Retail growth ‘fizzled out' last month, analysts find

Three months of growth in the Scottish retail sector 'fizzled out' in June, analysts have found.
Total sales in Scotland decreased by 0.4% compared to June 2024, where they had also decreased by 3.4%, according to the Scottish Retail Sales Monitor.
The Scottish Retail Consortium-KPMG analysis found the figure was well below the three-month average increase of 1.2%, and below the 12-month average rise of 0.1%.
Adjusted for inflation, there was a year-on-year decrease of 0.8%.
Food sales fell by 2.3% last month compared to the same time last year, when they had also decreased by 1.7%.
Total non-food sales rose by 1.1% compared to June last year, when they decreased 4.8%.
Adjusted for the effect of online sales, non-food sales rose by 2.1% in June.
David Lonsdale, director of the SRC, said: 'Three consecutive months of growth in Scottish retail sales unfortunately fizzled out in June.
'Retail sales contracted by 0.4% during the month when compared with the same trading period the year before.
'This was perhaps less than surprising after the slump in shopper footfall in June, and with households continuing to prioritise experiences, such as holidays and concert-going rather than purchases of products.'
Mr Lonsdale said the sale of gaming consoles and electric fans performed well amid new releases and sunny weather, while grocery sales declined and the sale of outdoor furniture and DIY equipment slowed, after a strong month in May.
He added: ' Households are having to contend with a multitude of pressures which is seeing them spend selectively.
'Council tax and water bills have soared, inflation is increasing, and shop prices have started to rise.
'All this is putting a dampener on disposable spending.
'Hopefully this downturn in sales will prove temporary as retailers themselves grapple with a hotchpotch of cost pressures of their own, ranging from higher statutory costs for employing people to higher business rates and new levies on packaging.'
Linda Ellett, UK head of consumer, retail and leisure at KPMG, said: 'Non-food purchases saw modest growth in Scotland in June as consumers took advantage of summer promotions to buy home appliances and homeware goods, while the weather aided clothing sales.
'But a fall in food and drink spending saw monthly Scottish retail sales slightly down overall.
'Retailers will be hoping that the summer buying is not yet complete and that the pace picks up further in July and August as suitcases get packed and the sun hopefully keeps shining.'

Next has upped its annual sales and profit outlook once again after better-than-expected trading thanks to hot weather and disruption at cyber attack struck rival Marks & Spencer. The womenswear and homewares chain posted a 10.5% rise in full-price sales for the second quarter to July 26, with growth of 10.9% for the half-year as a whole. In the UK, sales jumped by 7.8% in the second quarter as the group said it was boosted by 'better than expected weather and trading disruption at a major competitor'. M&S had to suspend online trading for nearly two months from mid-April after it was hit by a major hack. Next said the recent performance and forecasts for better-than-forecast second half trading means it now expects full-year sales to rise by 7.5% and for profits to increase by 9.3% to £1.11 billion. It had previously pencilled in sales growth of 6% and for profits to lift by 6.8%. The upgrade marks the group's third in just five months. But Next said it 'remains cautious for the second half', stressing that the improved outlook is for its international arm over the next six months. It said: 'In the UK, we believe we exceeded expectations in the second quarter as a result of better summer weather and trading disruption at a major competitor. 'We do not expect either of these factors to have a material effect in the second half, and so we are not increasing our guidance for UK sales in the second half.' It believes sales growth in the UK will slow sharply to 1.9% as the jobs market starts to falter following the Government's move to hike National Insurance contributions for employers, at the same time as rising the minimum wage. Next said: 'We expect UK employment opportunities to continue to diminish as we enter the second half, with the effects of April's National Insurance changes continuing to filter through into the economy as the year progresses. 'We believe that this will increasingly dampen consumer spending as the year progresses.' But an online marketing push for its international arm is bearing fruit, helping drive sales 28.1% higher in the first half and with growth of 19.4% now expected in the final six months. The results come after Next announced late on Wednesday that it had bought Seraphine – the maternity fashion firm, whose clothes were worn by the Princess of Wales during her pregnancies – after it recently collapsed into administration. Next paid £600,000 for the brand and announced it was bringing back Seraphine's founder Cecile Reinaud as an adviser to help relaunch the fashion label.

Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari boss, Fred Vasseur, has signed a new multi-year deal with the Italian Formula One team. Vasseur's position has been under scrutiny this season with Ferrari yet to land a single win outside of Hamilton's sprint victory in China in March. Former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has even been linked with the job since he was ousted earlier this month. However, in a statement released ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix – the concluding round before the summer break – Ferrari said in a statement: 'Scuderia Ferrari HP is pleased to announce that it has extended, with a multiple-year contract, its agreement with Fred Vasseur, who will continue as team principal for the coming Formula One seasons. 'Fred joined the Scuderia at the beginning of 2023, bringing with him extensive motorsport experience and a proven ability to develop talent and build competitive teams across all levels of racing. Since then, he has laid a solid foundation with the ambition of returning Ferrari to the top of Formula One. 'Renewing Fred's contract reflects Ferrari's determination to build on the foundations laid so far. His ability to lead under pressure, embrace innovation, and pursue performance aligns fully with Ferrari's values and long-term ambitions. 'Under Fred's leadership, Scuderia Ferrari HP is united, focused, and committed to continuous improvement. Since his transfer from Mercedes, Hamilton has not landed a grand prix podium in Ferrari colours – a streak of 13 races – the deepest into the season he has ever gone without a top-three finish. He is sixth in the standings, 157 points off the championship pace and 30 points behind team-mate Charles Leclerc. Ferrari are second in the constructors' standings. Hamilton said at last week's round in Belgium that he had staged meetings with all of Ferrari's key figures – including chairman John Elkann, CEO Benedetto Vigna and Vasseur – and submitted two documents outlining his vision as to why the Italian giants are not up to speed. Ferrari's last world drivers' title came in 2007, with their most recent constructors' crown the following year. Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland are all having issues, according to reports on outage monitor Downdetector. 1 Some 780 people have reported issues with Lloyds, while 402 reports have been made about Halifax. Bank of Scotland, which has fewer customers, peaked at 73 reports. Most people are reporting problems with their mobile banking apps.
