Thiruvananthapuram: Human rights and environmental activist V B Ajayakumar died at a private hospital in the state capital on Sunday morning. He was 48. His body was taken to his hometown, Kodungallur, where it was kept for public homage at his residence. Later, the body was cremated at Chappara cemetery in Kodungallur. Ajayakumar was the founder of NGO Rights, which works for the educational upliftment of Dalit, tribal and marginalised communities. He was serving as the global convener of NGO Alliance for Climate Frontline Communities. He began his activism with movements like Narmada Bachao Andolan and People's Watch. He presented papers on marginalised communities at numerous UN conferences and participated in climate change discussions at COP 26 and COP 28. During 2018 floods, he led several initiatives for students in Dalit communities and in coastal areas. He also spoke at the United Nations Forum on Business and Human Rights conference held in Bangkok in Sept 2024. He was a speaker at the fifth forum of ministers and environment authorities of Asia Pacific organised by the United Nations Environment in Sri Lanka in Oct 2023. Alongside international activities, Ajayakumar undertook numerous initiatives for Dalit, adivasi and fishing communities in Kerala. Internal quota: Parameshwara appeals to groups to not protest
Home Minister G. Parameshwara here on Sunday said that the Congress government was committed to implementing internal reservation for Scheduled Caste communities in the State and appealed to those threatening to stage protest seeking implementation of it to not do so. 'We had made the declaration on internal reservation in Chitradurga and we have also committed to it in our manifesto. Whatever we need to do should be done according to the procedure and guidelines issued by the Supreme Court. We are committed to implementing internal reservation; procedures have to be followed for which we need some time,' he told presspersons. His statement comes in the light of Dalit left (Madigas) groups threatening a protest from August 11. Dalit left leaders from the BJP, including Govind Karjol and A. Narayanaswamy, have also made such a threat. The Minister said that the commission, headed by retired judge H.N. Nagamohan Das, would submit its report to the government on August 4. It would discussed in the State Cabinet and steps would be taken to implement the recommendations. The A.J. Sadashiva Commission report was not accepted by the then BJP government because of data issues. On the meeting of Ministers from the Scheduled Caste community that he had convened, Dr. Parameshwara said that it was decided to have a common voice on the internal reservation. 'If there are any issues with communities, it was decided to talk to them.'

Ashok Ram joins JD(U), calls Cong ‘B-team' of RJD
1 2 Patna: Former Bihar Congress president Ashok Ram on Sunday joined the JD(U) on Sunday, declaring CM Nitish Kumar a "necessity" for the state and branding the Congress as the "B-team" of the RJD. Ram, a six-time MLA and member of the Congress Working Committee, formally joined the JD(U) along with his son Atirek Kumar and supporters. JD(U) national working president and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Kumar Jha and state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha welcomed them into the party. Ram's move, just days before Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's proposed "padyatra" in 18 districts from Aug 9 or 10, triggered speculation. Observers cited his alleged differences with senior Congress leaders and his demand for a ticket for his son from Samastipur as possible reasons for the defection. Speaking to the reporters before his induction, Ram said, "The Congress has no base in the state. The party has lost its identity because its decisions are taken either by the RJD or its national president, Lalu Prasad." Backing Nitish's leadership, Ram added, "The state needs the leadership of Nitish today more than ever, due to his vision, policies and welfare schemes for Dalit and Mahadalit communities. He is the NDA's leader and will remain so." Ram's entry was marked by a show of strength at JD(U)'s state headquarters, attended by ministers Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Shrawan Kumar and senior party leaders. "His grassroots connect will strengthen the JD(U)," said Jha. Kushwaha called him a "seasoned, experienced, and grassroots leader" while Choudhary praised his wide acceptance across communities.
