LSU baseball has one series left on the schedule before the SEC Tournament next week. The Tigers will get it started on Thursday night against South Carolina.
LSU has struggled on the road this year, but LSU is the heavy favorite in this one. South Carolina is 5-22 in SEC play, unranked and out of the postseason picture. It should be smooth sailing for Jay Johnson's squad, but the flip side is LSU's resume takes a hit if the Tigers don't sweep the Gamecocks.
While there's not much intrigue on the field, the story of the week is LSU facing former manager Paul Mainieri, who is in Year 1 with South Carolina. Mainieri won a great many games at LSU, including a national championship. He recruited several players on LSU's 2023 national championship team and stuck around the program after stepping down as the coach.
Mainieri remains respected in Baton Rouge, but he's in the wrong dugout this weekend.
LSU is making a minor adjustment to the rotation. Instead of pitching Game 1 on Thursday, ace Kade Anderson will take the ball on Friday. Anderson left his start vs. Arkansas with an injury scare, but Johnson was quick to ease concerns. LSU's Thursday starter is to be determined.

After surviving the Baton Rouge Regional, LSU baseball welcomed West Virginia for the Baton Rouge Super Regional. Needing two wins to punch a ticket to Omaha, LSU scored 16 runs to take down the Mountaineers in game one 16-9. Kade Anderson got the start for LSU in Game 1. After both teams worked a scoreless first inning, West Virginia got on the board in the top of the second after a single caromed off Anderson's arm on the mound. Kade would stay in the game and finish the inning as we headed to the bottom of the second with LSU trailing 1-0. Advertisement Both pitchers got in a rhythm, and the bats went quiet until the bottom of the fourth inning. After Luis Hernandez and Daniel Dickinson were hit by a pitch, Derek Curiel hit a three-run homer to give the Tigers their first lead of the ballgame at 3-1. In the bottom of the fifth inning, LSU broke the game wide open as the Tigers scored seven runs. Stephen Milam hit a grand slam, Curiel hit an RBI single, and Chris Stanfield hit a two-RBI single to increase the Tigers' lead to 10-1! When you give a pitcher like Anderson a 10-1 lead entering the sixth inning, you feel pretty good about your odds. If you have not been keeping up with this West Virginia team, you would not know that they went 3-0 in the Clemson Regional, but they had to come from behind to win all of those games. In the top of the sixth inning, West Virginia cut into the LSU lead as they plated four runs against Anderson to cut the lead to 10-5. Just like that, the Mountaineers were right back in the game. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Jared Jones led off the inning with a double, Milam walked, Hernandez reached on a fielder's choice, and Dickinson got hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Advertisement Curiel and Ashton Larson would walk to score two more runs to increase the lead to 12-5. Josh Pearson stepped into the batter's box and he would hit ANOTHER grand slam to make it 16-5 Tigers! In the top of the seventh inning, West Virginia hit a two-run homer with two outs to cut the lead to 16-7. Anderson's day was finished after seven innings of work. He gave up seven runs on nine hits, seven strikeouts, and two walks. The seven runs he gave up today were the most runs he has given up in a single game all season. DJ Primeaux entered to pitch for the Tigers. After getting one out, Primeaux was pulled from the game, and William Schmidt entered. Schmidt gave up a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to cut the lead to 16-9. Mavrick Rizy then entered to pitch. Rizy got the final three outs, and LSU won game one! The Tigers have won the College World Series seven times, the second-most of any program, and have made it to college baseball's preeminent event 19 times. As the Tigers get closer to a return to Omaha, here's a closer look at Johnson and his career: Jay Johnson career Johnson is in his fourth season at LSU, where he was hired in June 2021 to take over the recently retired (but since un-retired) Paul Mainieri. In his time at LSU, his teams have not only won — with two regional championships to their name — but have also featured and developed major-league talent, a group headlined by Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews, who went with the No. 1 and No. 2 picks, respectively, in the 2023 MLB Draft after leading the Tigers to the 2023 College World Series championship. During that 2023 season, Johnson was voted national coach of the year by D1 Baseball, the American Baseball Coaches Association and Collegiate Baseball. LSU's championship that season was its first since 2009. Over his nearly four full seasons with the Tigers, Johnson's teams have gone 184-77. With LSU's regional-winning 10-6 triumph against Little Rock on June 2, Johnson picked up his 500th career victory. Auburn star earns PGA Tour Card after sensational sophomore season Jackson Koivun is now in elite company. Although Auburn couldn't quite get over the hump to repeat as the National Champions this golf season, the Tigers best golfer, sophomore Jackson Koivun, ended his extraordinary season with a coveted piece of hardware. The two-time SEC Golfer of the Year finished in fourth place overall during the stroke play portion of the NCAA Championships, giving him more than enough points to surpass the 20 total needed to acquire a PGA Tour Card through the PGA Tour University Accelerated program. The program, which is designed to award juniors who accumulate 20 points through played events during their first three years of college golf, was finished by Koivun in just two seasons. Now with immediate eligibility to play PGA Tour events, the 20-year-old could choose to end his Tigers career after just two short years if he opts to become a professional. But Koivun, who has vocally pronounced his love for the Plains in the past, recently told Golfweek he would delay defer his card until 2026, again stating "he loves Auburn" before stating how he believes college golf "is in such a good spot right now and it's going to continually prepare [him] for the PGA Tour." Koivun is now the third collegiate golfer to earn his PGA Card through the accelerated program. Alabama native and former Vanderbilt star Gordon Sargent and former Florida State golfer Luke Clanton are the only other golfers to successfully finish the program.
