Operation Kalnemi: 118 fake 'babas' busted in Uttarakhand
According to the police, the widespread campaign targets individuals posing as 'Peer-Fakirs' who are exploiting unsuspecting citizens. As part of the ongoing drive, 66 suspicious individuals were specifically detained in Udham Singh Nagar on Saturday alone.
Police confirmed that those arrested were found to possess criminal tendencies, preying on the vulnerable. They stand accused of misleading innocent citizens and subjecting them to mental, physical, and financial exploitation.
"We are committed to rooting out these fraudsters who exploit the faith of innocent people," Senior Superintendent of Police in Udham Singh Nagar, Manikant Mishra told TNIE, adding, "This operation aims to protect our citizens from financial and emotional ruin at the hands of these charlatans."
In a continuing crackdown on fraudulent spiritualists, Dehradun Police on Saturday arrested 23 more individuals posing as 'holy men' or 'babas' from various police station areas across the city. This marks the second consecutive day of the concerted effort, which saw 25 similar arrests made on Friday.
Of the 23 arrested on Saturday, 10 were identified as hailing from other states, indicating a wider network of alleged fraudsters.
"Police are actively arresting individuals who, disguised as sadhus and saints, lure and defraud women and youth by promising solutions to their domestic problems," SSP Ajay Singh stated.

Suspended for media byte, IIT-B pupil to be reinstated
Mumbai: IIT-Bombay must reinstate a Ph D student who had been suspended in April this year for 'giving unauthorised interviews to the media'. Bombay high court has said this in an order passed on July 15. The court said that the suspension will cease to have effect from July 25 and the period of suspension undergone will not have any bearing on the record of the petitioner. An official from the institute said they would follow the court's order. The student, Akshay Sawant, from department of humanities and social sciences, was suspended for eight months based on a report of the institute's fact-finding committee and disciplinary action committee. The statement was made in the context of the allegations of favouritism against the institute by third parties. The student got a call regarding 'unauthorised interviews given to the media'. The student said in the petition that he did not give consent for the quote to the mediaperson, which he had also submitted before the fact-finding committee. The student received an order on Apr 28, suspending him till Dec 31, 2025, with immediate effect. Even after writing to the institute appealing against the order, there was no response, forcing the student to move court. Disposing of the petition, the court mentioned that the order was passed in the peculiar facts and circumstances of the case so that the academic career of the petitioner should not be jeopardised. The order said he had made the statements in the article in an individual capacity. Funds received from frgn countries were used to buy assets: ED on Chhangur Baba
Lucknow: The Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Lucknow Zonal Office, completed search operations at 15 locations related to Chhangur Baba, his close associate Naveen Rohra, and others in Balrampur, Lucknow, and Mumbai. These operations were conducted under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, in connection with a money laundering case related to Chhangur Baba and others on Friday. The ED initiated the investigation based on an FIR registered by ATS, Lucknow, under various sections. The FIR alleged a large-scale conspiracy involving unlawful religious conversions, utilisation of foreign funding, and activities posing a potential threat to national security. Chhangur Baba and his associates are alleged to have established an extensive network operating from the premises of Chand Auliya Dargah, Balrampur, where he regularly organised large gatherings attended by both Indian and foreign nationals. He is accused of systematically inducing, coercing, and manipulating individuals of other faiths—particularly Scheduled Castes and economically disadvantaged persons belonging to the Hindu religion—into religious conversion. The ED sources said that during the course of the investigation, 22 bank accounts related to Chhangur Baba and his associates were analysed. From the analysis of these bank accounts, funds amounting to more than Rs. 60 Crore received by Chhangur Baba and his associates were identified. It was also revealed that a large amount of funds was received from foreign countries by Chhangur Baba and his associates. During the searches, a number of documents were seized, which revealed that the funds, which are nothing but proceeds of crime, were majorly transferred to different people for purchasing a number of immovable properties worth crores of rupees and carrying out construction activities on these properties. The evidence collected during the searches revealed that all the immovable assets acquired by Chhangur Baba are in the names of his associates, Naveen Rohra and Neetu Rohra, to conceal his actual involvement in money laundering. The searches also resulted in the recovery of physical records relevant to the investigation. Further investigation is in progress.

Raj HC dissolves 34-year marriage, cites 17-year separation as ‘cruelty'
Jaipur: Rajasthan High Court (HC) dissolved a marriage that had effectively ended years ago, ruling that forcing a husband and wife to continue a dead relationship after a 17-year separation amounts to cruelty to both parties. The division bench of Justices Inderjeet Singh and Anand Sharma was on Thursday hearing an appeal filed by Ratiram Shukla from Alwar district. Shukla had married Kishandevi in Feb 1991 as per Hindu rites. In his divorce petition filed in 2010, he alleged that from the very beginning, his wife had behaved cruelly, refused to live with his parents, and repeatedly denied cohabitation. According to him, she finally left the matrimonial home in 2008 and never returned. The trial court dismissed Shukla's petition in 2017, but HC noted that the couple had had been living apart since 2008 and there was no evidence to contradict the claim that Kishandevi had deserted her husband. The judges also considered that Kishandevi filed criminal cases against Shukla under IPC Sections 498A and 406, which ended in his acquittal in 2016.
