Rupee logs worst losing streak in 6 months on US tariff woes; RBI caps damage

Mint9 hours ago
MUMBAI - The Indian rupee ended lower for a fifth straight week, its biggest consecutive weekly drop in six months, as trade tensions between India and the United States escalated following President Donald Trump's call for new tariffs on Indian goods.
The rupee closed marginally higher at 87.6550 against the U.S. dollar, from 87.7025 on Thursday.
The currency opened at 87.5600 and reached an intraday high of 87.5350, supported by unwinding of long dollar positions in the NDF market.
Dollar bids, primarily from oil importers, pushed the USD/INR higher after initial lows, traders said.
For the week, the rupee eased 0.1%, following a 1.2% drop last week, and has depreciated nearly 3% over the past five weeks.
Rising pressure on the rupee was driven by India's position among the hardest-hit countries in Trump's trade offensive, including a new 25% tariff on Indian goods.
The move places India alongside Brazil, facing the steepest import duties, unsettling markets concerned about the impact on capital flows and investor sentiment towards Indian assets.
Fears of a record low in the currency prompted the Reserve Bank of India to intervene almost daily, preventing a deeper slide, traders said.
The RBI resumed intervention in the NDF market to manage rupee volatility, four bankers told Reuters.
Market participants expect another drop in foreign exchange reserves that saw a decline of more than $9 billion in week ended August 1, indicating intervention in the spot market.
Meanwhile, some remain hopeful that a resolution would be achieved in coming period.
Looking at the recent history, there is a high probability that the U.S. lowers tariffs in coming weeks or months and this could lead to a relief rally in Indian markets, as and when it happens, said Nishit Master, portfolio manager at Axis Securities PMS.

Tariff trauma: Sensex is back below 80k mark after 3 months

MUMBAI: A day after Dalal Street investors ignored the significantly higher US tariffs, the sensex slumped nearly 1% or 765 points on Friday to a three-month closing low of 79,858. It closed below the 80,000 mark for the first time since May 9 on fears of the tariffs hitting Indian companies and the economy, and due to consistent foreign fund selling. Nifty lost 233 points or 1% to close at 24,363 points on Friday. Selling in the domestic market intensified further on Friday as analysts and investors believe that once the stiff tariff penalty on Indian goods by the US comes into effect, India's growth could be hit, Prashanth Tapse of Mehta Equities said. "While inflation is likely to go up next year, the likely impact on growth due to increased tariff penalty by US govt would hit investors' sentiment badly and fuel fund outflows further. " Among the sensex stocks, Bharti Airtel was the top laggard with a 3.4% loss. Market players said a block deal had an impact on the stock price. Other top index losers were Tata Motors (-2.2%) and Kotak Bank (-2.1%). The day's selling left investors poorer by Rs 4.7 lakh crore with BSE's market cap at Rs 440.6 lakh crore. Gold Hits New High Gold futures in the US hit a record high on Friday amid uncertainty over whether country-specific US import tariffs would apply to the most commonly traded sizes of gold bars, Reuters reported. Dec US gold futures rose over 1% on Friday to hit a record $3,534 per ounce, when the Financial Times first reported the news. India won't bow down to anybody, says Piyush Goyal

NEW DELHI: Asserting that "India will not bow down to anybody", commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said on Friday that countries will restructure their trade routes and partners. "The world keeps evolving, international trade keeps finding new pathways. What we are seeing today is possibly a churn that is bound to happen every few years - new countries come up, some go down. This is India's time," he said at a Business Today event. The minister said India's exports during the current fiscal year will be higher than last year. In 2024-25, India's exports reached a record $825 billion, with goods shipments valued at over $437 billion, around the same level as the previous year. Asked about the impact of Trump tariffs, he retorted by saying that India finds opportunities in crisis. "The nation's morale is high... There is a lot of strength in the Indian economy... India will emerge as the winner," he said. Trump's tariffs have induced uncertainty, especially with Indian exports to the US going to attract 50% duty from Aug 27. The minister was, however, confident of the Indian economy doing well and hit out at the American president's comments of India being a "dead economy. "Samajhne wale samajh gaye, jo na samjhe who anari hain (those who are wise have understood, but the naive haven't). It's so sad, the whole world is looking up to India, whole world recognises us as the fastest growing large economy... Today, the world recognises the strength of India, recognises our demographic advantage, recognises what 1.4 billion aspirational Indians bring to the table as demand. India is a huge market: Why do you think India is queuing up to trade or have better market access?" he said.
