Cammie the Pakistani camel walks again with prosthetic leg

Cammie, a young camel whose front leg was chopped off by a land owner in
Pakistan 's southern province of Sindh, left her carers emotional as she walked for the first time on a prosthetic leg.
'I started weeping when I saw her walking with the prosthetic leg. It was a dream come true,' Sheema Khan, the manager of an animal shelter in Karachi, said on Saturday.
Veterinarian Babar Hussain said it was the first time a large animal in Pakistan had received a prosthetic leg.
Cammie's leg was allegedly severed by a landlord in June last year as punishment for entering his field in search of fodder.

A video of the wounded camel that circulated on social media prompted swift government action.
According to the deputy commissioner of Sanghar, she was transported the very next day to Karachi, over 250km (155 miles) away, and has been living in a shelter there ever since.

Pakistan jails 8 from former PM Imran Khan's party over 2023 riots

A Pakistani anti-terrorism court sentenced eight senior members of former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party to 10 years in prison late on Tuesday over riots that targeted military sites following Khan's 2023 arrest, their lawyer said. Khan is on trial on similar charges, being tried separately. The government accuses him and other leaders of inciting the May 9, 2023, protests, during which demonstrators attacked military and government buildings, including the army headquarters in Rawalpindi and the residence of a senior commander in Lahore. The prosecution is still presenting witnesses in Khan's proceedings, and Tuesday's verdict does not directly affect his case. The sentences, issued in a prison trial in Lahore, are among a series of prosecutions involving Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Defence lawyer Burhan Moazzam said they would appeal. 'It is surprising that six people were acquitted while eight were convicted, even though they were all charged under the same allegations,' he said. The case relates to one of several incidents stemming from the May 9 unrest, involving alleged incitement during attacks near a major intersection in Lahore. Moazzam said separate trials were continuing in connection with other incidents that day.

Pakistan arrests suspect after viral video of couple shot dead in ‘honour killing'

Pakistan on Sunday arrested a suspect after a video emerged on social media of a woman and a man being shot and killed for marrying against the wishes of their families, in a so-called honour killing, police said. Advertisement The couple, who were not identified, were shot dead on the orders of a local tribal council last month in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province, according to provincial authorities who investigated after the video went viral. One of the suspects has been arrested after the location and people in the video were identified, the provincial chief minister, Sarfraz Bugti, said in a statement. A case has been registered against all those involved, he said. The video shows people in a desert, some trucks and SUVs that they had apparently driven there. The woman is given a copy of the Koran, the Muslim holy book, and she then tells a man: 'Come walk seven steps with me, after that you can shoot me.' Advertisement The man then follows her for a few steps. A local police official said the woman did not cry or seek mercy.
