Cleveland asks judge to halt all work on new Browns stadium in Brook Park

NBC Sports15-07-2025
Cleveland had hoped to use The Art Modell Law to keep the Browns from leaving downtown for Brook Park. With Ohio changing the Modell law to allow an in-state move, the Browns had to move to Plan B.
Via Adam Ferrise of Cleveland.com, Cleveland wants to halt all efforts to build a new stadium based on the terms of the team's current lease.
On the surface, its no issue. The lease runs through 2028. The Browns, in theory, are free to play elsewhere as of 2029.
At a deeper level, it's more complicated. The question is whether and to what extent the Browns may take affirmative steps to line up a new home before the lease expires.
The city wants a court order preventing the Browns from doing anything in connection with the building of a new team until the lease ends — from funding to permitting to construction and beyond. The city also wants the Browns to be prevented from accepting money 'from any source' or to even 'carry out any negotiations for it.'
The lawsuit, if successful, would essentially force the Browns to spend multiple lame-duck years in Cleveland without a long-term deal, while they get their new stadium built in Brook Park.
It may be simply a leverage play aimed at striking a deal. A simple one, like the Browns agreeing to help pay for the demolition of the current stadium once the new one is open.

'Not Smart': Browns GM Didn't Hold Back On Shedeur Sanders

'Not Smart': Browns GM Didn't Hold Back On Shedeur Sanders originally appeared on The Spun. With all eyes on Shedeur Sanders following his fifth-round draft slide the last thing the former Colorado star could afford to do was have a slip-up. But two speeding tickets later, the son of the Hall of Famer is already getting called out by his team's general manager. Part of Sanders' draft slide had to do with questions about his maturity — which weren't exactly helped by his two very public citations. And that led to Browns GM Andrew Berry having to answer questions about his rookie quarterback at the start of Cleveland's training camp. "Not smart. That's just not smart," Berry told reporters Thursday. "It's something that we have addressed with him. He understands the implications. He understands the consequences." "I think the thing is it's not just about yourself. ... It's not just about driving your car real fast. It's about the fact that you endanger other people," he added. "It's about the fact that if a deer or someone cuts out in front of you like your reaction time." "It's just dangerous, and it's not something that we want our guys to be doing. It's not something that they should be doing," Berry concluded. "The No. 1 reason is because we don't want some catastrophic accident." Sanders was caught going 91 MPH in a 65 MPH zone and 101 MPH in a 60 MPH zone last month — which simply can't happen as the potential face of a franchise. "He knows this and all of our rookies know this: They need to make sure that they're being safe and that can be whether they're behind the wheel of a car or they're in and around town," head coach Kevin Stefanski said, via "They need to make really good decisions, so that they're safe."'Not Smart': Browns GM Didn't Hold Back On Shedeur Sanders first appeared on The Spun on Jul 26, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 26, 2025, where it first appeared.

Browns release former $19 million free agent signing

The post Browns release former $19 million free agent signing appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Cleveland Browns finally have some hope for the future. Cleveland locked up Myles Garrett on a long-term contract and acquired an additional 2026 first-round pick this offseason. Now the Browns are moving on from one player they had high hopes for just a few seasons ago. The Browns have released edge rusher Ogbo Okoronkwo, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. In a corresponding move, the Browns signed kicker Andre Szmyt. Cleveland signed Okoronkwo to a three-year, $19 million contract back in 2023. Okoronkwo had a breakout season in 2022 with the Texans, logging 44 total tackles and five sacks. There was plenty of optimism that Okoronkwo could blossom in Cleveland, especially while playing next to superstar Myles Garrett. While Ogbo did not take his career to the next level in Cleveland, he was a solid rotational player. He put up 31 total tackle with four-and-a-half sacks in 2023 and 23 total tackles with three sacks in 2024. Okoronkwo largely played a rotational role behind Garrett and Za'Darius Smith until the Browns traded him at the deadline last season. With Okoronkwo released, the Browns will turn to Isaiah McGuire and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka to shore up the edge rusher spot opposite of Garrett. Meanwhile, Szmyt will compete with veteran Dustin Hopkins at kicker during Browns training camp next month. Diontae Johnson makes bold starting QB prediction ahead of Browns training camp The Browns will have more than just a kicker battle at training camp. Cleveland has to sort through its four healthy quarterbacks to determine who will be the team's starter heading into the regular season. Browns wide receiver Diontae Johnson made a bold prediction about who will win that battle in a recent interview. 'I think they are going to roll with Kenny (Pickett) for right now,' Johnson said. 'I've been seeing Kenny going like right now with the ones. Then Joe (Flacco) will come in. I think they are probably going to roll with him just to see like he's coming off a season with Philly and having a Super Bowl. So, I think they are going to stick with him through the preseason. Then you know they can live with Joe and what he brings to the table.' Johnson's predictions feels like one of the more likely outcomes for Cleveland's training camp battle. Rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders are of course part of the competition too. But they face an uphill battle against established NFL quarterbacks, which is no easy feat for any rookie. It will be exciting to see who gets the early snaps at Browns training camp, which kicks off in late July. Cleveland Browns May Have Their Next Baker Mayfield

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Cleveland Browns have four quarterbacks on their roster competing for the starting job. Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders are all fighting for playing time with training camp now underway. For a long time, the Browns have been desperately searching for a long-term franchise quarterback. Sadly, they probably had that guy on the roster in the form of Baker Mayfield, but they ran out of patience with him and moved on. Since moving on from Mayfield, the former No. 1 overall pick has become a star with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. All Cleveland can do is watch him succeed with the Buccaneers and think about what could have been. Read more: Vikings' Justin Jefferson Makes His Feelings Known About JJ McCarthy Right now, Flacco is widely expected to be the Week 1 starting quarterback with Pickett being viewed as the No. 2. That could change throughout training camp and preseason action. During an appearance speaking with the "Cleveland's Talking Heads" show, cornerback Greg Newsome spoke out about his belief that Pickett has a lot of Mayfield in his game. "He's always been one of my favorite guys to compete against. He's a guy that reminds me of that tenacity that Baker had," Newsome said. "Trying to go at you, he's gonna talk some trash with you, and just an ultimate competitor. He does whatever the offense needs from him to win." Pickett was originally the No. 20 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has played three years in the NFL thus far with mixed results. He has also run for 306 yards and five more scores. At just 27 years old, Pickett could be a long-term option for Cleveland if he proves he can be a starter for the franchise. The Browns badly need someone to step up and take over the reigns under center. Expect to see the quarterback competition pick up in the coming days. Pickett will keep fighting for time and is clearly making an impact on his teammates. For more Cleveland Browns and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
