EPA celebrates Emirati culture at Rabat book fair
The annual book fair, organised by the Moroccan Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, is one of the region's most prominent literary events.
This year, Sharjah was honoured as the Guest of Honour, highlighting the strong cultural ties between the UAE and Morocco. The recognition also reflects the spirit of mutual appreciation, following Morocco's role as Guest of Honour at the Sharjah International Book Fair in 2024.
The Emirati publishing delegation participating in the book fair includes Emirati publisher Amira BuKadra, Co-Founder of Ghaf Publishing and Dr. Abdullah Al Sharhan, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Ajyal for Publishing & Distribution.
Rashid Alkous, Executive Director of EPA, expressed his pride in participating in the book fair, extending his deep gratitude to Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, founder and honorary president of the Emirates Publishers Association, for her continuous support of the Emirati publishing industry and her pioneering role in enhancing the status of Emirati books on the international stage.
He commented, "Our participation in the Rabat International Publishing and Book Fair affirms our commitment to supporting Emirati publishers and opening new doors for cultural dialogue and exchange of expertise with our partners in Morocco and the Arab world, especially with Sharjah being chosen as this year's guest of honour; a tribute that reflects the emirate's pioneering role as a global cultural centre."
He added, "The book fair represents a strategic platform for exchanging expertise and discussing challenges and opportunities in the publishing industry. We look forward to enriching cultural dialogue and supporting the sustainability efforts of independent publishers, thus contributing to the development of the Arab publishing sector as a whole."
Alkous stressed the importance of transforming such participation into sustainable platforms to expand the UAE's cultural influence.
He said, "At the Emirates Publishers Association, we work to ensure that our participation in international forums serves as an authentic outlet for cultural communication and showcases the richness of the UAE's creative scene.
"Our presence today at the Rabat International Publishing and Book Fair is a celebration of Emirati culture and the spirit of Arab cooperation, which contributes to building a prosperous future for the publishing industry in the region."
The Emirati publishing delegation will participate in a discussion session at the book fair, moderated by Rashid Al Kous, with the participation of Amira BuKadra, Dr. Abdullah Al Sharhan, Tarek Saliki, President of the Moroccan Publishers Association, and Safaa Wali Publisher at Fennec Publishing House in Casablanca.
The session will address three main topics namely, "Ways to enhance book distribution in the region', "Book pricing mechanisms and the sustainability of independent publishers', and "The role of government initiatives in supporting local writers and developing the industry.'
With this unique participation, the Emirates Publishers Association renews its unwavering commitment to empowering Emirati publishers, enhancing the UAE's position on the global publishing map, and strengthening bridges of cultural cooperation, thereby enriching the Arab and international literary scene.

The Icons Issue: Welcome To The Multiverse
Multitalented. Multifaceted. Multitudinal. This year's crop of ICONS reflects the great dynamism and diversity of a new generation of culture-shifters The word 'icon' can evoke singularity, a distinct one-of-oneness grounded in who someone is, what that person represents, and the scale of that individual's accomplishments. But while achievements can be singular, people contain multitudes. They embody a vast array of ambitions and experiences. Take the people in our Icons portfolio. Two-time Olympic-champion snowboarder Chloe Kim has redefined what athletic heroism looks like, speaking openly about her mental health and creating space for others to do the same. A prolific behind-the-scenes hitmaker, Benny Blanco has now found his own place in the spotlight, releasing an intimate and infectious collaborative album, I Said I Love You First, earlier this year with his fiancée, Selena Gomez. Stranger Things star Sadie Sink has paved the way for an even brighter future with her Tony-nominated (and fiercely intelligent) performance on Broadway in the politically charged play John Proctor Is the Villain. Artist Chase Hall uses highly symbolic materials like coffee and cotton to create textured works that reckon with history, marginalization, and his own experience growing up biracial in America. Ravyn Lenae's lush, futuristic brand of R&B mines the time-worn subject of love with stirring soulfulness. Comedian Megan Stalter brings a joyful chaos — and rich emotional depth — to Lena Dunham's new Netflix series Too Much. What unites them all is not just talent but a refusal to be limited by or reduced to any one identity, medium, or narrative. Their power is in their presence; they bring the entirety of who they are to the way they approach their work, use their platforms, and live their lives. They are the creators of new archetypes, new languages, and new paths forward — and they're inviting us all along for the ride. Chloe Kim, Snowboarder 'In the beginning, success was winning gold medals. Now it means being able to create whatever life I want for myself.' Sadie Sink, Actor 'Whether the end result is good or bad or neutral, it doesn't matter because whatever I do as an actor, I am still learning.' Benny Blanco, Producer & Songwriter 'I've just always been drawn to have fun and make stuff that feels good, and if it winds up being something that other people like, then that's cool.' Chase Hall, Artist 'I've always been a new kid at school. I've always lived in new places. … I think from a young age, visualising the world provided a sense of safety.' Ravyn Lenae, Singer & Songwriter 'I'm really interested in challenging my own idea of what R&B can be or what music in general can really feel like. ' Megan Stalter, Actor & Comedian 'It doesn't matter what something will look like if it felt the way it's supposed to… if it feels real to me, I think it feels fulfilling.' Photography: Philip-Daniel Ducasse. Styling: Gabriella Karefa-Johnson. Hair for Lenae and Stalter: Evanie Frausto for Redken. Hair for All Others: Edward Lampley for Bumble and Bumble. Makeup: Kennedy for Dior Beauty. Manicures for Lenae and Stalter: Marisa Carmichael for Essie. Manicures for All Others: Mayumi Abuku for Chanel. Grooming for Blanco: Christine Nelli for Bumble and Bumble. Casting: Anita Bitton at the Establishment. Production: Day Int. Set Design: Bette Adams.

Luxor African Film Festival opens submissions for 15th edition
Submissions are open until November 25, 2025, for films produced in 2025 that have not yet been screened in Egypt. The Luxor African Film Festival (LAFF) has officially opened submissions for its 15th edition, which will be held from March 30 to April 5, 2026, in Luxor, southern Egypt. The festival, founded by screenwriter Sayed Fouad, will once again celebrate the richness of African cinema while providing a platform for emerging and established filmmakers across the continent and the diaspora. Film entries are now being accepted across four main competitions. The Long Films Competition will showcase narrative, documentary and animated features over 60 minutes, while the Short Films Competition will highlight short-form works in the same categories. Both competitions are exclusively open to African directors. The Diaspora Films Competition invites submissions from African filmmakers living abroad whose works address Africa from a global perspective. In addition, the Youth Films Competition is dedicated to young filmmakers from the governorates of Qena and Luxor. Azza El Hosseiny, Founder and Director of LAFF, said: 'Several months before the festival, we will organise a workshop dedicated to those interested in making short films with no budget, targeting youth from Luxor and Qena. The aim is to develop their skills and give them the opportunity to become part of the Egyptian and African cinematic landscape. This initiative is not limited to offering film workshops; it also includes opening submissions for a special film competition dedicated to Luxor and Qena, with members of the jury coming from these two governorates themselves.' This edition of LAFF will also pay tribute to the late filmmaker Youssef Chahine on the centennial of his birth. Under the theme 'Youssef Chahine… An Egyptian Story,' the festival will honour his pioneering contributions to Egyptian and global cinema. Film submissions open on August 20, 2025, and close on November 25, 2025, through the festival's official website. Eligible films must have been produced in 2025 and should not have been previously screened in Egypt. Acclaimed Egyptian actor Mahmoud Hemida has been named Honorary President of the 15th edition, underscoring the festival's stature within the cultural landscape. Organised by the Independent Shabab Foundation for Support and Development, LAFF is held in partnership with Egypt's Ministries of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities, Youth and Sports, and Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with Luxor Governorate.

Miramax partners with Doha Film Institute to elevate Arabic-language storytelling
Miramax, the global film and television studio owned by beIN MEDIA GROUP (beIN) and Paramount Global, has revealed details about its partnership with Doha Film Institute (DFI) to launch the DFI x Miramax Writer's Programme. Aimed at supporting the development of premium, local Arabic-language content across the Middle East and North Africa, the programme will provide training, mentorship, and production and distribution resources for both emerging and established Arab writers. It will offer critical support for their projects, contributing to the expansion of the region's series content output, and strengthening Qatar's position as a leading media hub in the Middle East. 'At Miramax, we believe great storytelling knows no borders,' said Jonathan Glickman, CEO, Miramax. 'This partnership with DFI is a powerful step toward amplifying emerging Arabic-language voices and sharing their stories with audiences worldwide.' The DFI x Miramax Writer's Programme will involve the selection of up to five local and regional projects to develop each year. The Writer's Programme will tie into DFI's existing Series Programmes, with the goal of extending the reach and impact of these initiatives. The collaboration between Miramax, renowned for its film and television productions, and DFI, the leading film institute in the Middle East, addresses a key gap in the region's media industry by offering not only development support but also direct access to Miramax's vast distribution and sales network to reach audiences worldwide. Fatma Hassan Alremaihi, CEO of DFI said, 'At Doha Film Institute, we believe in the transformative power of storytelling to unite, inspire, and celebrate cultural identity. Our partnership with Miramax marks an exciting new chapter in championing original Arabic-language content that reflects the depth and diversity of our region. By creating compelling stories in our own voice, we not only preserve our heritage but also bring communities closer together through the universal language of cinema.' Miramax has had a standout year across both film and television, with highlights including Academy Award®-nominated The Holdovers; The Beekeeper, which grossed more than $160m worldwide; indie-hit Strange Darling; Golden Globe-nominated series The Gentlemen, which launched in March 2024, ranking #1 for three weeks on Netflix; and the fourth installment of the Bridget Jones franchise – Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, which premiered February 14, 2025. Upcoming Miramax projects include: Roofman, starring Channing Tatum, Kirsten Dunst and Peter Dinklage, set to premiere October 10, 2025, with Paramount Pictures distributing domestically and in the UK; the next installment in the Scary Movie franchise, set to premiere Summer 2026, distributed globally by Paramount Pictures, with Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans writing and producing; Colman Domingo's directorial debut Scandalous, starring Sydney Sweeney and David Jonsson; and The Faculty remake, being written by breakout talent Drew Hancock.
