UK labour market cooled rapidly in June

LONDON : Britain's labour market cooled sharply and the number of people available for work jumped at the fastest pace since the Covid-19 pandemic, according to data that is likely to back up the Bank of England's (BoE) plan to stay on its interest rate-cutting path.
The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and accountants KPMG said today that their index of staff availability rose to 66.1 in June from 63.3 in May, the highest reading since November 2020.
A reading above 50 represents growth.
The survey is watched by BoE officials, who are increasingly relying on unofficial gauges of the labour market because of problems with some official data.
The BoE is expected to cut rates next month for the fifth time since last August.
Governor Andrew Bailey said in an interview with the Times published late yesterday that the BoE was sticking to its gradual and careful approach to cutting rates as it juggled the drop in employment with still-high inflation.
'If we saw the slack opening up much more quickly, that would lead us to a different conclusion,' he said.
Only the pandemic, the global financial crisis of 2008-09 and the immediate aftermath of the Sept 11 attacks in the US have resulted in faster growth in job market slack in the REC and KPMG report.
They said the latest readings reflected unusually high levels of uncertainty rather than a sudden downturn in Britain's economy.
'Ongoing geopolitical turbulence and the threat of rising costs, alongside the promise of technology efficiencies, mean companies continue to wait and see with their hiring,' said Jon Holt, group chief executive at KPMG.
Starting pay for new recruits and demand for staff cooled, adding to signs that the labour market is losing momentum.
Figures due out from the Office for National Statistics on Thursday are expected to show a similar slowdown in pay growth.
British economic growth contracted unexpectedly in May, according to official data published last week.
'While US President Donald Trump remains unpredictable on his approach to trade tariffs, last month's publication of the British government's industrial strategy might increase certainty among companies' hiring plans,' Holt said.

Premier: Free Tertiary Education Scheme's long-term sustainability to be prioritised with any expansion plans

Abang Johari listens as Gerawat makes a point during the town hall session. MIRI (July 23): Any expansion of Sarawak's Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) must be carefully deliberated to ensure its long-term sustainability, said Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. The Premier said this in response to questions from students during the town hall in conjunction with Sarawak Day here yesterday, where FTES was enthusiastically discussed. Abang Johari explained the tertiary institutions that will offer free education to Sarawakians next year are state-owned. 'We want to send 'Anak Sarawak' to these institutions and the latter's tuition fees will be taken care of by the state government. 'If we brazenly expand the initiative to other institutions, particularly those owned by the federal government, it might not be possible because they don't offer that,' he said. He pointed out that the state government decided to introduce the programme after improving its revenue from RM6 billion to over RM12 billion as this would ensure the programme could be a long-term one. 'Now that we are able to implement it, we are doing it carefully to make sure all Sarawakians can benefit from it,' he added. On his hope for the future of Sarawak and its development, Abang Johari said the younger generation should prepare themselves to lead. 'Self-confidence, discipline, social interaction skills, and the ability to work as a team are the four essential criteria that will shape Sarawak's future leaders,' he said. Abang Johari is seen in a group photo with the town hall attendees. These qualities are important not only for individual success, but also for building a resilient society that can adapt to rapid changes in technology, economy, and global dynamics, he stated. Abang Johari stressed that Sarawak's ongoing transformation agenda, particularly in digital economy, green energy (methanol production), and the recent launch of the KETEQ AI nano chip are among the government's efforts to improve and upgrade the state's economy to attract young Sarawakian talents to return to the state. He also reminded students that while artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most widely used technologies today and has the potential to ease many aspects of work, it must be approached with caution. 'Like deepfakes, imagine President Donald Trump speaks fluent Iban, it would be both absurd and alarming,' he said. He emphasised that using AI effectively requires not only a solid understanding of the technology, but also a strong ethical foundation and critical thinking skills as misusing AI could negatively impact society. The town hall session moderated by Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala was attended by over 1,500 including ministers and deputy ministers; students from 17 secondary schools and 11 public tertiary institutions; and representatives from 20 non-governmental organisations. Malaysia's inflation cools as veg goes cheap, but eating out still burns the wallet

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — Food prices in Malaysia showed mixed trends in June, with the overall food and beverages group rising by 2.1 per cent year-on-year, according to the Department of Statistics (DOSM). The price of vegetables saw a steep decline of 7.2 per cent, contributing to the moderation in headline inflation to 1.1 per cent. Milk and other dairy products fell by 1.8 per cent, while cereals, meat and fish also recorded softer prices. Food consumed at home fell 0.4 per cent, while commercially prepared meals rose 4.7 per cent, slightly faster than May. Oils and fats increased by 1.7 per cent, while fruits and nuts dropped by 0.1 per cent year-on-year. Core inflation was steady at 1.8 per cent while overall inflation excluding fuel slowed to 1.3 per cent, pointing to broader price stability in consumer essentials. Durable and semi-durable goods experienced more price declines than increases, with only 21 and 41 items, respectively, recording higher costs. Out of 573 tracked goods and services, more than half of the items showed no price changes. Restaurant and accommodation services remained the third-fastest rising category, albeit slowing from 3.0 per cent to 2.8 per cent. Urban and rural inflation remained subdued, suggesting widespread moderation across regions and spending habits.
