Sajid Khan says Bollywood only has lead actors, not heroes: ‘Hero ke mayne sirf South mein hain'

Hindustan Times10-05-2025

Filmmaker Sajid Khan, known for making films like Heyy Babyy, Housefull, Himmatwala, Hamshakals and more, recently appeared in a conversation with comedian Bharti Singh and her husband, writer Haarsh Limbachiyaa on their YouTube channel Bharti TV. During the chat, he spoke about how there are no longer 'heroes' in Bollywood—just lead actors. (Also Read: Exclusive| Sajid Khan: I have thought of ending my life many times in the last six years)
While discussing the lifestyle of heroes in earlier times, Sajid said they lived a luxurious and fun life. He then explained why there are no real heroes in Bollywood today and said, "Hero nahi hai aaj ki date mein. Leads hain. Hero bhut kum hote hain. Jo pehle heroes the ab leads hain. Ab koi bhi picture kar sakta hai. Because hero ki mayne bhut kum hote hain. Hero ke mayne sirf South mein bacche hain. Tabhi unki entry dhamakedaar hoti hai. Isliye voh film mein kabhi kuch aisa step nahi utha sakte jo galat hoga society ke liye kyunki voh hero hai. That's why we haven't ever heard the word superlead, but superhero. Hero bhut kum bache hain humare pass (There are no heroes in today's time. There are leads. Heroes are very few. The ones who used to be heroes are now just leads. Nowadays, anyone can do a film because the value of a hero has diminished. The concept of a hero only really remains in the South. That's why their entry is so grand. That's also why they can never take a step in a film that would be wrong for society, because they are heroes. That's why we've never heard the term 'super-lead', only 'superhero'. We have very few real heroes left with us)."
He further explained that actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Jeetendra and Mithun Chakraborty were heroes, even when they occasionally played negative or offbeat characters. He called them true crowd-pullers.
When Bharti mentioned how today's actors focus on gym workouts for a good physique, Sajid said, "Earlier heroes didn't need a good body. Vinod Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan didn't have a good physique, but the anger was in their eyes—the action was in the eyes, not in the thighs. Salman Khan brought the craze of bodybuilding to Bollywood. People were shocked to see his six-pack abs in Maine Pyaar Kiya's first poster. But he didn't become a hero because of the six-pack abs. Now it has become common. Now it's mandatory to have six-packs. Intensity should be in the eyes."
He went on to give examples of actors like Ranbir Kapoor, who trained extensively to build a certain physique for Animal. However, he added that even if Ranbir hadn't done so, the film would still have been a hit because the anger needed for the role was in his eyes. He also cited Sunny Deol's physique in Gadar 2 as a 'desi body'—not gym-sculpted, but still powerful and convincing in action scenes.
Sajid is a popular filmmaker and the brother of filmmaker-choreographer Farah Khan. He made his directorial debut with the 2006 film Darna Zaroori Hai, which featured Amitabh Bachchan, Suniel Shetty, Anil Kapoor and others. He then delivered three back-to-back hits with Heyy Babyy (2007), his first full-length film, Housefull and Housefull 2. However, his next two films—Himmatwala and Hamshakals—performed poorly at the box office. Since then, he has been away from direction. He was last seen as a participant in Salman Khan's reality show Bigg Boss 16.

Housefull 5A & 5B: Discover the two epic endings of Akshay Kumar's film – which one will you choose?

Akshay Kumar returns to comedy, but in a new avatar with Housefull 5. But how you ask? Because the new instalment of the Housefull franchise is a murder mystery this time. The twist doesn't end here. Released on June 6, the film comes with not one, but two different endings -something different for the audience this time. Released as Housefull 5A and Housefull 5B, each version offers a different climax with a different killer; a double dose of fun, chaos, and confusion. So, which one is the right pick for you? Housefull 5 sets sail on a luxury cruise where a billionaire celebrates his birthday. But the fun takes a deadly turn when the birthday boy (played by Ranjeet) is mysteriously found dead, right after declaring he'll leave his fortune to someone named Jolly. The catch? There are three Jollys on the ship—played by Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, and Abhishek Bachchan—and all three, along with their glamorous girlfriends (played by Jacqueline Fernandez, Sonam Bajwa, and Nargis Fakhri respectively), land on the suspect list. Blending mindless comedy with the franchise's signature spirit, the film comes in two versions. Each one has a different killer and alternate ending, elevating viewers' experience. While the first two hours of Housefull 5A and Housefull 5B remain the same, it's the last 20 minutes which sets the climax apart. Reportedly, both versions of the film are getting nearly equal screen space at theatres. Most multiplexes seem to be running two shows each of Housefull 5A and 5B per screen. The film is majorly clashing with Kamal Haasan's Thug Life, which was released in theatres on June 5. Going by online reviews from fans and critics, Housefull 5 has received a mixed response. Talking about Housefull 5A, a user wrote on X, formerly Twitter, 'Housefull 5A is my favourite film this year! Redefining the limits of cinema. Proud to have seen this piece of art. Can literally not imagine how they made it, it is insane that so much money was invested to pull this off. Now give me my money back.' 'Just watched #Housefull5A and it's literally a house full of laughter, madness, and non-stop fun,' added another. After watching Housefull 5B, one more wrote in an impromptu review: 'I watched #Housefull5B. It's so good. Khiladi back on his way.' 'Some insights on #Housefull5 A and #Housefull5 B. A is more of a comedy, with a light-hearted climax presented in comic way. B follows a Darker tone and ends with a serious climax (sic).' Previously, Akshay Kumar had advised viewers to watch the film two times, one version each time for better understanding. The idea of having two different climaxes is said to be a fun strategy to maximise profits. It may also boost footfall in the theatres. At the trailer launch of Housefull 5, producer Sajid Nadiadwala had said that a film with two different endings was something that hadn't 'happened anywhere else in the world'. He added that he had been toying with the idea for the last 30 years. "I've written a story [Housefull] where every theatre will have a different killer. So, if you watch it at Gaiety, it'll have one killer. If you watch it at Galaxy, there'll be another. In PVR screen number 4, you'll see a different killer, and in PVR screen number 5, yet another one. It's like every time you watch the film, you'll get a different ending," he had said. Housefull 5 is directed by Tarun Mansukhani. It stars Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Fardeen Khan, Nana Patekar, Jackie Shroff, Ranjeet, Johny Lever, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nargis Fakhri, Chunky Panday, Dino Morea, Sonam Bajwa, and Soundarya Sharma. The film marks one of the widest releases in Akshay Kumar's career, with 5,000 screens nationwide.

‘Mere paas janta hai': How Bollywood and Hindi are powering Mira Nair's son Zohran Mamdani's run for NYC mayor

Zohran Mamdani, a New York State Assembly member and Democratic mayoral candidate, has turned to Bollywood to fire up his campaign for the city's mayoral race, and is doing it using the lingua franca of those of South Asian descent – Hinglish. In a video posted on social media, Mamdani—who could become the first South Asian mayor of New York City—invokes the cinematic legacy of Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Kishore Kumar to challenge front-runner Andrew Cuomo, in a campaign message that feels more like a film trailer than a typical political ad. It is quite fitting as he is the son of acclaimed Indian filmmaker Mira Nair, who has directed internationally acclaimed films such as Monsoon Wedding and The Namesake. The background music is Deewanagi Deewangi from the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Om Shanti Om. The video opens with a scene from Deewar (1975), where Amitabh Bachchan, playing the hardened Vijay, faces off with his idealistic brother Ravi (Shashi Kapoor). In the original, Vijay boasts: 'Aaj mere paas buildingein hain, property hai, bangla hai, bank balance hai, gaadi hai. Tumhare paas kya hai? ('Today I have buildings, property, a bungalow, a bank balance, and a car. What do you have?' The video cuts before Shashi Kapoor can reply. Instead, Mamdani appears on screen, arms stretched wide in Shah Rukh Khan's signature pose—his answer: 'Main paas janta hai' (I have the people). His campaign weaves Bollywood nostalgia into political messaging. The iconic scene from Amitabh Bachchan's Deewar, a symbol of class conflict and moral divide in Hindi cinema, is reimagined for American politics for his immigrant voter base. And the SRK pose—made famous in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and repeated across his filmography, makes him instantly relatable. Billionaires ke paas already sab kuchh hai. Ab, aapka time aageya. Billionaires already have everything. Now, your time has come. — Zohran Kwame Mamdani (@ZohranKMamdani) June 4, 2025 Using Kishore Kumar's voice from the film Karz (1980), Mamdani introduces the idea of ranked-choice voting with a clever twist: 'Hey, have you ever voted for anyone? Have you ever ranked anyone?'—a playful but pointed question to New York's multilingual electorate. He also uses the beloved summer beverage, lassi (buttermilk), to explain rank-based voting. Urging the electorate not to vote for Cuomo, whom he marks as his primary adversary, he uses the lyrics: 'Khana milega pina milega bhaiya ki shadi hai sab kuch milega' to subtly send home the message that while Donald Trump-backed candidate may offer freebees, real change will be elusive. This is followed by the line: 'Billionaires already have everything. Now your time has come.' In yet another nod to classic Hindi cinema, Mamdani invokes the phrase 'Roti, Kapda aur Makaan', the title of the 1974 Manoj Kumar film, to drive home the election plank of basic affordability, a key theme of his campaign. The video presents a stark contrast between Mamdani's populist pitch and Cuomo's elite image. Though Mamdani is speaking to New Yorkers, the language, music, and imagery are unmistakably Indian. After all, his target electorate comprises South Asian immigrants, first-generation voters, and working-class communities who might not see themselves in typical political campaigns. The election will take place on June 24.

This trend may shift with the release of Housefull 5 on Friday, as multiplex chains anticipate a rise in footfalls and occupancy levels, projected to range between 40 and 60 per cent compared to traditional releases. The optimism follows an announcement by Sajid Nadiadwala, one of the producers of the fifth instalment in the Housefull franchise, that the murder mystery comedy will feature two different endings, each revealing a different killer.
