Another new Switch 2 game leaks ahead of Nintendo Direct reveal

Metro31-07-2025
Details of a new sequel, that is expected to be unveiled at today's Nintendo Direct, have emerged online, alongside the long rumoured Plants Vs. Zombies remake.
A new Nintendo Direct has been rumoured ever since the launch of the console in early June but in the end today's livestream has turned out to be only a Partner Showcase, which means third party games but nothing published by Nintendo themselves.
Upcoming games like Metroid Prime 4 will no doubt get their own showcase later in the year but today's Direct will focus on titles that are likely to include Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Elden Ring.
Nintendo hasn't confirmed any specific titles though, so it's hard to know for sure, but yesterday a new game from Disgaea publisher Nippon Ichi leaked. That was the result of the publisher publishing a tweet early but now a highly reliable leaker has revealed a second game: a prequel to Octopath Traveler 1 and 2.
The information comes from Billbill-kun, who has an essentially 100% record with leaks, as his sources are based in retail rather than game development.
That means he rarely offers much detail, beyond a game's existence, and in this case he says only that Octopath Traveler 0 is 'about to be made official' and will be released on Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, as well as Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
Although the first Octopath Traveler started out as a Switch exclusive the sequel was multiformat and that seems to be what's happening here too.

The Octopath Traveler games are old school Japanese role-players that use the HD-2D graphics engine, which Square Enix has repurposed for the ongoing series of Dragon Quest remakes – with Dragon Quest 1 & 2 also relatively likely to appear during the Nintendo Direct.
However, while Billbill-kun insists that Octopath Traveler 0 is real he does not guarantee that it will be in the Direct, that's merely speculation based on his knowledge that it is soon to be announced.
He also speculates that SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans Of The Tide may be briefly featured, ahead of a presentation from publisher THQ Nordic on August 1. The game has not been officially announced yet, but a new SpongeBob title has been rumoured multiple times. More Trending
Plants Vs. Zombies Replanted is also 'likely' to be at the Direct, a remake of the 2009 hit which has also been rumoured by other sources and which Billbill-kun suggests will be released on October 23. Although, again, it's not been officially announced by publisher EA yet.
Finally, he suggests that the Direct will probably feature Borderlands 4, which is out on October 3 – three weeks after the other versions.
That seems an obvious guess even without inside knowledge but while Billbill-kun remains uncertain about the exact details of the Direct, the news about Octopath Traveler 0, SpongeBob, and Plants Vs. Zombies is almost certainly correct and means they're all due to be revealed at some point soon – whether it's today or not.
We try to guess what will be in today's Nintendo Direct

People with Xbox Game Pass don't play more games than PS5 owners says analyst

New player data for Xbox Game Pass shows how most people aren't using the service the way it was intended. When it was first unveiled, Xbox Game Pass was seen as Microsoft's secret weapon; the key selling point for all Xbox consoles. But in the years that have followed it's become clear that video game subscriptions in general are not the draw that many imagined – that, in fact, relatively few people want a 'Netflix of gaming'. Game Pass in particular has regularly missed growth targets, with even the inclusion of Call Of Duty doing little to boost subscriber numbers. Many also believed Game Pass has done more harm than good to the health of the industry at large. Microsoft, despite previous claims to the contrary, admitted in 2023 that the service has led to less traditional game sales and last month, a couple of industry figures decried the service as an 'unsustainable' business model. A new report from Emmanuel Rosier, director of market intelligence at analytic firm Newzoo, has also examined the influence of Game Pass and found that it has little to no effect on people's playing habits. Rosier appeared on the Game Wise podcast to discuss industry trends based on Newzoo's research and one detail he shared was the difference in player behaviour between Xbox owners and PlayStation owners… where he found there wasn't really any. 'Despite all the efforts done by Microsoft with Game Pass and the acquisition of many studios and the release of very high quality games in Game Pass, we struggled to find a significant, different behaviour compared to players on PlayStation,' said Rosier. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. What he means by this is that even with access to Game Pass' huge library of games, Xbox owners aren't playing more games or even spending more time playing games than PlayStation owners; something Rosier admitted to being surprised by. Rosier also reiterated how Game Pass is cannibalising game sales, as evidenced by how Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6, which was a day one Game Pass launch, sold less Xbox copies compared to previous Call Of Duty games. He did note that Newzoo compiled its data based on games that a player had spent at least two hours on, which Rosier argued shows that Game Pass subscribers tend to only try new games for a brief time and then give up on them. 'There is so much offering in the Game Pass that if you don't really… if you're not getting hooked in the game very quickly, you just download another one…,' said Rosier. One thing Newzoo hasn't been able to measure is the completion rate of games on Game Pass, which would be interesting to know since it would show how many people actually stuck with games they did have an interest in. None of this behaviour is thought to be unique to Game Pass, but since it has a much larger library than PS Plus, and the promise of day one first party games, it's all the more notable that relatively few people are taking advantage of it. This is especially problematic for Xbox because they must now be unsure exactly how much to prioritise it, although they've certainly made a big deal about getting it working not just on consoles but on PC, mobile devices through cloud streaming, Amazon Fire sticks, and the upcoming ROG Xbox Ally handhelds. More Trending Microsoft's pivot to multiplatform releases seems to imply that they realise Game Pass has not worked out as a killer app. Since now some of its biggest Xbox games can be played on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, without any need for a Game Pass subscription. Even Xbox boss Phil Spencer, the man credited with spearheading Game Pass' creation, seems to have lost some enthusiasm for the service, labelling it as 'just another option' in an interview earlier this year. It's a far cry from his bold proclamation that Microsoft would quit the gaming business if Game Pass subscribers didn't reach 110 million by 2030. It almost certainly won't but this wouldn't be the first time Spencer said something that he didn't follow through on. Not only is Microsoft the biggest games publisher in the world, now that it owns Call Of Duty, but Spencer recently told Xbox employees the business is thriving, with 'more players, games, and gaming hours than ever before'… as hundreds of those employees were unceremoniously let go. Naughty Dog's new game Intergalactic getting close to launch suggests job ad

A new job listing seems to suggest that Naughty Dog's next game is a lot closer to release than previously suspected. There was plenty of excitement for Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet when it was announced at The Game Awards last year, mostly because it's the first entirely new game out of Naughty Dog since 2020. At the time, it was said the game had been in development for several, which hopefully means it'll be out for the PlayStation 5 in either 2026 or 2027, with a new job listing suggesting it will be sooner rather than later. Sony has said nothing about the release date, but Naughty Dog is hiring for someone to help put together promotional material for its games. And you don't do that unless they're going to be out at least relatively soon. The job listing for a gameplay capture artist was spotted on Naughty Dog's careers website. It shows the studio is in need of someone for 'creating fresh, unique, and exciting video and still-image assets for use in public-facing campaigns by capturing them directly from Naughty Dog's entire catalogue of games.' Admittedly, the position covers all of Naughty Dog's games, but if there's anything closer to release than Intergalactic they've given no clue as to its existence. It does have at least one other game in development, but it hasn't been properly announced yet. Past rumours and theories have pointed to it being a fantasy game but officially nothing is known about it. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. The odds of it being The Last Of Us 3 are low, since series creator Neil Druckmann is only in a producer role, and we have to imagine Naughty Dog is running out of ideas for more updates to The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered, following the inclusion of a chronological story mode. If anything, it'd make sense to ease off The Last Of Us for the time being, since the second season of the TV show has ended so there's no cross-promotion opportunities, at least until season three starts in 2027. Druckmann has also chosen to leave his position as co-showrunner so he can focus on directing Intergalactic, again suggesting that this new game is the studio's priority. So, assuming Naughty Dog's gearing up to promote Intergalactic with a new trailer and screenshots the game, or at least parts of it, are in a state the studio is happy to show off to the public. As for when any new trailer could be shown, the next possible time would be during a new State of Play. While Sony had a meaty State of Play just a couple of months ago (followed by a Ghost Of Yōtei-centric one in July), it has traditionally held a general showcase every September since 2019, so we are due another one next month. More Trending It'd make sense since once Ghost Of Yōtei launches in October, Sony's first party release schedule is looking awfully slim, with only Returnal follow-up Soras and Arc System Works' Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls confirmed for next year. Alternatively, Sony and Naughty Dog could simply wait for this year's The Game Awards, which they have used in the past. Just for comparison's sake, the June 2025 State of Play garnered over three million views on the PlayStation YouTube channel while last year's The Game Awards livestream was watched by roughly 14 million people. Games Inbox: Does it matter that physical video games are dying?

The Tuesday letters page asks how quickly Call Of Duty can change, as one reader asks for help speccing out his custom gaming PC. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@ Old argument Reading about the super rare Xbox game going for £1,000 the only thing I can think of is… it's not even a very good game. I doubt anyone that's thinking of paying that much for it is doing it because they love the game but just because they enjoy collecting rare things. Which is fine, it's not hurting anyone, but I don't think that's a very normal motivation for most people. I get that people don't want physical copies to go away, and everyone likes collecting something, but the relevance of physical copies went away the second that patches came to consoles. So… somewhere around 2000? After that, what's on the disc became irrelevant, because it's never the final game. In some cases there never is a final game. So really all you're collecting is a keepsake. Personally, I'd just collect posters or action figures or something of the games, at least they're more fun to have in your room. But all this complaining about Switch Game-Key Cards… the argument was lost two decades ago, for better or worse. Cranston Time delay As much as I'd like to see Call Of Duty get some serious competition, I really can't see Battlefield 6 outselling Black Ops 7 straight off the bat. We'll see I guess, but I think the problem is that by the time Activision get round to acknowledging the coemption, which will probably take a while because they're so comfortable, how quickly can changes be made? Call Of Duty games used to take three years to make but I don't think there is any set limit now and that's why everything's got out of order – it's just a rush to get whatever they can out of the door. That's the sort of attitude that Battlefield 6's success might help to prevent but that still means we're talking 2028 at the most before there's any shift in attitude. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. Will there ever be a year where there isn't a new Call Of Duty, because Activision thought it needed more time in the oven? I doubt it, they'll just puff up some DLC instead, like they did with Modern Warfare 3. Focus The flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long RE: Big Boy Bent. I didn't realise the Dreamcast had such a short lifespan either. I remember selling my console to a friend, then a fortnight later he said to me that Sega had stopped making games for it, which I was genuinely unaware of but at least I'd only charged him £50 for it. It's a shame, as it was a great console with some terrific games. I remember being blown away by the fabulous graphics of the arcade port of the boat racing game Hydro Thunder, but if I had one niggle with the Dreamcast it was the control pads, they were especially poor for beat 'em-ups. Adams6Legend Email your comments to: gamecentral@ Accurately named Will you get the chance to review Earthion? It looks amazing, Ancient made some of the best Mega Drive games and this looks like it's following that tradition. Considering how much you liked Gradius Origins I hope this is right up your street. Thanks again for everything, you're always a great read. Beastiebat (PSN ID) Currently playing: Nothing, haven't really got the time, just working through Parks and Rec for the first time with the 20 minutes I can find at the very end if the day… bloomin' school holidays. Tell a lie, I played Game Boy Tetris on my Switch for eight minutes yesterday. GC: Good heavens, how have Ancient been going so long? We may have missed our chance with this but at the very least we'll include it in our end of year catch-up. La Leyenda de Zelda Speaking from the gorgeous island of Tenerife. It's been a few days of sunshine, water park mayhem, and unfortunate sunburn. But when in Spain the sun always shines. Speaking of shining, I mentioned beforehand I'd be buying Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom for Switch 2, as soon as I could. GAME just so happened to spawn at the nearest shopping mall. It's truly unique to have brought a Spanish copy of the game that will actually work in the UK, due to Nintendo being region free. £60 for the title, but you get what you pay for. The privilege of paying top dollar to Nintendo. But at the end of the day, how many consumers can say they own a Spanish region copy, especially in the UK? That's something quite rare actually. Shahzaib Sadiq GC: We hope you don't already own the Switch 1 version, because the Switch 2 upgrade is only £7.99. Simple desires I'm going to be so upset when EA finally shut down BioWare. Let's face it, we all know it's coming and I'm amazed they've lasted this long to be honest. For EA they've been very patient with them and I'm already surprised they didn't get shut down after Anthem. Maybe EA felt guilty for pushing them into making a live service game. What I'm hoping is that Mass Effect is easier to make into game that non-fans will make, since the originals were pretty good third person shooters, amongst other things. I'm still not really clear why Dragon Age: The Veilguard was such a flop. The trailers were bad but I can't imagine they were the only reason people stayed away, because the combat was the best thing about the game. Which I guess undermines my point about Mass Effect. Maybe people are just getting tired of action role-players that aren't Soulslikes. I don't really understand that either, as you'd think people would appreciate the alternative an a game that wasn't ultra hard, but here we are. I wouldn't mind if Mass Effect had a bit of a Soulslike about it, but I don't think anyone has really made that concept work with a sci-fi game based on ranged combat before. Perhaps this could be the first but for me, personally I just want it to be like the old Mass Effects but with better graphics. Does that make me shallow? Gifford Semi-portable Regarding the Nintendo Switch 2. Despite being a long on the making, Nintendo did not even consider at all the ergonomics of the device. This is baffling. It is so uncomfortable to hold. I would have preferred a much smaller handheld to be fair, as well. Sheel Don't ask us I am planning to get a custom gaming PC from PC Specialist and I was wondering if other GameCentral readers could advise me on what parts to buy? As this is a lot of info to take in and I need advice for someone new (me) to buying my custom build. I would like a PC tower with 2TB SSD hard drive (a fast one, within my price range), at least 32GB RAM (fast as I can afford), i7 CPU, graphics card obviously. My budget is £2,000. I will pay for the delivery and warranty separately to that. I have a £15 off voucher from Edge magazine for PC Specialist. I want to target 1080p at 60fps, as that is what Simundo in the Inbox said he would do with his gaming PC when he buys it. I have a 1080p Phillips PC monitor and a 4K LG 60 inch TV. I will run the computer on one screen at a time. My friend is going to put my mechanical 8TB hard drive bought in July 2023 in the new PC and the Blu-ray writer both from my old PC. I don't want a fancy case, just one that does the job and does not fall apart, like the one I bought in 2004 from a different PC vendor. Do I need to buy bays for the 8TB hard drive and Blu-ray writer when I buy a tower from PC Specialist? I have to get a new PC by October 2025, as my current PC will not upgrade to Windows 11. I do use the PC for gaming but I also use it for using office programs, printing, email, web surfing, any other task I need it for. Could a GameCentral reader or unboxer advise me please? Thank you in advance. Andrew J. Inbox also-ransI fully endorse the idea of a Lego Batman v Superman, they'll have great fun mocking how terrible it is, I think.
