Veeam launches SaaS backup for Microsoft Entra ID in Data Cloud

Techday NZ24-04-2025
Veeam Software has introduced a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) backup solution for Microsoft Entra ID designed to strengthen data protection for organisations using the identity management platform.
Microsoft Entra ID, previously known as Azure AD, is currently subject to more than 600 million attacks daily, highlighting the importance of digital identity security. The new Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft Entra ID aims to simplify data resilience measures for Entra ID tenants and ensure continued access to critical identity and access management assets.
This update represents the latest expansion of Veeam Data Cloud, combining cloud-native technologies and artificial intelligence acceleration to manage and secure data both on-premises and in cloud environments. Veeam states this approach is aimed at improving business continuity and operational efficiency while addressing the complexities of identity management backup.
Niraj Tolia, Chief Technology Officer at Veeam, commented: "Security starts with managing your users and ensuring the right people have access to the right systems. That's why protecting Entra ID is so important, and why it's the latest addition to our Veeam Data Cloud platform. We are giving customers greater simplicity with an enterprise-ready, pre-hardened, and self-configured SaaS solution that removes the burden of managing and maintaining complex backup infrastructure."
The SaaS offering is designed not only as a defence against cybercrime but also to support compliance requirements, overcome recycle bin limitations, reduce the impact of accidental deletions and address policy misconfigurations. The backup and restoration capabilities extend to Entra ID users, groups, application registrations, logs and related metadata, bringing together these functions in an all-in-one cloud-based service with unlimited storage and a consolidated user interface.
Among the primary features detailed by Veeam are enhanced visibility and control over changes within Entra ID to reinforce business continuity, security and regulatory compliance; quick recovery of users, groups, attributes and other objects; and a managed backup service that includes maintenance, updates and security patches overseen by expert teams.
Krista Case, Research Director at The Futurum Group, said: "Protecting Microsoft Entra ID has never been more important. In fact, one in five respondents in Futurum's Cybersecurity Decision Maker IQ research indicated credential compromise/account takeover as a security incident most impacting their organisation. Veeam is making resiliency for these environments, including visibility into potentially malicious behaviour and automated backup jobs, accessible to a broader range of customers by delivering it in a managed and hosted model with the addition of Entra ID protection to Veeam Data Cloud."
Current Veeam Data Cloud customers already using Microsoft 365 protection can now bundle Entra ID coverage with their existing Microsoft 365 Flex and Premium packages, continuing Veeam's pay-per-user approach. This enables businesses to consolidate identity management backup alongside productivity workload protection under a single subscription structure.
The unified interface of the Veeam Data Cloud platform allows customers to manage all of their protected workloads together, extending platform features such as advanced security controls, role-based access, streamlined reporting, and operational simplicity to Entra ID users. Maintenance and updates are managed by Veeam, further reducing the overhead for internal IT teams.

Semperis launches tool to secure AD service accounts

Semperis has introduced a new edition of its Directory Services Protector (DSP), known as Service Account Protection Essential, aimed at improving the security management of Active Directory and Entra ID service accounts. Service accounts, which are non-human identities used by applications to interact with directory services, frequently pose security challenges due to unmanaged proliferation and a tendency to accrue excessive privileges over time. These characteristics make them susceptible to exploitation by cyber attackers. Service Account Protection Essential is designed to provide organisations with an inventory of these accounts and facilitate ongoing monitoring for vulnerabilities based on intelligence from the Semperis research team. The tool can also discover previously unknown or misplaced service accounts, as well as detect stale and misconfigured ones. In addition, it identifies risky configurations, highlights critical exposures, and issues real-time alerts in response to malicious or anomalous activity. Security concerns "Service accounts are pernicious and nearly ungovernable by nature, so organisations struggle to adequately address them in security planning. Think about how many applications are onboarded and retired over the course of an Active Directory's lifespan. Each one of these applications may have several service accounts that connect them to AD. Those service account permissions are a black box, with passwords that are static or stale, but no one dares delete them. They're an obvious target for attackers because of their ungovernable state," said Ran Harel, Semperis AVP of Security Products. The focus on service accounts comes in the wake of high-profile supply chain attacks. Alex Weinert, Semperis Chief Product Officer, drew attention to previous incidents involving compromised service accounts to illustrate their ongoing risk to organisations. "Service accounts are very attractive to attackers. These accounts tend to proliferate in legacy AD applications and acquire excessive privileges over time, making them an obvious target for malicious actors, especially when service accounts are included in privileged cloud roles or groups tied to Microsoft 365. Service Account Protection Essential gives organisations unprecedented visibility into their service account security posture by helping them identify service accounts, create an inventory, and continuously monitor them to reduce the overall attack surface of the hybrid AD environment," said Weinert, former Microsoft VP of Identity Security. Features and dashboard improvements The updated DSP platform offers new capabilities designed to streamline work for security teams managing Active Directory and Entra ID object lists. Security practitioners can now categorise AD and Entra ID objects - including both privileged and service accounts - directly within the tool. This categorisation supports administrative tasks, enables swift policy changes, and helps automate responses to malicious modifications by reverting unauthorised changes as soon as they are detected. The DSP dashboard itself has been enhanced to provide a detailed summary of recent changes within Active Directory, comprehensive records of attack detection events, overall system health indicators, and a risk scoring mechanism. This information is intended to facilitate quick responses to identity threats and help organisations convey the status of their identity security posture internally. With the launch of Service Account Protection Essential, Semperis expands its capabilities for protecting hybrid and multi-cloud identity environments, which now include Active Directory, Entra ID, and other platforms. The new edition is positioned as a way for businesses to address pressing risks associated with unmanaged service accounts and reduce their exposure to identity-based attacks. Quest Software boosts Australian channel strategy with new leaders

Quest Software has announced new leadership appointments to strengthen its channel partner strategy across Australia, signalling an increased commitment to the country's enterprise sector and its partner ecosystem. Maureen Perrelli has been appointed as Chief Channel Officer to lead Quest Software's global channel strategy. Perrelli's previous roles include Vice President of Worldwide Channel Sales at NCR and Chief Revenue Officer at Brivo, alongside her experience at Oracle, GE and Secureworks. Within the Asia Pacific and Japan region, Angela Maniscalco steps into the Head of Channel post after five years leading erwin sales across APJ and ANZ, including during and after its integration into Quest. Maniscalco's earlier experience includes serving as Head of Strategic Partnerships and Marketing APAC at Insight. Channel focus These appointments are positioned as part of a targeted effort to grow Quest's local presence by delivering enhanced partner programs, increased enablement, and new opportunities for enterprise collaboration. Quest sees the Australian partner ecosystem as a central component in driving growth, particularly in sectors faced with high regulatory requirements. "Australian partners are at the heart of Quest's growth strategy as we expand our cybersecurity, data, and modernisation portfolios. Our goal is to build deeper and more strategic partnerships that deliver strong customer outcomes, especially in complex, highly regulated sectors such as finance, government and healthcare," said Maureen Perrelli, Chief Channel Officer at Quest Software. The company has outlined plans to expand and improve its partner program. Central to this refreshed approach are enhanced enablement resources, new certification pathways, and a suite of benefits across Quest's solution areas. Three solution pillars Quest Software is grouping its offerings into three primary areas. The first is Cybersecurity & IT Resilience, which includes tools for Active Directory protection, threat detection and recovery. Among the upcoming products, the GenAI-enhanced Security Guardian is scheduled to launch later in 2025, promising to enhance detection and response capabilities for environments using Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID. Quest expects these solution pillars to be strengthened by the new leadership structure and targeted partner program enhancements. Deeper partner engagement The company is also investing in joint go-to-market initiatives and field engagement, aiming to equip its Australian partners to address customer challenges more effectively and grow their own businesses. "Our strategy is simple: put customer outcomes first by working closely with trusted partners. It's not just about building great products, it's about how we take them to market together and create real value for customers," Perrelli added. Quest Software states its ongoing commitment is to deliver technology and solutions that support enterprise needs around data management, cybersecurity and platform modernisation. The company's larger client base includes over 45,000 organisations worldwide, among them more than 90% of the Fortune 500.
