry champion, advances to nationals
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A local high school student has been crowned the state champion in poetry.
Emma Oleson from Sioux City North High School was named the 2025 Poetry Out Loud Iowa State Champion during the state finals on March 9 in Des Moines.
Kids under 16 no longer allowed at Southern Hills Mall unsupervised
The Iowa Economic Development and Finance Authority's Iowa Arts & Culture Facebook page said Oleson earned $200 for her school and an all-expenses-paid trip to compete in the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington, D.C, on May 5-7.
This year is the 20th anniversary of the Poetry Out Loud program in Iowa. The arts education program encourages students in grades 9th through 12th to study poetry and compete in a recitation competition at local, state and national levels.

SHELDON, Iowa (KCAU) — Ready for music festivals this summer? For Christian music-lovers, there's a music festival coming to Sheldon, Iowa. RiseFest, this year, is June 20 and 21. ‘Local Perspectives' returns to Sioux City Art Center
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — The Sioux City Art Center is now taking submissions for Local Perspectives. All artists 18 years and older who live within 75 miles of Sioux City are welcome to submit their art. Each artist can submit up to three artworks, which can be either 2D or 3D. Each place will receive $500, $300, and $200. According to the Local Perspectives website, Local Perspectives is the 'longest running juried exhibition featuring Siouxland's creative communities.' This year, the collection will be on view October 2, 2025, through February 9, 2026. The deadline for entries is July 28, with final decisions made on August 22. The exhibit will be installed in the JET Gallery located on the third floor of the Art Center and juried by Sioux City Art Center Curator Christopher Atkins. Sioux City Art Center to host opening reception for new art exhibition
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — The Sioux City Art Center will host an opening reception for a new art exhibition. The display comes from Iowa-born, Rhode Island-based artist Duane Slick. It is titled 'A Certain Cadence of Night,' and includes new and recent paintings, silkscreen prints, and a video installation produced in collaboration with Martin Smick. Puzzles, games, D&D: Sioux City Public Library hosting youth, adult reading programs Slick has served as the Professor of Painting and Printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design since 1995. He earned his BFA in Painting from the University of Northern Iowa and his MFA in Painting from the University of California, Davis. The opening reception is set for 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 12. At 6 p.m., the artist will give a talk in the Art Center's Lecture Hall. The event is free to attend and open to the public. The exhibition will remain on display during the Art Center's normal business hours through Sunday, October 12.
