In another major move by the Muhammad Yunus-led interim regime targeting Sheikh Hasina, the International Crimes Tribunal Bangladesh (ICT-BD) will formally hear a slew of charges against the deposed Prime Minister on Sunday, and the proceedings will be broadcasted live on the state-run BTV, in a first in the country's history. Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted from power and forced to flee to India on August 5 last year after a massive student-led agitation, is facing multiple cases, including that of murder, corruption, and war crimes, in Bangladesh courts that have so far debarred photography or telecast of trial proceedings against her.
However, the decision of the International Crimes Tribunal Bangladesh (ICT-BD) to allow live telecast of the trial proceedings against Hasina, who could face a death sentence if convicted of the serious charges against her, is poised to set a new precedent in Bangladesh's judicial history.
Earlier in February, the three-judge ICT-BD had ordered the investigation against Sheikh Hasina to be completed by April. 'The prosecution will submit formal charges against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina at the ICT-BD tomorrow in a case filed over crimes against humanity committed during the July-August 2024 mass uprising,' the state-run BSS said, according to news agency PTI. In a statement, ICT-BD prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim told the media that proceedings would start at 9.30 am local time, and will be broadcasted live on Bangladesh Television (BTV)– the country's national broadcaster. 'The entire nation will witness the submission of the first formal charges to the tribunal against influential figures of the ousted Awami League government, including Sheikh Hasina,' Gazi said, adding that the move would 'ensure transparency in the judicial process'.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam said the ICT-BD would simultaneously hear charges against former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, both in jail to stand trial. What is the International Crimes Tribunal-Bangladesh?
The International Crimes Tribunal Bangladesh (ICT-BD) was original formed to prosecute Bangladeshi leaders, civil servants, army officials, and others, who had collaborated with the Pakistan Army during the 1971 Liberation War.
Notably, six top leaders of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and one leader of the former prime minister Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) were hanged to death after they were convicted by the tribunal.
Earlier, the tribunal had issued an arrest warrant against Sheikh Hasina, while interim government in Dhaka has sought her repatriation from India in a diplomatic note. New Delhi has only acknowledged receipt with no further comment. The fall of Sheikh Hasina
On August 5 2024, the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime was ousted from power after mass student protests led by the Students against Discrimination (SAD). Three days later, an Interim Government came to power in Dhaka with Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus at his helm as Chief Advisor.
Hasina fled to India, while most leaders and officials of her Awami League party and government, were arrested to face serious charges like mass murder, genocide, corruption, among others, primarily to calm the protests who demanded strict action against the Hasina regime for allegedly killing hundreds, including civilians during the protest.
According to a UN rights office report some 1,400 people were killed between July 15 and August 15 last year as violence continued even after the fall of the past regime.

Rohingya man arrested in Tripura's Unakoti district: police
A Rohingya man was arrested at Kailashahar in Tripura's Unakoti district along with a man in whose house he was found, police said on Thursday. The Rohingya man has been identified as Noor Mustafa and the other arrested man as Abdul Wahid. 'We got secret information last night that a Myanmar national is hiding at Dhaliarkandi. A team of police conducted a raid at Wahid's house and arrested Noor Mustafa and the house owner. Some touts helped him. We are trying to trace them. We forwarded them to court today,' said a senior police officer. The police have found out that Mustafa and his family left Myanmar for Bangladesh in 2012. In 2019, he came to India and worked in Hyderabad. He was planning to go back to Bangladesh with the help of a tout. Arrests of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh have been common in Tripura, more so since the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government's fall in Dhaka last year following an uprising. Vigil has since been tightened along the 856-km-long border with Bangladesh, parts of which are still unfenced owing to local disputes. As per the police, 816 Bangladeshis, 79 Rohingya persons, and two Nigerians were arrested from January 1, 2024, to February 28 this year. As many as 483 of these arrests were made after August 5, 2024, when the Hasina government fell.

None from Congress going to jail, other Opposition parties need to think of a Third Front: Atishi
At a time when the Opposition INDIA bloc seems to be struggling to take on the ruling BJP-led NDA, senior AAP leader and Delhi's former Chief Minister Atishi has said that non-Congress, non-BJP parties 'definitely need' to think about a Third Front. Expressing disappointment with the role of the Congress in the INDIA bloc, Atishi accused the party of being in an 'unstated alliance' with the BJP. While leaders of non-Congress Opposition parties, she said, were facing 'persecution' of one kind or another, that was not the case with the Congress. She pointed to what she called 'a pattern' and asked, 'Why do their (Congress) leaders not go to jail?'. Atishi made these remarks in an interview with The Indian Express Wednesday, a day after the AAP skipped a meeting of several INDIA constituents which met in Delhi to discuss a joint letter to the Prime Minister to seek a special session of Parliament to 'discuss the developments following the terror attack in Pahalgam'. Leaders of 16 INDIA parties, including the Congress, TMC, SP, RJD, DMK, JMM, National Conference, Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Left, signed the letter. The AAP, however, chose to send a separate letter to the Prime Minister, demanding a special session. Atishi is currently Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Assembly. 'I would say I am disappointed with the Congress (role in the INDIA bloc). It was their responsibility to assume a leadership position. For example, if I am a Chief Minister… it is my role to take everyone along… I feel that in the INDIA alliance, Congress is the most senior party. It is the biggest party. It has a footprint in all states. In that context, it was their responsibility to take everyone along,' she said. On the issue of forming a Third Front, Atishi said, 'I think there is definitely a need for non-Congress, non-BJP parties to think about what is happening in the country and the rights of states, the way the persecution of their leaders, etc, is happening – it (Third Front) is definitely something to think about.' Citing an example, she said Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, during a recent trip to Kerala, 'trashed' Chief Minister and CPM leader Pinarayi Vijayan, a key INDIA ally. She accused Gandhi of 'speaking the language of the BJP' and alleged an 'unstated alliance between the Congress and the BJP'. 'There seems to be an unstated alliance between the Congress and the BJP. In the Delhi excise policy matter (there was) no recovery of money, no evidence, no nothing, par saare neta hamare jail chale gaye; par National Herald case mein Congress ka ek bhi neta jail nahin gaya hai (All our leaders went to jail in the Delhi excise policy matter, but not a single Congress leader has gone to jail in the National Herald case),' she said. 'How has this happened… This entire DLF land scam – has Robert Vadra gone to jail? No, he hasn't. Commonwealth Games ka to poora matter hi close ho gaya (the entire Commonwealth Games case has been closed),' she said. 'Just look at the pattern – it is only cases of leaders who join the BJP that are closed… A similar thing is happening with Congress. What does this pattern tell you? How is it that Aam Aadmi Party netas go to jail … you are filing cases against TMC's Abhishek Banerjee, against the daughter of CPM's Pinarayi Vijayan. Why doesn't this happen when it comes to the Congress? Why do their leaders not go to jail? So there is definitely an unstated alliance,' Atishi alleged.
