Prada denies Kolhapuri GI violation in Rs 500 crore legal row

Prada has denied any infringement of the Geographical Indication (GI) for Kolhapuri chappals by featuring sandals inspired by the iconic traditional footwear at its Spring/Summer 2026 menswear collection. Responding to a legal notice, Prada's legal team said it has not used the term 'Kolhapuri' nor any associated GI markings in the naming, marketing, or presentation of its footwear at the menswear show held in Milan on June 22. Sent on July 1, the notice accused Prada of "selling, advertising, marketing GI-registered goods-traditional and handmade leather sandals, granted GI tag under the name 'Kolhapuri chappals' jointly for artisans from Karnataka and Maharashtra-without proper authorisation or permission, which seriously violates GI rights of my client, which attracts civil and criminal offences". Live Events The notice sought ₹500 crore in damages. But in a formal reply dated July 9, Prada rejected the charge. "The sandals in question are broadly described as 'leather sandals' and there has been no suggestion, direct or indirect, that they originate from the GI-designated region or replicate the traditional Kolhapuri manufacturing technique," it said. In a carefully worded emailed response to ET on June 27, Prada had admitted to being inspired by traditional Indian footwear. It had said that it "acknowledges that sandals inspired by traditional Indian footwear made in specific districts in Maharashtra and Karnataka were featured in its men's 2026 Spring/Summer show in Milan". However, it said it did not use the term Kolhapuri or refer to using the same manufacturing techniques. ET reached out to Prada for comment on their legal response but did not receive a reply until press time. LIDKAR officials said they were evaluating a response to Prada. Legal experts say India's GI laws protect against unauthorised commercial use of a registered product's name or implied origin but not design mimicry alone. "Borrowing the style without using the GI name in trade does not necessarily violate GI provisions," said Priyanka Khimani, founder of an IP law firm. "Unless Prada markets or sells these sandals using the word 'Kolhapuri' or implies a link to Kolhapur's craftsmanship, there is no legal recourse."

Jagjivan Ram dedicated his life for working class: Minister

Mysuru: Food and Civil Supplies minister KH Muniyappa on Friday said former deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram was a great leader who dedicated his life to the development of the oppressed, marginalised, and working class communities. Muniyappa addressed the gathering after inaugurating a state-level seminar that focused on Babu Jagjivan Ram's contributions, which was organised by the Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram Study, Research, and Extension Center of Karnataka State Open University. The state govt has established Babu Jagjivan Ram study centres in nine universities across the state to raise social, educational, and economic awareness among the grassroots communities through seminars, conferences, and other programmes, he said. The construction of a research institute and a large building for Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram centre at a cost of Rs 100 crore serves as a model for the entire nation. Karnataka government's pro-poor schemes in sync with the vision of Ambedkar, Jagjivan Ram, says Minister

Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs K.H. Muniyappa said here on Friday that the five guarantee schemes of the Karnataka government were in sync with the vision of B.R. Ambedkar and Babu Jagjivan Ram, and that the government was serving the cause of social justice. He was speaking at a seminar on 'Contributions of Babu Jagjivan Ram' conducted by the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU). Resource persons and speakers paid tribute to Jagjivan Ram's commitment to social justice and empowerment of the socially oppressed classes. Mr. Muniyappa said that Jagjivan Ram gave a voice to the oppressed section of the society, and like Ambedkar, used caste as a tool for social justice. This, he said, has to be contrasted with the present times where some forces use caste as a political weapon. He referred to the SC/ST Sub-Plan Act, 2013, introduced by the Congress government in the State, and pointed out that it mandates that a portion of the State's allocable budget be earmarked for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) in proportion to their population. This, the Minister said, helps in the upliftment of the Dalits as envisaged by Ambedkar and Jagjivan Ram. Paying tributes to Jagjivan Ram and his contribution in various capacities, Mr. Muniyappa said that the former stood for social equality and equal rights for the oppressed classes. The contribution of Jagjivan Ram as the Minister for Food and Agriculture, and the policies initiated by him which culminated in the Green Revolution, was also highlighted by him. On the prevailing situation with respect to the oppressed communities, the Minister said that although Dalit students receive reservation in schools and colleges, they continue to face social exploitation or discrimination. In universities and academic institutions, Dalit scholars struggle to receive equal recognition, while caste-based violence, atrocities, and land rights violations against Dalits still persist in some regions, he added. The Minister described Babu Jagjivan Ram as the model for a society which prioritised the development of all communities, especially the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and it was in the fitness of things that the Government of Karnataka has established Babu Jagjivan Ram study centres in nine universities across the State, including the KSOU in Mysuru. Through these centres, seminars, conferences, and other programmes are being organised to create social, educational, and economic awareness among the marginalised communities. Minister for Social Welfare H.C. Mahadevappa inaugurated the seminar, and KSOU Vice-Chancellor Sharanappa V. Halse, Registrar Naveen Kumar, Director of Babu Jagjivan Ram Research Centre Sharanamma, and others, were present.
