Khareef's call draws bikers back to Salalah

Muscat Daily2 days ago
Salalah – Khareef season in southern Oman is attracting a diverse mix of visitors, including a growing number of bikers from across the region. Among them is Trails and Dust, a Dubai-based biking group, which this week completed its annual tour to Salalah.
Formed five years ago, Trails and Dust has built a reputation for bringing together motorcycling enthusiasts from different backgrounds. The group not only rides together every weekend, but also rents bikes, equipment, and tools, and organises guided rides for riders of all skill levels.
'This ride is not just about adventure. It's about friendship, brotherhood and the joy of coming together, no matter from where you are or to what culture you belong. On the road, we're all one family,' said George Osorio, the group's leader.
The Salalah trip is the highlight of the year for the group, planned to coincide with khareef when cooler weather, lush landscapes and winding mountain roads make the journey both scenic and rewarding. Osorio said preparations begin weeks in advance, with bikes serviced and safety gear checked to ensure a smooth ride.
The road to Salalah brings its own challenges – long hours of riding, unpredictable weather and occasional mechanical problems – but the group sees these as part of the experience.
'It is always a pleasure to have bikers from around the world of different nationalities join us,' Osorio said.
Trails and Dust has also grown its network through an online registration platform, attracting newcomers who want to experience the camaraderie and freedom of the open road.
The group's next big event will be on August 15 and 16, with 15 members confirmed to take part in what is expected to be their largest single ride of the season. Osorio called it 'a fitting celebration of our shared passion, marking another milestone in our journey'.

Your khareef visit is not complete without stopping by the emerald valleys of Al San

Photos by Khalil Al Harmali A tranquil mountain village in Dhofar offers a pristine escape from urban life, embodying untouched natural beauty and sensory richness. Al San, situated approximately thirty kilometres from Salalah within the Al Qarra mountain range, remains largely untouched by commercial development, providing visitors with an authentic experience of the region's wilderness. Perched atop the mountains, Al San overlooks expansive plains that emerge in lush green hues during the monsoon season, with soft mists drifting across the peaks each morning. The journey into the village awakens the senses: crisp, pure air fills the lungs, while scents of wild trees, frankincense, and dew blend with the gentle sound of water cascading over rocks. During the Khareef, the southern monsoon period, Al San transforms into a fairy-tale landscape, with daily drizzle turning the terrain into a vibrant carpet of wildflowers. Shrouded in clouds that sometimes reveal their contours with dramatic revealings, the hills contribute to the region's surreal, dreamlike atmosphere. Natural springs such as Ayn Razat and Ayn Wadi Al Sheik are among the village's prominent features. The latter, which rarely overflows, offers spectacular waterfalls when it does. Nearby caves, including the well-known Shaghareeti Cave, provide quiet retreats for explorers and meditation alike, nestled within the mountain's protective embrace. What distinguishes Al San is its sense of seclusion and purity. Unspoiled by large-scale tourism or modernity, it remains a sanctuary where visitors can walk through silent valleys, follow drifting clouds, or lie beneath trees as fog gently rolls in. The silence and serenity of the landscape offer a rare, profound connection with nature. Reaching Al San requires no lengthy planning; the accessible, well-maintained road from Salalah takes less than thirty minutes, making it ideal for a day trip or a peaceful morning escape. While basic facilities are limited, the natural allure—its untouched landscape and unspoiled atmosphere—more than compensates. In Al San, visitors do not merely observe; they participate in a sensory journey. It remains one of Dhofar's most exquisite natural treasures, its secrets waiting to be fully uncovered and quietly celebrated—an enduring reminder of Oman's pristine wilderness. An amazing stopover during khareef One of the main reasons Al San is highly recommended is its lush greenery, a stark contrast to the arid landscape typical of Oman. The region receives substantial monsoon rains, which nurture the dense forests and vibrant flora that thrive there. This seasonal transformation creates a captivating landscape of green hills, waterfalls, and flowing streams, offering a serene environment for exploration and relaxation. Nature enthusiasts find delight in trekking through the verdant trails, discovering waterfalls, and experiencing the cool, misty air that characterises the region. Additionally, Al San boasts rich biodiversity, making it an ideal location for those interested in wildlife and plant species. The area is home to various native flora and fauna, offering opportunities for bird watching and nature photography. The scenic waterfalls and rivers support a healthy ecosystem, providing a habitat for numerous species and adding to the region's ecological appeal. Furthermore, the cool climate during Khareef provides a welcome respite from the heat prevalent elsewhere in Oman, making outdoor activities more enjoyable. The tranquil atmosphere, combined with the area's natural beauty, fosters a deep connection with nature, making it a must-visit destination for eco-tourists and outdoor adventurers alike.

Salalah Airport sees strong growth during Khareef season

SALALAH: Salalah Airport recorded a marked increase in both aircraft movements and passenger numbers during the 2025 Khareef season, from June 21 to August 3, compared with the same period last year. Figures from Oman Airports show total aircraft movements rose by 16 per cent to 1,849 flights, up from 1,592 in 2024, while passenger numbers grew by 5 per cent to 288,110, compared with 274,030 last year. Arrivals registered a 16 per cent rise in flights, increasing from 795 in 2024 to 925 in 2025, with arriving passenger numbers climbing 3 per cent to 158,301. Departures mirrored this growth, with flights up 16 per cent from 797 to 924, and departing passengers rising 8 per cent to 129,809. To improve passenger experience, Oman Airports implemented new technologies, expanded lounge capacity, and enhanced hospitality and retail services. Its 'Travel Easier' initiative allowed passengers to check in directly from their cars, reducing waiting times and improving convenience. The surge in traffic reflects growing tourist interest in Dhofar Governorate's Khareef season, renowned for its cool climate, seasonal rains, and rich mix of cultural, heritage, and recreational attractions. With ongoing events and rising visitor numbers, tourism activity in the governorate is expected to remain strong in the coming weeks. — ONA
