Guardians look to start new streak vs. Rockies
No rest is in store, however, as the Guardians host the Colorado Rockies in a three-game set beginning Monday.
Cleveland right-hander Slade Cecconi (5-4, 3.76 ERA) takes on Colorado righty Bradley Blalock (1-2, 8.67), seeking to pull his team back to .500 on the season.
"This is a tough stretch, coming out of the All-Star break and a quick trip to Kansas City, then going back home," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. "But we'll be ready to go."
Cecconi has only faced the Rockies once, working four innings and allowing two earned runs in a no-decision while with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2023. He went 2-8 in two seasons with Arizona before his turnaround in 2025.
The third-year major leaguer has been consistently solid over his last four starts, pitching at least six innings in each. Cecconi is 2-1 with a 3.95 ERA since July 4, going a career-high 8 1/3 innings in a win over the Athletics on July 18.
"There are a lot of firsts happening for me this year, which is awesome," Cecconi said. "I think I did everything I could to take care of my body to prepare. Sometimes you throw a little bit less (between starts) or do a little bit less work physically to get your body ready. It's all something to learn from."
There is no time to waste as the Guardians fell 3 1/2 games behind in the race for the final AL wild-card spot, currently shared by the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers. There are 57 games remaining, the next three against the team with the worst record in baseball.
"It's too far out to be looking at that," Cleveland designated hitter David Fry said. "We just have to show up every day and move on, regardless of results. Just keep our head down and try to win every game we can."
The Rockies played some of their best baseball this year last week, winning two straight over the St. Louis Cardinals and their series opener in Baltimore. The bottom fell out the last two days, however, as the Orioles blasted them 18-0 and 5-1.
With an overall record of 27-78, Colorado appreciates any positives it can achieve.
First baseman Warming Bernabel, who made his big-league debut Saturday, provided one Sunday when he belted his initial homer. The solo shot made the 23-year-old from Bani in the Dominican Republic 2-for-6 in two games.
"Any time you can get a guy with his first homer, it's a good day," Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer said. "Really happy for him. That's cool. The guys all loved it, too."
Bernabel batted .301 in 75 games with Triple-A Albuquerque to earn the promotion. He now will share the ballpark with perhaps the most famous Bani product in the majors, seven-time All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez of the Guardians.
"It's a dream come true, something I've dreamt about since I was little," Bernabel said through an interpreter. "Once the game starts, I think every ball is going to be hit to me. That's my mindset."
Blalock is coming off a win over the St. Louis Cardinals last Tuesday when he gave up two runs in 5 1/3 innings. He pitches to contact, only striking out one across both of his last two starts, but has a 2.45 ERA in them.
This will be Blalock's first appearance against Cleveland.

‘Not funny': Sex toy tossed on WNBA court for second time this week
A sex toy was tossed onto the court during a WNBA game for the second time this week. Video showed the sex toy out of bounds under a basket after a whistle was blown to stop play during the third quarter of the Golden State Valkyries' 73-66 victory over the Chicago Sky. An official then kicked it aside before it was picked up and removed. 'It's super disrespectful,' Sky center Elizabeth Williams said in the postgame press conference. 'I don't really get the point of it. It's really immature. Whoever is doing it needs to grow up.' A similar incident occurred Tuesday during the Valkyries' 77-75 victory over the Atlanta Dream in College Park, Georgia. Weird but true 🧐: The Golden State Valkyries 🟣⚫️⚔️ are now 2-0 when a bein green dildo has been thrown on the court 'I mean, first of all, it was super dangerous,' Valkyries forward Cecilia Zandalasini said after Tuesday's game. 'And then when we found out what it was, I guess we just started laughing. I've never seen anything like that. I'm just glad we worked through that situation. We stayed locked in, we stayed concentrated.' New York Liberty forward Isabelle Harrison commented on social media about the situation Friday. 'ARENA SECURITY?! Hello??!' Harrison said on X. 'Please do better. It's not funny. Never was funny. Throwing ANYTHING on the court is so dangerous.' Among the other players to address the safety risk was Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who said: 'stop throwing dildos on the court… you're going to hurt one of us.'

Nick Pivetta deals, new-look Padres beat the Cardinals
August 2 - Nick Pivetta allowed just one hit in seven innings and Jackson Merrill capped a four-run fifth inning with a two-run single as the San Diego Padres beat the visiting St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 for their sixth straight win Friday night. Pivetta (11-3) improved to 7-0 at Petco Park this season, walking none and striking out five as he lowered his earned run average to 2.73. New acquisition Mason Miller pitched a scoreless eighth and MLB saves leader Robert Suarez worked the ninth for his 31st save in 35 chances. Matthew Liberatore (6-9) matched Pivetta pitch-for-pitch for four innings and even got a 1-0 lead when Willson Contreras cracked his 15th homer of the year to start the top of the fifth. Contreras jumped on a fastball down the middle and launched it an estimated 398 feet to the seats in left-center. But San Diego took advantage of shaky defense to crack the code in its half of the fifth. After Jake Cronenworth walked with one out, Jose Iglesias' slow roller to third became two errors and a run. Nolan Gorman's wild throw to first was worth two bases and Contreras' inaccurate heave to third cashed Cronenworth in. Elias Diaz looped an RBI single to left-center for the go-ahead run. Fernando Tatis Jr. worked a walk and Luis Arraez singled to fill the bases. Reliever Matt Svanson fanned Manny Machado but Merrill laced a cutter into center field that scored Diaz and Tatis. Liberatore was charged with all four runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings. He fanned one. St. Louis welcomed Miller to his new team with consecutive singles by Masyn Winn and Nolan Gorman. But Miller whiffed Jordan Walker with a 101 mph fastball and then induced a double play ball off Yohel Pozo's bat. Ramon Laureano and Ryan O'Hearn, who were also acquired on a busy Thursday by the Padres, debuted on Friday. Laureano played in left field and went 0-for-4, while O'Hearn pinch-hit in the sixth. He was hit by a pitch and lined out in his two plate appearances. --Field Level Media

Dallas Cowboys star Micah Parsons demands trade: ‘I no longer want to be here'
Superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons requested a trade on Friday, declaring on social media that 'I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys.' Parsons, 26, has not been taking part in on-field activities at training camp while seeking a long-term extension that would make him one of the league's highest-paid defensive players. The Athletic reported earlier Friday that the team and the two-time All-Pro are still 'far apart' with their contract numbers. Of course, Parsons could be bluffing to force the Cowboys' hand, but the language in his lengthy post Friday on X clearly communicated his frustration. Thank you Dallas 🦁👑 🙏🏾! I 'Yes I wanted to be here. I did everything I could to show that I wanted to be a Cowboys and wear the star on my helmet,' Parsons wrote. '... Unfortunately I no longer want to be here. I no longer want to be held to close door negotiations without my agent present. I no longer want shots taken at me for getting injured while laying it on the line for the organization our fans and my teammates. I no longer want narratives created and spread to the media about me.' Parsons said his attempts to discuss an extension started after the 2023 season but have repeatedly been met by 'radio silence' from the Cowboys. 'Up to today the team has not had a single conversation with my agent about a contract,' Parsons wrote. 'Not one demand has been made by my agent about money, years or anything else. 'Still I stayed quiet but again after repeated shots at myself and all the narratives I have made a tough decision I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys. My trade request has been submitted to Stephen Jones personally.' Parsons is scheduled to earn $24m this season on his fifth-year option. The 2021 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year has recorded double-digit sacks in each of his first four seasons and has watched the market for pass rushers explode. Defensive end Myles Garrett signed a four-year, $160m extension with the Cleveland Browns. Maxx Crosby inked a three-year, $106.5m extension with the Las Vegas Raiders. TJ Watt's extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers was for three years and $123m. A Parsons extension likely would be in the same ballpark – or more. Per the Athletic, Parsons and team owner Jerry Jones talked directly in the spring, and the Cowboys believe those conversations were negotiations with a deal for an extension in place. The Parsons' camp instead portrayed the meetings as talks and not negotiations, and that the Cowboys have declined to negotiate with his agent because team officials believed an agreement already was in place. Speaking in April at the NFL's annual league meeting, Jones acknowledged his conversation with Parsons, saying the two spoke for 'five or six hours' to work out a long-term extension. 'Most of the issues we are in agreement on. We discussed it all,' Jones said April 1. 'But we obviously don't have an agreement relative to the new contract.' The Dallas Morning News reported in March that Parsons was seeking a record- setting $200m contract extension that would make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. Parsons recorded 12 sacks, 43 tackles and two forced fumbles in 13 games (all starts) last season. A Pro Bowl selection in each of his first four seasons in the league, Parsons has totaled 256 tackles (63 for loss), 112 quarterback hits, 52.5 sacks, nine forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries in 63 career games (all starts).
