An international study from the University of Waterloo found that loneliness did not independently raise the risk of death once other health factors were considered. Indeed's 2024 Work Wellbeing Report shows companies with the highest employee well-being scores outperformed the S&P 500 by 11% from January 2021 to mid-2024 - and belonging ranked as the most important driver of well-being. If flossing helps prevent cavities, managing loneliness requires simple, consistent maintenance. Gilbert recommends practicing social hygiene: low-friction, repeatable behaviors that prioritize developing and nurturing connections: The key is repetition. Belonging is built through rhythm, not one-offs. Organizational Social Hygiene For companies, loneliness often shows up as disengagement - and it is costly. Gallup's 2025 State of the Workplace Report revealed that the economic impact of disengagement eclipsed $400 billion in 2024. Disengagement also typically signals a breakdown in trust: work feels disconnected from purpose, feedback goes unanswered and recognition is sporadic. The result? Disconnection that leads to lower employee retention and productivity. The model centers on consistency and accessibility: more than 60 recurring gatherings occur each month, all hosted by community members. From book clubs and glass-engraving workshops to quiet group reading, people return because the formats do too. Critical to the design is the understanding that members connect in different ways. 'Some people thrive in big group events,' Pascocello said in a Zoom interview. 'Others want a quiet corner. We let people self-select how they prefer to engage, whether that's with a name tag, a color, or a room where they can just be around others without pressure to talk.' Recurring experiences also lead to something else: accountability. When gatherings become routine, people depend on and look forward to seeing each other. When they do, trust builds, relationships form and real community happens. 'We're creating a type of reality that older adults want to live long for,' interim executive director Dr. Jennifer Wong shared in a Zoom interview. In fact, while most members are in their late 70s, several centenarians participate weekly. The model extends beyond enrichment. Many participants are referred by clinicians or partners such as Citymeals on Wheels. Through its Story RX initiative, the program is also prescribed by providers including Cleveland Clinic based on social isolation screenings. Yet dignified connection is not only an aging issue. Honoring lived experience may be one of the most underutilized tools for societal connection at every stage of life. Intentionally meeting people where they are, and getting creative about how strategic communication, space and recognition can drive better outcomes for individuals and organizations alike.
