KUCHING (Aug 8): ACWA Power founder and chairman Mohammad Abunayyan paid a courtesy visit to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today, reaffirming the company's strategic partnership with SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd (SEDCE) to develop large-scale green hydrogen projects in the state.
According to a press release, the visit underscores ACWA Power's commitment to replicate the scale and ambition of its flagship NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia for Sarawak.
Currently under development, NEOM is the world's largest green hydrogen project, targeting 4GW of renewable power to produce 600 tonnes of green hydrogen per day.
The US$8.4 billion initiative aims to position Saudi Arabia as a global leader in the hydrogen economy ― a vision aligned with Sarawak's clean energy vision.
The collaboration is also part of ACWA Power's US$10 billion investment commitment to Malaysia, announced during the Asean-GCC Summit in May this year, with Sarawak expected to benefit from infrastructure, technology transfer, and economic spillovers.
In Sarawak, ACWA Power and SEDCE are jointly exploring the development of a green hydrogen facility powered by up to 4GW of captive renewable energy, delivering 2GW of electrolyser capacity for both export and domestic decarbonisation.
The companies formalised the basis of this collaboration through an agreement signed last year.
Both parties are also in discussions with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to explore floating solar projects in Batang Ai and Murum hydroelectric dams, and with the State Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications and the State Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability to ensure regulatory alignment.
The cooperation supports Sarawak's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), and the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (HETR), while strengthening clean energy ties between Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.
Also present at the meeting were Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain, general manager Datu Abdul Hadi, chief investment officer Haji Zainnurain Othman, SEDCE CEO Dennis Harun Wong, ACWA Power senior advisor to the chairman Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar, country director Mathew Chandapillai, executive vice-president of business development (Middle East/Global Water) Udyan Seth, director of business development and projects Azhari Sulaiman, and Advisor to Chairman ACWA Power Co Dato JIV Sammanathan. Ringgit poised for cautious trading as US tariff concerns linger

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit is anticipated to trade cautiously against the dollar this week as investors monitor external developments, particularly regarding US tariffs. In a research note, Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd stated that the ringgit should find support from domestic economic stability and a softer US dollar, likely holding near current levels. 'President Donald Trump's proposed chips and pharmaceutical tariffs will likely dampen sentiment in risk assets. Investors are also tracking pressure on BRICS and signs of strain in the US-China trade detente. 'Trump's rapid-fire policy moves and media headlines continue to drive market uncertainty,' it said. Hence, the research house said the ringgit traded higher last week, hovering within the range of 4.23 to 4.24 after a weaker-than-expected US jobs report pulled the greenback lower. On a Friday-to-Friday basis, the ringgit ended last week higher against the greenback, closing at 4.2420/2480 versus 4.2750/2815 previously. However, the local note traded lower against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit depreciated vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.8720/8763 last Friday from 2.8407/8452 the previous week, declined against the British pound to 5.7034/7114 from 5.6208/6293 and eased versus the euro to 4.9381/9451 from 4.8752/8826. The ringgit also trended lower against Asean currencies. The local note slipped against the Singapore dollar to 3.3014/3064 at the end of last week from 3.2907/2960, inched down versus the Thai baht to 13.1173/1419 from 13.0058/0319, slid versus the Indonesian rupiah to 260.3/260.8 from 258.8/259.4 and edged down against the Philippine peso to 7.43/7.44 from 7.35/7.36 in the preceding week. — Bernama

Bursa Malaysia likely to retain uptrend this week on positive data flow

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia is likely to retain its constructive bias into this week, with potential upside breakout above the 1,560 level, says an analyst. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd's head of investment research, Mohd Sedek Jantan, said the near-term momentum would remain path-dependent on investor sentiment and the regional risk premium. He noted that Malaysia's final second quarter of 2025 (2Q25) gross domestic product reading due on Aug 15 should confirm the economy's resilience, with forecast unchanged at 4.5% year-on-year. 'We view positive domestic macro prints and robust US corporate earnings should provide further underpinning for the index,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said investors are keeping a close watch on US-China trade relations. He said reports signalled talks might restart amid escalating tariff impacts and geopolitical uncertainty, both of which are influencing market trends. On a weekly basis, the index rose 23.63 points to 1,556.98 last Friday from 1,533.35 a week earlier.

Taiwan exceeds full-year trade surplus record with US in 7 months

Uncertainty persists: A display of a semiconductor chip made by TSMC in Taipei. Taiwanese firms which have US capacity such as TSMC may be exempted, but how that plays out for firms without capex commitment remains unclear. — AFP TAIPEI: Taiwan's trade surplus with the United States has exceeded its full-year record in just seven months, as a global boom in artificial intelligence (AI) fuels demand for its tech products. US-bound shipments from Taiwan rose nearly 63% in July from a year earlier to US$18.6bil, the Finance Ministry said in a statement last Friday. That brought the island's trade surplus with the world's largest economy to almost US$70bil for January-July, already surpassing the yearly record set in 2024. The latest reading showed no sign of a slowdown, with overall exports soaring 42% in July from a year earlier, the biggest gain in 15 years and far more than forecast by any economist in a Bloomberg survey. Exports benefitted from the rapid development of innovative applications in AI, as well as this month's deadline for US tariffs to take effect, the ministry said in the statement. It expects full-year exports to reach US$500bil for the first time ever. The current full-year record for exports was US$479bil set in 2022. Taiwan has been cashing in on surging demand for AI around the world, racking up an unprecedented trade surplus with the United States that's drawn President Donald Trump's ire. The export growth in July was somewhat overstated given the strong appreciation of Taiwan dollar, said Michelle Lam, Greater China economist at Societe Generale SA. 'While we do expect some moderation ahead as front-loading activities ease, the strength of AI demand has remained solid.' Last week, the US announced a 20% tariff on goods from Taiwan – which the government in Taipei has called temporary but a rate higher than those imposed on regional rivals including Japan and South Korea. The move sparked concerns that it risks undermining the competitiveness of Taiwanese companies. But for Taiwan, even more significant are national security reviews known as Section 232 investigations into semiconductor-related products. At stake in the probes led by the US Department of Commerce are goods that account for some 80% of Taiwan's US-bound exports, which are currently subject to exemptions. Last Wednesday, Trump said the tariff rate on chips would be set at 100%, but promised there would be no charge 'if you're building in the United States of America'. Investors have interpreted the comment as a positive signal for the island's largest firm, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), the go-to supplier of advanced chips for Apple Inc and Nvidia Corp. TSMC has been actively investing in US production facilities, which could potentially shield it from the steep tariffs. 'Uncertainty remains to what extent the 100% chip tariff will affect Taiwan's chip exports,' Lam said. 'Firms which have US capacity such as TSMC may be exempted, but how that plays out for firms without capex commitment remain unclear.' The Taiwan government expects exports to grow between 17% and 22% year-on-year next month, even as some traditional industries and mid-sized companies may come under pressure from the new 20% tariff, said Beatrice Tsai, Director General of the Ministry's Department of Statistics, at a briefing last Friday. She also said the government is likely to raise its forecasts for economic growth, both for the third quarter and the full year of 2025. The updated projections will be released this Friday. — Bloomberg
