Pacquiao's comeback falls short as Barrios retains WBC welterweight title

Al Jazeera20-07-2025
Manny Pacquiao's bid to become the oldest welterweight champion in boxing history fell short as he failed to beat Mario Barrios at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
But he did not lose, either.
Instead, the 46-year-old Pacquiao and the 30-year-old Barrios fought to a majority draw on Saturday, with one judge giving Barrios a 115-113 win and the other two judges scoring it a 114-114 draw.
The result allowed Barrios (29-2-2, 18 knockouts) to retain his WBC welterweight belt.
'I thought I won the fight,' Pacquiao said afterwards.
'I mean, it was a close fight. My opponent was very tough. It was a wonderful fight. It was good.'
Pacquiao (62-8-3, 39 KOs) already holds the record for the oldest welterweight champion, winning the belt via split-decision over Keith Thurman in 2019.
The Filipino legend was enshrined in the International Boxing Hall of Fame last month. Pacquiao dominated Saturday's fight early on, showing energy against his younger foe.
Ultimately, though, CompuBox stats had Barrios landing more punches (120-101) and more jabs (45-20), though Pacquiao landed 81 power punches to Barrios's 75.
Pacquiao held the lead on all three cards after 10 rounds, but Barrios took all three rounds on all three scorecards to avoid the upset. Age and stamina were definitely on Pacquiao's mind after the fight.
'I need to continue my training for longer going into a championship fight,' said Pacquiao, who lost his senatorial bid in the Philippines in May. 'Because of the election, I started late, but it's OK. Of course, I'd like a rematch. I want to leave a legacy and make the Filipino people proud.
'Don't tell that to Barrios.
'His stamina is crazy,' the champion said. 'He's still strong as hell, and his timing is real. He's still a very awkward fighter to try to figure out.'
As for a rematch, Barrios is ready.
'I'll do the rematch. Absolutely. This was huge for boxing. I'd love to do it again.'

FIFA 2026 World Cup draw set to be held in Las Vegas in December

Las Vegas is set to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw, with reports that the ceremony will be held on Friday, December 5. The city, based in Nevada, United States, was selected over cities in co-host nations Canada and Mexico. FIFA officials have not themselves confirmed the date or site but reports are now widespread for the December date in Vegas. For the first time, the competition will take place in three countries and has been expanded to feature 48 nations, as opposed to the traditional 32. Las Vegas's Allegiant Stadium was rejected as a host venue. Eleven US cities/venues were selected, along with three in Mexico (Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey) and two in Canada (Toronto and Vancouver). The US sites are divided into three regions. New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, Miami and Atlanta are a part of the eastern region, Kansas City, Dallas and Houston comprise a part of the central region, while Los Angeles, Seattle and the San Francisco Bay area make up three of the four cities in the western region. The draw will reveal the dozen groups with four nations per group. Mexico (Group A), Canada (Group B) and the United States (Group D) have already been selected for their groups. MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, will host the final match on July 19, 2026. Las Vegas hosted the draw in 1994, the last time the World Cup was held in the United States. The modern Sphere, which has a seating capacity of at least 17,000 people and opened in 2023, is the frontrunning venue to host the evening. Although hosting the draw for the 1994 edition, Vegas was not a host city for any matches, a situation that is also the case for next year's event. Qualifying for the tournament is set to be concluded by the end of March 2026, following an intercontinental playoff.

Trafford completes Man City return in $36 million deal

PA Media/dpa London England Under-21s goalkeeper James Trafford's return to Manchester City fulfils a dream he had of going back to his former club. Trafford has signed a five-year contract with the side he left for Burnley in 2023 after City activated a £27 million ($36.2 million) buy-back clause. 'Rejoining City is such a special and proud moment both for me and my family. I always dreamed that one day I would be able to come back to Manchester City,' said the 22-year-old. 'This is the place I call home - it's a truly special football club with fantastic people who make it such a unique place to work and play. 'I am also very excited and honoured to have been given the opportunity to work under Pep and with such a world-class group of players. 'I am still very young and hungry to keep learning and improving - and I know there is no better environment than Manchester City to help make me become the best goalkeeper I can be. 'I will do everything I can to help this great club look to achieve even more success.' Trafford, who will wear the number one shirt, becomes the club's sixth signing of the summer after Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, Marcus Bettinelli, Rayan Cherki and Sverre Nypan. He joined City's academy in 2015 but after loans at Accrington and Bolton the need for regular first-team football - with Ederson still the man to displace at the Etihad Stadium - took him to Turf Moor. 'When I had the opportunity to go to Burnley I thought it was the right step for me in that moment and in the long-term it was to achieve to come back here. I'm happy that I've achieved it,' he added. City intend to retain the 31-year-old Ederson so Trafford will still have to get past an established number one. City's sporting director Hugo Viana said: 'James is already one of the most accomplished young goalkeepers in the English game, and we are delighted to welcome him back to Manchester City. 'We feel he is an ideal fit for this squad and will bring great quality to the goalkeeping department. 'We fully believe he will be really successful and a top goalkeeper for Manchester City and the national team. 'I also have no doubt that working with Pep and the technical staff here at City will only see James further develop his abilities.' Trafford is the fourth goalkeeper at manager Pep Guardiola's disposal, with Ederson, Stefan Ortega and Marcus Bettinelli already at the club. Trafford will challenge Brazil's Ederson, who has been first choice for eight years, for the number one spot. Ederson is in the final year of his contract and has been linked with a move to Galatasaray, but last month described rumours of a departure as '99% fake news'. City have not received any bids for the 31-year-old, but there are doubts about the future of German Ortega given the increased competition for game time Trafford's arrival will bring. Trafford conceded just 16 league goals with Burnley last term and kept a Championship-best 30 clean sheets, equalling Port Vale's Football League record which was set 71 years ago. He also set a new Championship record of 12 consecutive shutouts between December and February before he was finally beaten in a 2-1 victory at Cardiff City at the start of March.

‘Huge step': Lakers' Luka Doncic shows off summer shred in Men's Health

After plenty of attention was brought to Luka Doncic's fitness level following his shocking February trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, the five-time All-Star has been putting together another surprise this offseason. After reports of an improved physique surfaced earlier this summer, a profile in Men's Health magazine confirmed the extent to which Doncic has gone to develop a slimmed-down look as he prepares for his first full season in Los Angeles. Doncic, 26, has generally been listed at 6-foot-6-inch (1.98 metres) and 230 pounds (104kg), although opinions on the weight have varied. It did not prohibit him from scoring 28.2 points with 8.2 rebounds and 7.7 assists last season. But reports indicated this past winter that the Dallas Mavericks had become exasperated with Doncic's lack of fitness, which might have contributed to a calf injury that the star guard had been rehabbing for a month before the trade that shocked the National Basketball Association (NBA). Ankle, calf, knee, and back injuries have slowed Doncic at certain times in his career, although he still managed to play at least 61 games in a season until he was reduced to 50 last year, combining the Mavericks and Lakers' games. Now, Doncic is visibly slimmer after an improved diet combined with a fitness programme. He has been avoiding gluten and keeping sugar to a minimum, while loading up on protein to help him get through multiple workouts a day that include lifting weights, along with on-court drills. 'Obviously, be the best that I can be, take care of myself,' Doncic told Men's Health. 'This year, with my team, I think we did a huge step. But this is just the start, you know. I need to keep going. Can't stop.' While fellow NBA superstar LeBron James exercised a contract option to return to the Lakers in 2025-26, the team also added centre Deandre Ayton, guard Marcus Smart and forward Jake LaRavia. The profile did not mention Doncic's current weight, but photographs showed off his slim look with greater muscle definition in his arms. His workouts kept him away from basketball at first, then had him return to the court in June. He will play for Slovenia in EuroBasket in August. 'So every summer, I try my best to work on different things,' he said. 'Obviously, I'm very competitive. This summer was just a little bit different, you know. It kind of motivated me to be even better.' World Class Athletes Train Hard to Slow Down—and Stop. Here's How Luka Doncic Hones Deceleration. — Men's Health Mag (@MensHealthMag) July 29, 2025
