Mann ki Baat: PM Modi calls women drone operators 'sky warriors', says they usher in new revolution in agriculture sector
Addressing the 122nd episode of Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi said, 'Today, there are many women who are working in the fields as well as touching the heights of the sky. Yes! You heard it right; now the women of the village are flying drones as Drone Didi and ushering in a new revolution in agriculture. In Sangareddy district of Telangana, women who had to depend on others till some time ago.'
'Today those very women are completing the work of spraying pesticides on 50 acres of land with the help of drones. Three hours in the morning, two hours in the evening and the work is done. Neither the scorching sun nor the danger of poisonous chemicals. The villagers have also accepted this change wholeheartedly. Now these women are not known as 'drone operators' but as 'sky warriors',' he added.
Notably, Namo Drone Didi is a central sector scheme aiming to empower women-led Self-Help Groups (SHGs) by equipping them with drone technology to provide agricultural services.
Through this scheme, the Government of India is taking a significant step towards advancing agricultural practices while empowering women in rural areas. This initiative aligns with the government's broader goals of promoting women-led development and infusing technology into traditional sectors like agriculture. The scheme promises to revolutionise farming practices, provide a sustainable income source for SHGs, and inspire a new generation of women entrepreneurs in rural India.
Prime Minister in his monthly radio programme, also praised the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) for climbing the 'world's most difficult' peak, Mount Makalu.
'Just imagine a person is climbing snowy mountains, where it is difficult to breathe and there is danger to life at every step, and still that person is engaged in cleaning there. Something similar has been done by members of our ITBP team. Our ITBP team went to climb the world's most difficult peak, Mount Makalu,' the Prime Minister stated.
He further said that the ITBP personnel who climbed Mount Makalu also took up the task of removing the garbage lying near the peak.
'But they didn't just climb the mountain; they also took up the task of removing the garbage lying near the peak! The members of this team brought down more than 150 kg of non-biodegradable waste with them,' he added.
The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) successfully scaled Mt Makalu (8,485 m), the world's fifth highest peak, on April 19, marking the first-ever ascent of the peak by any Central Armed Police Force (CAPF).
The summit was part of ITBP's historic International Mountaineering Expedition to Mt Makalu and Mt Annapurna (8,091 m), flagged off from ITBP Headquarters in New Delhi on March 21.
This dual-peak mission, a first in the force's history, showcased ITBP's enduring legacy in high-altitude operationsLed by Deputy Commandant Anoop Kumar Negi, with Deputy Commandant Nihas Suresh as deputy leader, the 12-member expedition team was split into two groups of six.
The Makalu group recorded an 83 per cent summit success rate, with five climbers reaching the peak around 08:15 hrs on April 19. The successful summiteers included Assistant Commandant Sanjay Kumar, Head Constable (HC) Sonam Stobdan, HC Pradeep Panwar, HC Bahadur Chand, and Constable Vimal Kumar.
Meanwhile, the Annapurna team battled extreme conditions, including blizzards and whiteouts, reaching an altitude of 7,940 meters--just 150 meters shy of the summit--before retreating safely at 14:45 hrs on the same day.
In line with its 'Clean Himalaya - Save Glacier' campaign, the expedition collected 150 kg of non-biodegradable waste from high-altitude camps, reinforcing ITBP's environmental commitment.
With the successful ascent of Mt Makalu, the ITBP has now scaled six of the world's 14 eight-thousanders, including Mt Everest, Mt Kanchenjunga, Mt Dhaulagiri, Mt Lhotse, and Mt Manaslu. The force has conquered a total of 229 peaks to date, underscoring its unmatched expertise and resilience in some of the harshest terrains on earth.(ANI)

In his Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the Sangh's volunteers who contributed to the nation over the years. This is the first time that the PM has acknowledged the role of the RSS in his Independence Day speech. 'Our clear belief is that this country is not built by governments alone; it is not built only by those who hold the reins of state power; it is not built solely by those who administer governance. This nation is built by the toil of crores of people — by sages, saints, scientists, teachers, farmers, soldiers, workers, labourers — everyone's efforts contribute to nation-building. Contributions come from individuals and from institutions alike,' he said. A former pracharak or a full time volunteer of the Sangh, the PM said it was with 'great pride' that he was mentioning one such institution, the RSS. 'One hundred years ago, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was founded. These 100 years of service to the nation constitute a proud and golden chapter. With the resolve of nation-building through character-building, with the aim of serving Maa Bharati, the swayamsevaks have, for a century, dedicated their lives to the welfare of the motherland,' he said, adding that 'service, dedication, organisation, and unmatched discipline' have been the RSS's hallmarks. 'In a sense, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is the world's largest NGO, with a century-long history of devotion,' Modi said. 'Today, from the ramparts of the Red Fort, I salute all the swayamsevaks who have contributed to this century-long journey of national service, and the nation takes pride in this grand and dedicated journey of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, which will continue to inspire us.' The PM's praise for the organisation was perceived by party leaders as a statement that scotches speculation of unease between the party and the political mentor. 'As PM, he has ensured that the ideology and belief system of the Sangh found resonance in policies… from the government's thrust on social welfare to the construction of the [Ayodhya] Ram Temple and now the setting up of a demographic mission are all inspired by the Sangh's ideology,' a senior party leader saic on the condition of anonymity. The Opposition, however, criticised PM Modi for making a reference to the Sangh in his public address. AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi described Modi's praise of RSS as an 'insult to the freedom struggle'. 'The RSS and its ideological allies served as British foot soldiers. They never joined the fight for independence and hated Gandhi more than they ever opposed the British,' Owaisi said in a post on X. 'The ideology of Hindutva believes in exclusion and is antithetical to the values of our Constitution. Modi could have gone to Nagpur to praise RSS as a swayamsevak, why did he have to do it from the Red Fort as the Prime Minister?'

Nagaland governor La Ganesan, 80, dies at Chennai hospital
KOHIMA: Nagaland governor La Ganesan died at a private hospital in Chennai on Friday, a Raj Bhavan official said. He was 80. Nagaland governor La. Ganesan passes away at the age of 80 on Friday. (ANI) Ganesan was undergoing treatment in the ICU unit for the past few days and died on Friday night, a Kohima Raj Bhavan spokesperson said. Ganesan was admitted to hospital after he suffered a fall at his Chennai house on August 8. Ganesan, who served as Manipur governor from 2021, was shifted to Nagaland Raj Bhavan in February 2023. He had previously served as a Rajya Sabha MP from Madhya Pradesh for a brief period. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio and deputy CM Yanthungo Patton expressed condolences over Ganesan's death. In a post on X, PM Modi said, 'Pained by the passing of Nagaland Governor Thiru La. Ganesan Ji. He will be remembered as a devout nationalist, who dedicated his life to service and nation-building. He worked hard to expand the BJP across Tamil Nadu. He was deeply passionate about Tamil culture too. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. Om Shanti.' In his message, Rio said he had come to know La Ganesan as a man of integrity, principle, great wisdom and moral strength. 'His modest nature endeared him to the people and will continue to inspire generations,' he said 'Throughout his journey in public life, he carried himself with dignity, humility, and an unshakeable commitment to the welfare of the people. Panel set up to curb infiltration, says PM
New Delhi: India's demography is being changed as a part of a well thought-out conspiracy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleged on Friday as he announced a high-powered demographic mission to tackle the 'massive crisis lurking over India'. The country's demography is being changed as a part of a well thought-out conspiracy. A new crisis is being created. And these intruders are snatching away employment opportunities for our youth... They are targeting our sisters and daughters. This will not be tolerated. These intruders are usurping the land of innocent tribals. This country will not tolerate such acts,' Modi said in his customary address to the nation on Independence Day. He added: 'When there is a demographic change, especially in the border states, it creates a crisis for national security. It creates a crisis for the country's unity, integrity and development and creates social tension. No country can give away its land to illegal immigrants. No country in the world can afford to do this. How can India allow this to happen?' Referring to the struggle for India's independence, Modi said: 'Our forefathers have sacrificed themselves to give us freedom and an independent India. It is our duty towards them that we do not tolerate such activities in our country. That will be the real tribute to them.' 'I want to say from the Red Fort, we have decided to start a high-powered demographic mission. With this mission we will tackle the massive crisis lurking over India,' he said, adding that the mission will work within a stipulated time and with a well thought-out strategy. The PM's comments come amid a major political tussle over the identification and deportation of undocumented Bangladeshis in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled states. The Opposition has attacked Modi over the 'harassment' of Bengali-speaking Muslims in the garb of this exercise. Undocumented immigration is a major issue in Assam and West Bengal, the two border states going to the polls next year. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched what he calls a drive to evict and send back Bangladeshis. In June, Sarma said 330 illegal Bangladeshis were sent back. In July, a political slugfest broke out between West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and her Assam counterpart Sarma on social media on July 19 with the two leaders accusing each other of engaging in divisive and appeasement politics Banerjee alleged that the BJP was persecuting Bengali speakers in Assam. 'This divisive agenda of the BJP in Assam has crossed all limits and people of Assam will fight back. I stand with every fearless citizen who is fighting for the dignity of their language and identity, and their democratic rights,' she posted on X on July 19. Soon after, Sarma hit back stating: 'Didi (Mamata Banerjee), let me remind you—In Assam, we are not fighting our own people. We are fearlessly resisting the ongoing, unchecked Muslim infiltration from across the border, which has already caused an alarming demographic shift. In several districts, Hindus are now on the verge of becoming a minority in their own land,' he wrote on X.
