Octopath Traveler 0 Isn't Just a Prequel, It's a Whole New Approach

The Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase on Thursday showed trailers for some titles already announced for the Nintendo Switch 2, and revealed a few new titles as well. The biggest of those debut games is the third game in the Octopath Traveler series, Octopath Traveler 0. As the "0" implies, this game is a prequel to the first Octopath Traveler game, released on the original Switch in 2019. This turn-based RPG makes a big change to the series by allowing players to make their own protagonist instead of picking a character to play as. As the hero, players will have to rebuild their hometown and fight powerful enemies with the help of more than 30 recruitable characters. The Octopath Traveler series is a turn-based RPG, with the key feature of having eight playable characters. Each character starts from a different part of the world of Osterra and has their own unique job with abilities, and their story arc plays out and eventually meets up with the other heroes. Another trademark of the franchise is its HD-2D graphics and the Break and Boost battle system. In battles, players have their own Boost Points that can be used to quickly Break a character, so they can become unable to fight or can be saved to unleash more damage on enemies who get broken via regular attacks. The result is a turn-based RPG that has surprisingly fast combat. This new entry in the series isn't the only prequel for the franchise. In 2022, Square Enix released a free-to-play gacha game for Android and iOS called Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. That game was a direct prequel to the first Octopath game, so it's unclear how Octopath Travel 0 will fit into the timeline. Octopath Traveler 0 will come out on Dec. 4 for the Switch and Switch 2.

Another new Switch 2 game leaks ahead of Nintendo Direct reveal

Details of a new sequel, that is expected to be unveiled at today's Nintendo Direct, have emerged online, alongside the long rumoured Plants Vs. Zombies remake. A new Nintendo Direct has been rumoured ever since the launch of the console in early June but in the end today's livestream has turned out to be only a Partner Showcase, which means third party games but nothing published by Nintendo themselves. Upcoming games like Metroid Prime 4 will no doubt get their own showcase later in the year but today's Direct will focus on titles that are likely to include Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Elden Ring. Nintendo hasn't confirmed any specific titles though, so it's hard to know for sure, but yesterday a new game from Disgaea publisher Nippon Ichi leaked. That was the result of the publisher publishing a tweet early but now a highly reliable leaker has revealed a second game: a prequel to Octopath Traveler 1 and 2. The information comes from Billbill-kun, who has an essentially 100% record with leaks, as his sources are based in retail rather than game development. That means he rarely offers much detail, beyond a game's existence, and in this case he says only that Octopath Traveler 0 is 'about to be made official' and will be released on Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, as well as Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Although the first Octopath Traveler started out as a Switch exclusive the sequel was multiformat and that seems to be what's happening here too. Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning. The Octopath Traveler games are old school Japanese role-players that use the HD-2D graphics engine, which Square Enix has repurposed for the ongoing series of Dragon Quest remakes – with Dragon Quest 1 & 2 also relatively likely to appear during the Nintendo Direct. However, while Billbill-kun insists that Octopath Traveler 0 is real he does not guarantee that it will be in the Direct, that's merely speculation based on his knowledge that it is soon to be announced. He also speculates that SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans Of The Tide may be briefly featured, ahead of a presentation from publisher THQ Nordic on August 1. The game has not been officially announced yet, but a new SpongeBob title has been rumoured multiple times. More Trending Plants Vs. Zombies Replanted is also 'likely' to be at the Direct, a remake of the 2009 hit which has also been rumoured by other sources and which Billbill-kun suggests will be released on October 23. Although, again, it's not been officially announced by publisher EA yet. Finally, he suggests that the Direct will probably feature Borderlands 4, which is out on October 3 – three weeks after the other versions. That seems an obvious guess even without inside knowledge but while Billbill-kun remains uncertain about the exact details of the Direct, the news about Octopath Traveler 0, SpongeBob, and Plants Vs. Zombies is almost certainly correct and means they're all due to be revealed at some point soon – whether it's today or not. 9 Rad Indie Games We Can't Wait To See More Of From The Mix Summer Showcase

The Mix Summer Showcase ran over 90 minutes and offered quick looks at dozens of upcoming games. Formerly known as Guerrilla Collective, the showcase is one of many indie events swirling around the orbit of Summer Game Fest, and unlike many of the bigger games getting shown off in the days ahead, some of these have playable demos right now while others are likely getting them in the weeks and months ahead. We picked out nine that caught our eye. Some of them were being shown for the first time. Others were previously revealed but had gone under our radar since, or popped up with fresh trailers showing a deeper look at story, world-building, and gameplay. But there were a ton more games worth checking out and wishlisting in the full showcase. You can see all of them for yourself in the video below. The most intriguing reveal was a tactical RPG from a small studio called Hypersect led by a former Destiny sandbox gameplay engineer, an Octopath Traveler monster artist, and the composer of Enter the Gungeon. Never's End's pitch? Final Fantasy Tactics collides with city management as you raise an army of possessed warriors to protect the last human settlement from a magical apocalypse. There's no release date yet but it's coming to PC and PlayStation. Airframe Ultra looks like Wipeout meets Twisted Metal. It's got a slick PS1 presentation and a gritty vibe that would fit right at home on a long-lost demo disc. It's the newest project from Rain World maker Videocult so it will probably be uncompromising in every way. Rig dice to beat evil billionaires at their own deranged games. That's the basic premise of Dead Finger Dice, a point-and-click roguelike about gambling with ghouls and trying to escape the yacht they've imprisoned you on. It's giving Inscryption meets Cryptmaster if they were made in MS-DOS. A survival horror spin on Balatro? Let's go. The gardenvania subgrene expands with Beauty Cult's Nectarmancer, a gorgeous-looking action platformer that doubles as a farming sim. Grow crops and fight in tight 2D spaces as you try to take down The Throne, a mysterious cabal exploiting the world's resources for its own gain. Here's the line from the Steam page that sold me: 'Use a network of plants and their latent nectarmancy to build up a planet-scale biological research computer to acquire even more nectar.' Yes. Yes I will. At first glance I thought Critterrupters was an Animal Crossing clone but it's actually more like Pokémon. Go from 3D exploration to 2D turn-based augmented reality battles with a focus on interrupting your opponent's attack to gain an advantage. There's over 100 Critter Chips to collect, train, and 'puzzle out' with the goal of defeating gym leaders and meeting the creator of the virtual Tamagotchi-based warriors. Motorslice is an atmospheric parkour adventure in which you wall-run and slash your way through a futuristic construction site with the vibe of Shadow of the Colossus inside a mega city. Think indie, PS2-era Mirror's Edge with a sword and heavy machinery boss fights. There's a bit of a Tarkovskian undertone. Prince of Persia is also an influence according to the developers. Should I just keep name-dropping cool stuff? A boomer shooter segment near the end of the showcase included a bunch of experimental first-person shooters, but Moros Protocol has been in production for five years and is the one that stuck out to me. The sci-fi roguelike combines Doom and Dark Souls for a low-poly fever dream that supports co-op. 'And yes, you can kick your enemies,' the devs write. Nocturne is a story-focused JRPG that uses rhythm gameplay for its combat. Rock Paper Shotgun likened it to 'Chrono Trigger meets Guitar Hero.' It might not end up an all-time classic like those, but the pixel art and soundtrack are pretty neat. What's it about? 'Your consciousness was uploaded to a world where a sentient AI has taken control, twisted creatures roam the land, and a vast corruption spreads.' An increasingly relatable predicament! Monsters are Coming! Rock & Road mixes and matches elements from lots of popular genres, including city builders and arcade-y bullet hell grindfests. The neat thing here is that the city you grow travels around and turns into a weapon itself, unleashing hell in Vampire Survivors-style horde mode onslaughts. There's a closed beta happening later this summer. For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Never's End is a retro tactical RPG with a fantastic pedigree

There's a new tactical RPG coming down the pike, and it's a doozy. Never's End has a retro look that's sure to please fans of iconic titles like Final Fantasy Tactics and boasts a fantastic pedigree. Masayoshi Nishimura, from Octopath Traveler , is on character design duties and the rapper/multi-instrumentalist Doseone made the soundtrack. He previously composed the music for Enter the Gungeon . To view this content, you'll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here and view the "Content and social-media partners" setting to do so. Indie developer Hypersect is making the game. It previously developed the creative puzzler Inversus , which ended up becoming a sleeper hit . The company hopes this will be something more than a clone of Tactics Ogre or the aforementioned Final Fantasy Tactics . Founder Ryan Juckett says that Never's End was also inspired by the freeform gameplay of stuff like Divinity: Original Sin 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild . To that end, the game features an open world and plenty of creative ways for players to tackle turn-based battles. The battle grids can be transformed via elemental magic. Players can drain rivers in the middle of a battle, for the purposes of navigation, or melt the ground to turn it into lava. Enemies can be frozen or set aflame. The company promises that "every battleground is unique, challenging you to find new ways to use magic and shift the odds in your favor." Customization seems to be the order of the day here. Players can "upgrade towns, temples and other locations to build businesses, establish trade routes, and recruit new companions." As the story progresses, these locations will attract a growing community of weaponsmiths, tavern keepers, tanneries, logging camps and more." Characters can also team up to unleash "tactical synergies." Check out the trailer. It looks pretty fun. Never's End comes out in late 2025. It'll be available for PlayStation consoles and PC via Steam. We don't have a price yet but it can already be wishlisted on Steam .
