Abang Johari: New mining policy by 2026 to prioritise environmental safeguards and responsible practices
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the policy would prioritise responsible mining practices that protect the geological structure of mining sites, citing Canada's advanced and sustainable mining model as an inspiration.
'For example, like in the past, we opened opencast mining where we dug but then left it alone, that's why there are mining areas that become lakes like what happened to Tasik Biru in Bau.
'But with new technology, the mining areas will not become lakes where they remain the same as before and the excavated areas will be filled back in with new methods.
'That is why we will formulate a new and different policy in the mining industry which we should see as a guide in trying our hand in the mining industry.
'We have a target, if possible by 2026 where we have a detailed policy in mining and become the basis for guiding us in managing mining activities,' he said.
Abang Johari said this when speaking at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development (MUDeNR) appreciation dinner at a leading hotel here on Friday.
He also expressed his appreciation to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, for leading a delegation to Canada to review the sustainable mining model in the country.
According to Abang Johari again, this new policy only involves mineral mining and does not include the oil and gas sector.
On a related matter, he said the Sarawak government is implementing proactive measures by amending existing laws from time to time to remain relevant and in line with current changes.
He stressed the importance of this review to ensure that state laws are not left behind, especially those related to trade, the environment and investment.
As such, he has directed the Sarawak Attorney General's Chambers (SAG) to establish a Research Division that will conduct a comprehensive study of state laws, especially those that are 'outdated'.
'There was no Research Division in SAG before, and now we have established one. I had asked former SAG Dato Sri Talat Mahmood Abdul Rashid to conduct a special study to look at the laws we have, including the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and all the old laws that we need to look at.
'And if there are other laws that are related to trade, then we must take into account this law and (determine) our role,' he said.
He also said Sarawak will cooperate with the Federal government in implementing carbon trading to ensure the implementation of a legal, efficient and sustainable carbon trading system.
The dinner also saw the presentation the MUDeNR Excellent Service Award for the year 2024 and also presented certificates of appreciation to retired and transferred staff.

Simultaneously, we need to acknowledge that discrimination against women still exists in certain legal and administrative systems. In particular, issues related to divorce rights and workplace protections continue to place women at a disadvantage. True gender equality cannot be achieved through isolated legal amendments or symbolic gestures. A thorough review of all remaining laws and policies that contain gender bias is essential, with a clear commitment to reform that ensures fair treatment of women across all sectors. As part of our efforts towards broader systemic reform, we once again highlight the ten petitions put forward by Wanita MCA advocating for gender equality and women's rights in Malaysia. One key petition calls for the swift passage of the Anti-Discrimination Against Women Bill, to ensure all legislation reflects the fundamental value of gender parity. Wanita MCA reaffirms our commitment to working closely with both civil society and the government to ensure this constitutional reform is implemented fairly, transparently and effectively. Abang Johari: Japan key partner in Sarawak's green growth with RM31.6 bln in 2024 trade

KUCHING (Aug 8): Japan remains one of Sarawak's top trading partners, with trade valued at RM31.6 billion in 2024, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. He noted that since 2011, Japanese investments in Sarawak's manufacturing sector have reached RM13.8 billion, generating over 4,000 jobs – a reflection of the long-standing strategic partnership between Sarawak and Japan. 'These are more than numbers, they reflect deep trust and shared progress. 'We are committed to strengthening this relationship, especially in digital technology, green hydrogen and ammonia, as well as renewable energy,' he said in a speech delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan during Sarawak Week at the Malaysia Pavilion during World Expo Osaka 2025 in Japan today. Abang Johari said Sarawak remains committed to strengthening ties with Japan, particularly in digital technology, green hydrogen and ammonia, and renewable energy. He also outlined Sarawak's economic focus on six key pillars – manufacturing, agriculture, tourism, forestry, mining (including oil and gas), and services – driven by innovation, sustainability, and global partnerships. These priorities, he said, align with national strategies such as the 13th Malaysia Plan and the National Investment Policy, positioning Sarawak as a national hub for renewable energy, semiconductors, and aerospace-related economic activities. 'Our clean, reliable, and affordable renewable energy, mainly from hydropower, solar, biomass and waste to energy, positions Sarawak among the most sustainable regions in Southeast Asia. 'We offer a stable political climate, transparent governance, and an investor-friendly environment with robust infrastructure, pro-business policies, and expanding digital, air, and sea connectivity,' he said. Saudi's ACWA Power reaffirms S'wak green hydrogen partnership, eyes NEOM-scale development

According to a press release, the visit underscores ACWA Power's commitment to replicate the scale and ambition of its flagship NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia for Sarawak. Currently under development, NEOM is the world's largest green hydrogen project, targeting 4GW of renewable power to produce 600 tonnes of green hydrogen per day. The US$8.4 billion initiative aims to position Saudi Arabia as a global leader in the hydrogen economy ― a vision aligned with Sarawak's clean energy vision. The collaboration is also part of ACWA Power's US$10 billion investment commitment to Malaysia, announced during the Asean-GCC Summit in May this year, with Sarawak expected to benefit from infrastructure, technology transfer, and economic spillovers. In Sarawak, ACWA Power and SEDCE are jointly exploring the development of a green hydrogen facility powered by up to 4GW of captive renewable energy, delivering 2GW of electrolyser capacity for both export and domestic decarbonisation. The companies formalised the basis of this collaboration through an agreement signed last year. Both parties are also in discussions with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to explore floating solar projects in Batang Ai and Murum hydroelectric dams, and with the State Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications and the State Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability to ensure regulatory alignment. The cooperation supports Sarawak's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), and the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (HETR), while strengthening clean energy ties between Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.
