World ORS Day 2025: How To Stay Safely Hydrated While Recovering From Fever

Imagine that you are running a marathon and reaching the finish line out of breath and covered in sweat, what does your body need the most in that moment? This World ORS Day, Dr Usha Chennuru, Medical Head, Cipla Health Ltd., shares why it is important to consume WHO-approved ORS formulation, which is the only scientifically proven solution to effectively reverse and correct dehydration almost instantly.
1. Fever- Fluid Loss

Yamuna water quality improved sharply in July: Environment Minister Sirsa

New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Saturday said the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has reported a significant improvement in the water quality of the Yamuna river in July, with key pollution indicators showing marked progress compared to June. Sirsa attributed the changes to sustained government efforts under the Yamuna cleaning program. 'These improvements are not incidental or seasonal. They are the result of deliberate and sustained human effort," he said. The minister said that Rs 500 crore allocated for Yamuna cleaning is being used for upgrading sewage treatment plants, intercepting drains and preventing untreated discharges from entering the river. The DPCC collected water samples from eight monitoring locations, including Palla, Wazirabad, ISBT Bridge, ITO Bridge, Nizamuddin Bridge and Okhla Barrage, the government said in a statement. 'According to the report, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) — a key measure of organic pollution — dropped sharply. At ITO Bridge, BOD levels fell from 70 mg/l in June to 20 mg/l in July. At Okhla Barrage, it declined from 46 mg/l to 8 mg/l," it added. Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), another critical pollution indicator, also showed improvement. COD at ITO Bridge reduced from 186 mg/l to 54 mg/l and from 100 mg/l to 30 mg/l at Okhla Barrage, the government said. Dissolved Oxygen (DO) levels, which were near zero in parts of the river in June, increased significantly at locations like Palla and Wazirabad, suggesting better oxygenation. 'We are not celebrating yet, but these results show our approach is working. The transformation of Delhi's environment is underway," the minister said. Sirsa also linked the progress on water quality to broader environmental gains under the Environment Action Plan 2025. Delhi recorded 29 out of 31 days in July with 'good' or 'satisfactory' air quality, making it the cleanest July on record. Public health campaign by Jipmer to reduce incidence of childhood diarrhoeal illnesses

A coordinated health campaign led by Jipmer was carried out to reduce the morbidity burden related to acute diarrhoeal disorders that remain a major public health challenge even though the Union Territory has not reported a diarrhoea-related death in the last five years. As part of this, Jipmer recently concluded a two-month, diverse-event 'Stop Diarrhoea' campaign that was designed as a comprehensive public health initiative aimed at empowering communities with knowledge and practices for preventing and managing diarrhoeal illnesses, particularly among children under five. During the culmination of the campaign, Ananthalakshmi, Deputy Director (Health and Family Welfare) and State Nodal Officer, pointed out that the Union Territory, which had an estimated 1,16,368 children aged less than 5 years, had not reported diarrhoeal deaths in the last five years. This, she said, was a testament to the ongoing public health efforts, a press note from Jipmer said. On the occasion, L.N. Dorairajan, Medical Superintendent, stressed the importance of diarrhoea prevention in India's goal of attaining the under-5 mortality rate. Gunasekaran Dhandapany, Head of the Department of Paediatrics, Jipmer, pointed out that despite significant advancements in healthcare, India continued to face a substantial challenge with diarrhoeal illnesses, particularly among children. A recent national survey had raised a red flag with findings indicating that an estimated 140 million children below the age of five (7.2%) experienced diarrhoea in the span of a fortnight prior to the survey, with many of these cases being preventable through basic hygiene. The Jipmer campaign followed the Health Ministry issuing instructions for all government health facilities to conduct extensive Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities. A team, guided by Jipmer Director Vir Singh Negi, devised the campaign that was led by Ramya Srinivasarangan, Nodal Officer and supported by Santhi Tamilmani, Officer-in-charge, Nursing department. The preparatory phase in June focused on establishing a robust framework for public engagement. Measures, included prominently displaying a trilingual banner at the entrance of the Women and Child Health (WCH) building in JIPMER, setting up Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) corners and putting up posters at strategic locations, such as patient care areas, including paediatric wards, general OPD, speciality OPDs, NICU, PICU, Casualty, immunisation clinics, postnatal wards, and obstetrics OPD. In its second phase, the campaign emphasised public outreach and delivery of health education communication in simple local language. The key messages, included essential hygiene practices — when and how to effectively wash hands, and identifying safe food and water sources to prevent diarrhoea. First aid measures were advocated, with demonstrations of reduced osmolarity WHO ORS preparation, guidance on its proper administration, the significance of zinc supplementation for children with diarrhoea, and the benefits of home-available fluids, Jipmer said. Outreach teams also stressed the importance of avoiding open-air defecation and seeking prompt medical care for children at the nearest health facility. Interactive sessions allowed the public to ask questions. The campaign also sought to boost public engagement with events, such as a Rangoli competition, role plays on diarrhoea prevention enacted by senior nursing officers, MSc nursing students, and interns at the Jipmer Rural Health Centre (RHC). A quiz competition on the theme of 'Diarrhoea prevention and management' was conducted for Senior Nursing Officers. The Jipmer Urban Health Centre at Kurusukuppam and Jipmer Rural Health Centre, Ramanathpuram, were sites of focused outreach programmes on immunisation days, where parents and caretakers received education regarding diarrhoea prevention and management. School visits saw over 500 school students educated about diarrhoea etiology, prevention, danger signs, and management.

Last Updated: The BMRCL said the liver was securely transferred from on a metro train from the Whitefield station to the Rajarajeshwarinagar station in time for a critical transplant. Bengaluru's Namma Metro on Friday facilitated the transportation of a donated human liver for transplant for the first time since its inception, according to Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). The BMRCL said the liver was securely transferred via ambulance from Vydehi Hospital to Whitefield Metro Station on August 1, at about 8:38 pm, accompanied by a doctor and seven medical staff. Upon arrival, the team was received by an Assistant Security Officer (ASO) and Metro personnel, who coordinated the documentation and necessary security checks. After that, the liver was transported on a train that departed Whitefield Metro Station at 8:42 pm and arrived at Rajarajeshwarinagar Metro Station at 9:48 pm, said the BMRCL. Another security officer and metro staff received the medical team at Rajarajeshwarinagar Metro Station and ensured a seamless transfer to a waiting ambulance, after which the organ was safely delivered to Sparsh Hospital in time for a critical transplant, as the corporation. The operation followed the guidelines of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and Joint Procedure Order (JPO) of the BMRCL. This was the second time in the country that a metro train was used for organ transportation. The achievement has highlighted the Namma Metro's contribution to the transport system and emergency medical services in Bengaluru, earning widespread praise on social media. On January 18, Hyderabad Metro Rail created a dedicated 'green channel", between Kamineni Hospitals in LB Nagar and Gleneagles Global Hospital in Lakdikapul, to facilitate the swift transportation of a donor heart.
