How the first Monday in May has become New York's third fashion week
But first, the fashion. Overall, it appeared that guests got the assignment. Diana Ross, who defined the contemporary diva, rolled up in a white marabou-trimmed gown with a train 18 feet long and a coordinating hat. Paying homage to the movie "Mahogany," Zendaya followed Ms. Ross in a tailored-to-perfection white suit and wide-brimmed hat.
Gigi Hadid wore a gold Miu Miu dress inspired by a 1940s Harlem designer, Zelda Wynn Valdes, who made gowns in Washington Heights after working in her uncle's tailoring shop. Tyla wore a gown and makeup inspired by a Josephine Baker look.
Rihanna arrived with hubby A$AP in a demure light blue knit top and skirt that looked like she didn't really feel up to partying. But apparently, that was because she planned to do a Cinderella moment and transform for the ball on-site. She later appeared in a custom Marc Jacobs pinstripe Dandy gown with a cropped suit jacket, looking even more pregnant than when she arrived.
Madonna stole the scene in a white satin three-piece ensemble while brandishing a cigar as attendants fussed over her and she shushed the press pit. Doechii followed suit, but hers was a three-piece shorts suit by Louis Vuitton, and her cigar seemed bigger and bolder. Lizzo also took to brandishing a smoked accessory, dangling a cigarette in an ultra-long theater cigarette holder.
With a feather in her cap and walking stick, Teyana Taylor slayed in a red Marc Jacobs ensemble with a cape and rosettes. André 3000 carried a piano on his back 'cuz you never know when the mood may strike.
Cardi B was close to tripping up the stairs in green velvet if not for the handy team of PR professionals from KCD to catch her; another minty green style, also trendy, was on Serena Williams and custom-made in satin by Moncler. Lupita Nyong'o wore a mint green tailored Chanel suit with a chiffon cape and classic boater hat.
Straight from hosting "SNL," "Abbott Elementary" creator and star Quinta Brunson was wearing Sergio Hudson and excited to see lesser-known Black designers like Hudson, Harbison Studio, and Christopher John Rogers get props on such a large platform. In a custom look from anOnlyChild, Sarah Snook was giving English upper-class realness in her topcoat-inspired look.
Other stunners include Kendall Jenner 's gown by Maximilian Davis, which channeled a 1920s Harlem trend mixing African draping with tailoring. Alton Mason celebrated Dandy futurism, noting to The People Gallery that his favorite meal is lobster pasta. "Lupin" star Omar Sy, wearing Ozwald Boateng, told a French reporter in French that it seemed like a nice party but he wanted to taste the food first.
Lana Del Rey was missing the Dandy mark but looked gorgeous. She lived up to her old Hollywood moniker in Maison Valentino and was on the arm of Alessandro Michele. Nicole Kidman had zero side boob in her Balenciaga backless dress; Shakira, with three men carrying her pink Atelier Prabal Gurung gown with an 8-foot train, announced another Met appearance, her world tour, which will kick off at MetLife Stadium in a few days.
Anne Hathaway channeled more old-school UES fundraiser fit in a Carolina Herrera look that missed the Dandy mark. Bad Bunny, wearing a straw hat and leather satchel, was giving Huck Finn meets riverboat scoundrel. Luar designer edged himself and his date, the gorgeous Myha'la, a bit close to "Zoolander" territory rather than, say, Frederick Douglass or W.E.B. Du Bois.
The other Kardashian donned an alligator ensemble with a hat, giving it a Dandy mood by her designer du jour, Chrome Hearts — a brand she solely deems back to relevance. Similarly, Miley Cyrus wore a cropped crocodile jacket and skirt ensemble, but her look read even less Dandy.
Chappell Roan looked a bit out of place and salty in a pink sequin suit custom-made by "Wicked" costume designer Paul Tazewell with materials sourced from eBay. It channeled Elton John's Captain Fantastic more than Black Dandyism.
Janelle Monáe said she was feeling "Dandelion-ess" with a clock monocle, dressing as a time traveler with a cinematic approach to redefining what it means to wear a suit with superfine tailoring that is timeless. "It's about understanding and breaking the rules," she told the salivating press pool.
There was a bodysuit trend for women, some more favorable than others, made mainly by Vuitton. Blackpink singer and Thai actress Lisa stunned in her crystal-embellished jacket over a bodysuit and LV tights, while Pharrell Williams' wife, in a similar look, seemed downright uncomfortable. Sabrina Carpenter did it well in a burgundy style with military buttons. Doja Cat also donned a bodysuit look customized by Marc Jacobs, combining pinstripes and leopard.
After the weekend of festivities, it's a wonder whether anyone had any energy left. Scotch whiskey brand Johnnie Walker tapped Balmain 's Olivier Rousteing to co-create limited edition custom blends alongside the brand's first female master blender, Emma Walker (no relation). The Johnnie Walker Vault x Olivier Rousteing Couture Expression event involved a customized experience space dubbed the Johnnie Walker Vault in the former Sleep No More venue.
The room's focal point was an inverted prism that displayed a hologram show. While bespoke whiskey cocktails flowed freely, guests such as Lupita Nyong'o, Hunter Schafer, Stormzy, Regé-Jean Page, Nicky Hilton, and Darren Criss enjoyed a special tasting of the ultra-limited blend introduced by Rousteing and Walker. The French designer met Walker on a trip to Scotland and immediately connected creatively.
"I thought fashion was complex, but creating a most incredible and unique blend was even more complicated. It was like a symphony. Let's speak the same language; I do shoulder pads, and you do blends, so let's create together with the same instruments. It is not only a collaboration but also celebrating timelessness, quality, uniqueness, and couture," Rousteing told the crowd while thanking Walker. He encouraged everyone to dance to DJ Oscar Nñ of Papi Juice.
Meanwhile, that same night, Ferragamo hosted a traditional Italian dinner to celebrate Met Gala weekend and its creative director, Maximilian Davis.
Drawing upon its history of dressing Hollywood stars, the VIP crowd included Chris Rock, Ayo Edebiri, Tracee Ellis Ross, Solange Knowles, Jeff and Emilie Goldblum, LaKeith Stanfield, Paloma Elsesser, and Stefon Diggs.
Not to be outdone by another Italian downtown at Casa Cipriani in the Seaport, Remo Ruffini, Moncler, and Edward Enninful hosted a gathering to celebrate fashion and music at which Miley Cyrus gave guests such as Adut Akech, Colin Kaepernick, Stella Maxwell, Willow Smith, Ozwald Boateng, Helena Christensen, Joel Edgerton, Toni Garrn, Neelam Gill, Imaan Hammam, Anne Hathaway, Johannes Huebl, Heidi Klum, Daniel Lee, and Alton Mason a live debut of her new single "More to Lose" from her upcoming album "Something Beautiful."

New London comedy play takes on the battle to cast James Bond
A new play in London takes a comedic look at the high stakes casting of the new James Bond, bringing laughs to the biggest reveal in Hollywood. The main character, Deborah, is a fictionalised version of veteran Bond producer Barbara Broccoli, though as the play's star, Tanya Franks, points out, "We're absolutely not allowed to say that!" Deborah is about to unveil her perfect pick, a new 007 to reinvigorate the franchise, when her future star is hit by a career-ending scandal and the hashtags #DrNoConsent and #Moonraper start to trend. She and her co-producer cousin Malcolm (Philip Bretherton) and "mediocre nepo baby" son Quinn (Harry Goodson-Bevan) must scramble to find a replacement who will please both the focus groups and the financiers. But how does the white, philandering misogynistic killer of Ian Fleming's novels fit into today's world? Her son finds Theo (Obioma Ugoala), a Black actor who seems like a great fit for the world's most famous spy. But he is gay, and wants to bring his fiancé to events. Deborah must choose between the slick, suited formula the world knows, or another, more progressive version of the global icon. "The spectrum of casting has changed dramatically, fantastically so, and for the absolute right reasons. So I think this is a product where we can say, has it been left behind? And that's exactly the questions that we throw up," Franks told AP. "And certainly there are many social issues and issues within the casting environment that do certainly get debated in this to a certain extent, but in a very comic fashion." The last James Bond movie - and the final one for Daniel Craig - No Time to Die, was released in fall 2021, and the real-life producers of the franchise have not announced his replacement. "It becomes perhaps curiously this sort of referendum on British identity - you know, what is it to be British now, what is it to be a spy now, to want to serve your country. And I think that's the interesting thing," said Ugoala. "I think it could be anybody. And I think that I'd be really interested in perhaps like a South Asian actor as a Bond. I think it's more than sort of black and white. I think British identity is so much more than that," he added. 'A Role To Die For' written by Jordan Waller and directed by Olivier Award winner Derek Bond (no relation), runs at Marylebone Theatre in London until 30 August.

Swatch ad that sparked backlash puts focus on risky campaigns amid diversity rollbacks
American Eagle's ad featured Sydney Sweeney - an actor popular with Gen Z and known for her parts in hit shows including "The White Lotus" and "Euphoria" - who played on the similarity between the words "jeans" and "genes." The commercial was widely panned on social media for possibly raising issues of genetic traits in a racial context. US President Donald Trump even weighed in on the controversy, calling the commercial by Sweeney, a registered Republican, the "HOTTEST ad out there" and saying "Being WOKE is for losers." Dunkin followed with an ad featuring actor Gavin Casalegno promoting a new summer drink called Golden Hour. In the ad, Casalegno attributes his tan to genetics, saying "This tan? Genetics. I just got my colour analysis back. Guess what? Golden summer. Literally." Swatch, American Eagle Outfitters and Dunkin did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Businesses - especially those that make money from buzzy trends - are pushing the envelope as recent federal actions have shifted the legal and regulatory landscape surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. The notion of inclusivity had been a cornerstone of many companies' marketing since 2020, when the death of a Black man, George Floyd, at the hands of Minneapolis police, became a catalyst for the Black Lives Matter movement. Five years later, that idea has been de-emphasised. "Marketers are between a rock and a hard place. They know that the more inclusive they are, the less likely they are to get some social media buzz,' said Allen Adamson, co-founder of marketing consultancy Metaforce. They are taking more risks to try to break through to a younger, targeted audience, he said. Any gains from these ads, though, could be short-lived. They risk harming a brand's reputation in the longer run and may alienate a large consumer base of non-white shoppers, branding experts said. 'Whether it's the Black consumer, the Asian consumer, the Latin consumer, when American Eagle does an ad like that, they're excluding and they're leaving money on the table,' said Angeli Gianchandani, an adjunct professor at New York University and a brand strategist who has worked with the likes of Tiffany. Gianchandani said while non-Hispanic white Americans dominate US buying power, these other demographics are growing faster. L'Oréal faced criticism this month for partnering with a content creator on OnlyFans who posts lifestyle as well as adult content. The move went against the company's own stated guidelines for working with social media influencers that says these partners will not "engage in behaviours which could be interpreted as... pornography." Elf's ad that starred Matt Rife, a comedian who has made headlines for his joke about domestic violence, drew swift and sharp reaction online. It prompted an apology from the company whose trendy, inexpensive products are a hit with young shoppers. L'Oreal and Elf did not immediately respond to requests for comment. "That is not a blind spot; that is a brand knowingly stepping into controversy with someone who does not align with its values," said Gianchandani, calling the move an "unforced error." Unlike Elf, and also Swatch, which apologised quickly for their ads, American Eagle stood by its campaign. Ashley Schapiro, American Eagle's vice president of marketing, said on LinkedIn that on a Zoom call with Sweeney, company executives asked her, 'How far do you want to push it?' 'Without hesitation, she smirked and said, 'Let's push it. I'm game.' Our response? 'Challenge Accepted'."

Louis Vuitton unveils luxe make-up line in link with Pat McGrath
has announced the arrival of La Beauté, an 'elevated make-up line', as colour cosmetics continue to be seen as key growth avenues for ultra-luxury labels. And it comes as the company announces the official arrival of Dame Pat McGrath as creative director, Cosmetics, for La Beauté (although she's clearly been working on this project for some time). LVMH 's star brand said the launch expands the House's vision that's 'rooted in travel, creativity, and savoir-faire,' and introduces a 'highly curated offering of the finest quality make-up, housed in objets d'art designed to be kept forever'. It added that it's 'redefining beauty as a lifestyle, as an experience and as a dedicated art form,' and is setting 'a new standard in luxury beauty'. What this means in practice is 55 lipsticks (after all, LV is 55 in Roman numerals), 10 balms and eight eye palettes with 20 August set for the Chinese launch, then 25 August as a wider digital pre-launch date and a global debut later next week. The company said those lipsticks, balms, and eyeshadows (priced from $160 to $250) are 'objects of desire that echo the trunk-making, artistry, and cultural vision at the heart of Louis Vuitton, each with a McGrath twist. As with the Maison's most iconic pieces across fashion, accessories and fragrance, every detail has been considered, refined, and perfected'. And the packaging really underlines the luxury edge. Gilded packs by Konstantin Grcic are linked closely to the established codes of Louis Vuitton and in particular give a starring role to the LV flower. With the ongoing luxury fashion slowdown and the global luxury beauty market expected to continue a strong growth trajectory, it's an increasingly important category for even the most successful fashion labels. And the more luxurious the better as the pricing proves. But while the prices are high, the launch is likely to appeal to aspirational luxury shoppers who may not buy the clothes but may well have a Louis Vuitton bag and will be keen to have a lipstick to go in it.
