MLA emphasises govt.'s commitment to green development
At a programme organised by the Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA) commemorating World Environment Day at Renigunta, The MLA underscored the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding the environment. 'The World Environment Day is not just symbolic, but a call for action to individuals, communities and governments to take sustainable steps for the future.'
Mr. Reddy also highlighted the various green initiatives taken up by the TDP-led government under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
He recalled the significance of the NTR Green Vision project, which aimed to increase forest cover across Andhra Pradesh through large-scale tree plantations involving public participation, particularly students.
Further, the MLA noted that the TDP government, during its earlier stint in 2014-19, had made Andhra Pradesh a frontrunner in renewable energy by establishing massive solar and wind power projects, especially in districts like Anantapur and Kurnool, and set ambitious targets to generate over 10,000 megawatts of clean energy. Waste-to-energy projects were also launched through a government order in 2017, to manage municipal waste scientifically and sustainably.
The event was marked by the participation of several dignitaries including TUDA Chairman Dollars Divakar Reddy, Andhra Pradesh Greening and Beautification Corporation Chairperson Mannuru Sugunamma and Tirupati Municipal Corporation Commissioner N. Mourya.
Mr. Divakar Reddy and others hailed the Smart Village – Smart Ward programme, another key initiative under TDP, as having aimed at making local communities cleaner and greener by promoting solid waste management, solar-powered infrastructure, and drinking water safety.
The leaders planted saplings and took a pledge to protect the environment.

In Andhra Local Body By-Poll, Jagan Reddy's Big Defeat In Family Stronghold
Hyderabad: Jagan Mohan Reddy 's YSR Congress Party was routed in the Pulivendula zilla parishad territorial constituency, or ZPTC, by-poll Thursday. The ex-Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister's candidate, Hemanth Reddy, was thumped by the ruling Telugu Desam Party's Latha Reddy by 6,035 votes. The YSRCP candidate, in fact, secured fewer than 700 votes and lost his election deposit. This is the first time in nearly three decades that an election was held for the Pulivendula ZPTC seat, which had previously been won unopposed by YSRCP candidates. The TDP has celebrated the win as Pulivendula celebrating "independence, just a day before Independence Day". A delighted S Savitha, the Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, also put Jagan Reddy on notice, declaring the TDP will win his family stronghold in the 2029 Assembly election. The defeat has been made worse because the Pulivendula ZPTC falls within the Assembly constituency of the same name, which is a stronghold of the Chief Minister and his family. Mr Reddy has held the Pulivendula Assembly seat since 2014. Before that it was held by his father, YS Rajasekhara Reddy; his mother, YS Vijayammma; and other members of the family, including his uncle Y. S. Purushothama Reddy. Defeat in this prestige battle will come as a big blow for Jagan Reddy, who is also set to lose the Vontimitta ZPTC. At the last update, the TDP's Muddu Krishna Reddy had 6,270 votes to the fewer than 3,200 secured by the YSRCP's Iragamreddy Subbareddy. A furious Jagan Reddy has already demanded the Pulivendula and Vontimitta by-polls be cancelled and a second election be held under the supervision of central forces. READ | "Mockery Of Democracy": Jagan Reddy Slams Andhra Panchayat Bypolls Mr Reddy told reporters booth agents from his YSR Congress Party had been forced to abandon their posts and people had been bullied into voting for the TDP. "Cancel the two elections and re-conduct them under the protection of central forces," he declared. Mr Reddy claimed an estimated 10,600 votes across 15 booths were suspect. He also said around 700 police personnel deployed at these booths to ensure a peaceful election had terrorised voters. And he slammed the shifting of polling booths, saying it was meant to threaten or confuse voters and force them to return without voting. The party will move the court to cancel the election, the former Chief Minister said. With input from agencies

Could Have Bought Rolls-Royce If I Had Removed More Kidneys: DMK MLA's Remark Triggers Backlash
Last Updated: DMK MLA Kathiravan's comments on kidney surgeries at his Trichy hospital sparked outrage. BJP's Annamalai and AIADMK's Palanisamy condemned it, alleging a kidney-stealing racket. A statement by DMK MLA Kathiravan has sparked an outrage, with political leaders in Tamil Nadu suggesting a kidney-stealing racket is functional at his Trichy hospital. BJP leader Annamalai and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palanisamy strongly condemned remarks of DMK MLA from Manachanallur regarding kidney operation of people at his family-run hospital. Criticising the Manachanallur MLA, Annamalai shared a video on X showing Kathiravan discussing the profits made by kidney operations in his hospital and comparing it with the price of a Rolls-Royce car. In the video, Kathiravan said, 'After covering the medical expenses and doctor fees, I will have only 2 to 3 lakhs left (after each kidney operation). Do you know the price of my father's Rolls-Royce car? It is Rs 14.5 crore. The total kidney operations carried out by us is only 252, with the profit of Rs 2 lakh per kidney operation, when can I buy a Rolls-Royce car? I could have bought it only if I had removed all the kidneys from people in Thirupattur. My only concern is that no one realised I saved the lives of 252 people. The BJP leader accused the MLA's hospital of stealing kidney of poor weavers from Namakkal. He said that the DMK-led state government did not take any concrete action against the middleman. 'This is not a joke. Poor weavers from Namakkal were lured, their kidneys stolen, and the MLA himself admits in this video that his hospital made at least Rs 7.5 crore from this trade. Yet, the DMK Govt has taken no concrete action. Has their functionary Dravida Anandan, the middleman in this kidney theft racket, even been arrested?(sic)," he added. While former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy suggested people to avoid visiting clinics run by DMK members, saying they 'may lose your kidney". 'Don't even visit clinics run by DMK men even by mistake. You may lose your kidney. A group is prevailing which shows money to poor and is stealing organs. DMK government itself constituted a committee which investigated and discovered kidney stealing in a hospital belonging to DMK MLA. Was there action taken? NO," he said. He added that only the license for organ transplant in the hospital was cancelled, with no arrests made. 'The MLA says that for buying a Rolls Royce car, he might have to remove people's kidneys. His car is worth Rs 12 crore. He has admitted how many kidneys he needs to steal to buy the car, which is evident from the speech," Edappadi claimed. view comments First Published: August 14, 2025, 13:46 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
